Sunshine today!  But very cold for us!
Went overboard on the gingerbread cupcakes yesterday even though they didn't come out as well as I'd hoped - heavy but with a nice flavour. Also went overboard on the spicy dark chocolate on a couple of days. Didn't get a workout in yesterday. So I'm lightening up on the calories for a few days.
I'm wondering if it's a good idea to lose a pound or two before we start these upcoming holidays - as a credit - like I did before xmas? Or is it better to just deal with any possible gain after we return?
Ok, got out the trousers I intend to wear to Morocco (lightweight, lots of secure pockets) and although they aren't tight there is no extra room in them at all.  And I get bloated a LOT (probably from too much fluid intake and swallowing too much air when I eat?). The scale hasn't changed more than tenths of a pound (always says 131.something) but I feel like some weight has shifted to my waist and hips.

We're spending two days with friends just before we leave for Morocco, and I'm expecting to be offered lots of non-weight-conscious food and drink but I'll try to at least keep the portions small.  Other than walking to the pub and maybe a walk on some trail through the woods, no other exercise.

So I'm going to keep the calories down until then and keep the workouts to 6 days a week.

  • 45 mins tae bo/jump rope
  • 5 sets of 6 routines w/weights
  • 4 sets of lower body toning
  • 4 sets of abs
  • B:  porridge/raisins/almonds, skimmed milk, tea
  • L:  liver pate on 1 slice toast, pbj on 1 slice toast, yogurt
  • S:  clementine, grapes
  • D:  veggie chili & rice, salad w/walnuts, drink
  • S:  hot chocolate, 2 gingerbread cupcakes (they are very small!)
  • Teas and water
TOTAL:  1562

Progress as of today: 35 lbs lost so far, only 0 lbs to go!

OOO hmm....I think its whatever you'd like! For me? I usually deal with the weight afterwards lol

sweetpea1977 on 02/03/2012:
Oooh, interesting question! I am very lenient with food choices while on vacation, since I rarely have the opportunity to go on vacation. So, if it were me in your exact position, I'd probably step it up a notch to rev my metabolism up as much as I can and lose a few pounds so I can enjoy my favorite foods with less guilt. :)

V on 02/03/2012:
Well I guess that all depends on how you feel Annie..Are you planning to get some workouts in on vacay? I am sure you will be getting alot of walking and swimming in, right? How healthy is the cuisine in Morocco and how much indulging do you plan? I say do what you feel to make your vacay stress and guilt free...Have a good one <3

selina on 02/03/2012:
Sounds like you have a great plan in preparation for Morocco. Good job!

Thank you much for the link you sent - I remember looking it up a couple of years ago. Looks fantastic for a recovering catholic!

Umpqua on 02/03/2012:
I agree with the other ladies, do whatever feels best for you. I do think if you end up gaining a few pounds on the vacation that once you return to your usual lifestyle you will lose them quickly. I'm glad you're enjoying those cupcakes despite their weirdness ;)

thenewMLE on 02/03/2012:
Have a great time on your trips and I'm sure when you return to your regular INTENSE schedule of exercise, you will be just fine!! Have fun. Thanks for the heads up on the almonds. I am actually using them to boost my calories since I have been hitting under 1200. By a handful, I have about 10 -12 almonds which should be about 10- 15 grams. I am still trying to get comfortable with grams because we measure in cups and ounces and it is about 1/4 cup for a snack. Have a great weekend!!

sweetpea1977 on 02/03/2012:
Sounds like a good plan to me!

Love the plan Annie, it would be nice to have a little 'room' in those trousers before the eating begins! LOL I bet you look great:)

The best laid plans of mice and men........
Yesterday was housework day. I got the living room cleaned and tidied, the laundry room, and swept the kitchen floor so I could wash it.  Planned on cleaning bathrooms after lunch.  Break time.  Lunch.  And then while eating lunch (not mindful, I know) ...

...saw on Facebook that Thich Nhat Hanh (my fave Buddhist monk) is going to be in London the end of March. Mentioned it to hub and he said he had just found out that his favourite concert (St. Matthew's Passion) is the 1st of April in London.  Hmm.. so I spent the rest of the afternoon researching a trip to London.  So we've booked the hotel for 4 nights, the train (1st class!!), the tickets to hear Thich speak, the concert.  There's also a massive group meditation with Thich in Trafalgar Square while we are there.  !!!

Plans for today are thrown out of whack as well.  Drove hubby to bus stop this morning and then did grocery shopping.  Found wholemeal pastry flour at the health food store!   Making unsweetened applesauce because you can't buy it here. So....Gingerbread cupcakes today.

So sometime today I'll work out, I think!

Workout:  ???

  • B:  porridge/raisins/almonds, skimmed milk, tea
  • S:  it is 0C/32F outside. Not used to that here!   So when I got home had tea with milk and one of those yummy Sesame Snaps that jumped onto the counter at the health food shop.
  • L:  finally getting my cheeseburger!  Cheeseburger made with lean ground steak, low fat cheddar, mayo, tomato slices, 2 slices wholegrain bread, packet of baked crisps, yogurt  Mmmmm
  • S:  2 clementines
  • D:  veggie curry & basmati rice, salad, drink
  • S:  1/2 litre diet coke (yea, I know, but I rarely drink it), gingerbread cupcake
  • Teas and water

TOTAL:  1757

Progress as of today: 35 lbs lost so far, only 0 lbs to go!

sweetpea1977 on 02/02/2012:
Wow, a trip to London too. How awesome!! Take pictures please! :)

Yay, its cheeseburger day!! :)

selina on 02/02/2012:
I'm so envious of your going to see Thich Nhat Hanh, enjoy! Looking forward to hearing from you more about the mass meditation in Trafalgar Square when the time comes. Maybe we'll see you in the papers, ha! Have a happy and mindful day!

V on 02/02/2012:
Enjoy you burger :P I want to hear all about your visit to London! Have a good day Annie <3

liza36 on 02/02/2012:
What a wonderful London trip you have planned.

Umpqua on 02/02/2012:
The London trip sounds awesome, what great timing! Sorry the cupcakes didn't work out. They're denser than regular cupcakes, but shouldn't be heavy at all. I had to look up treacle, sounds like it would work but maybe it threw off the consistency? As long as they're tasty I guess it's all good!

Umpqua on 02/02/2012:
RE the excess skin, I'm pretty lucky with that. I thought I had some on my belly but I'm pretty sure at this point that it's still FAT that needs to be gotten rid of. I guess I'll see what I'm contending with as my measurements hopefully go down. I use lots of cocoa butter and royal jelly to try to combat it too.

thenewMLE on 02/02/2012:
Thanks Granny, that 1.5 pound a week is what I am aiming for. I am 5'8" but no where near as active as you! Sweetpea sent me out to a calculator site and it determined for my age and weight I should take in 1900 calories to maintain and 1400 to lose, so maybe I have been under the mark. I have a calorie counter journal that I use that maps out your protein, carb and fat intake and lets you track your goals. But you plug in your goals and I had 1200 as my calorie goal since it looked like that was the target for most people that were being successful losing weight. I love you ladies for keeping me on my journey!!

selina on 02/02/2012:

Good morning, ladies!

Sunshine this morning but very cold.  I'm amazed at how the scale stays the same every morning within tenths of a pound!  Got two trips this month and into March, and hoping that won't change by more than a pound or two.  Will spend a couple of days with friends, one of whom is American and loves to cook Mexican food with margueritas, and make us bacon rolls for breakfast.  Yummy but not exactly a low cal low fat couple of days.  It'll be fun though as we haven't seen them in ages!

Then we begin our journey to Morocco the 24th with 11 or 12 days of eating out. I've come up with a toning workout that I can do standing as I'm sure the floors in our villa will be tile or stone (wall push ups, standing abs, glutes/hips/legs).  I'm sure there will be a lot of beach walking, although it won't be a cardio workout.  As soon as we come home I'll be eligible to join the gym at an OAP rate (senior)!

Workout today will be housework.

  • B:  porridge & pb, skimmed milk, tea
  • L:  grilled cheese sandwich with low fat cheddar, yogurt
  • S:  clementine, packet of dried apricots
  • D:  curry & rice, salad w/walnuts & sunflower seeds, drink
  • S:  glass of wine, chilli dark chocolate

Teas and water

TOTAL:  1634

Took measurements this morning:

  • Waist - 31 1/2 (still a lot of excess skin around my middle)
  • Hips - 38
  • Thighs - both are 20
  • Biceps - both are 11 (hard to measure because I still have excess skin)

Progress as of today: 35 lbs lost so far, only 0 lbs to go!

V on 02/01/2012:
Great measurements Annie!! Hey I still am at it with the skin as well. The arms are almost there and the abs are taking a little longer and slowly getting there..I use "Palmer's Cocoa Butter" on the excess skin and stretch marks, it is a good investment :) have a good day <3

I just recently visited with some 1st grade friends that we hadn't seen in 35 years!! We met with them and their 20 something kids at a bar on Bourbon St. to hear a classmates daughter sing. It was funny, because as different as we all looked, the personalities were the same! It was like time had stood still for a little while. Thirteen classmates came. It was really fun.

hollybelle on 02/01/2012:
Age DOES have its privilege - and I say take advantage of every one of them! hahahaha

sweetpea1977 on 02/02/2012:
Dang, I wanna hang out with your American friend, lol. I love Mexican food, margaritas (especially ones made with Cabo Wabo tequila), and anything involving bacon. Are the bacon rolls rolls with bacon baked in them or are the items of food with bacon wrapped around them?? If these are foods you dont run across often, enjoy yourself. Just be sure to stay active, even if its just a long walk with your American pal.

I CAN NOT wait to hear about your trip to Morroco. You will have to post a ton of pictures of the scenery and the foods you eat either here or on FB. :)

thenewMLE on 01/31/2012:
Congrats on the smoke free! That is really an accomplishment. My dad quit 50 years ago and he says he still sometimes has cravings - that's a strong addiction!! As I was telling V, the grocery walk was an accident, but it opened my eyes to another good way to spend my new energy and be productive. I don't do well with stationary exercise, but if I am walking or riding somewhere and have to come back, I can commit to that! Have a nice day!

Umpqua on 01/31/2012:
I think combining the 2 flours would work. I checked my bag and the pastry is finely milled "white whole wheat flour." The white is some weird albino variant of the regular whole wheat!

biscottibody59 on 01/31/2012:
Imagine the dollars you've saved with that one change--good job!

getmebackto150 on 01/31/2012:
your menu anad workout plan for today look fabulous!!! Congrats on the anniversery of quitting smoking! From my experience with friends and family members, not so much quitting, but actually sticking with it permanently is such a HUGE accomplishment, you should be very proud of yourself!!!

My mother quit smoking when I was in nursery school, maybe 1985?? and she started again after my dad died in 2004... Seriously??? So anyway, CONGRATS to you for taking charge of your health!!!!

legcramps on 01/31/2012:

Umpqua on 01/31/2012:
I thought that too Annie. Here's Wiki's explanation, interesting about the UK too - maybe your regular wholemeal flour there would work then?

White whole-wheat flour is flour milled from hard white spring wheat,[2] rather than traditional red wheat. In the United Kingdom, whole-wheat flour is more commonly made from white wheat instead of red as in the United States. The difference is that soft white wheat has a lower gluten content and also lacks the tannins and phenolic acid that red wheat contain, causing white whole wheat to appear and taste more like refined red wheat; it is whitish in color and does not taste bitter.[3] White whole wheat has almost the same nutrient content as red whole wheat. However, soft white whole wheat has a lower gluten content and contains a lower protein content (between 9% and 11%) when compared with harder wheats like red (15–16% protein content) or golden wheat.[

Em17 on 01/31/2012:
Have a great day!

moogy on 01/31/2012:
Yes, wholemeal and whole wheat are the same thing, both have had their outer cover on the kernel and for a cake would work the same. You could look for wholemeal bread flour which has more gluten in it if you wanted to make something 'bready'. Surely you must have had treacle tart at sometime in your life? -Pastry lined shell, with breadcrumbs and treacle with a bit of lemon baked until dark golden brown (I suspect it was a war time recipe given the meager ingredients) I remember it well and having it with clotted cream. Have a great day annie:)

moogy on 01/31/2012:
I am sure they will turn out great using wholemeal flour:) Is that a recipe from Chocolate Covered Katie?

moogy on 01/31/2012:
http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/9301/treacle+tart Just goes to show you, I thought you used treacle in this but it is the end result that tasts treacly. Yum!!

moogy on 01/31/2012:
I don't think anyone would use treacle by itself, it is very viscous and strong tasting, a bit like licorice but not as nice!! It is always used in recipes not by itself, but adds that little something that makes a real difference to your baking:)

Sunny and dry today so I did a 4 mile power walk.  Was really nice to get out in fresh air and walk by the sea.  It was about 38-40F so it took me about a mile to warm up.

Finished up the wholemeal scones as my husband has been eating them as well, so I'll either make them again with some changes so they'll be less dry, or I'll try an Apple Bran Muffin recipe next.

Hope all of you are doing well!

Hi ladies!  We had some sleet this morning but then the sun came out and it looked so pretty with the snow (only) on the tops of the mountains.

I've been seriously craving junk and high fat foods.  Feeling a bit deprived I guess.  At home we only occasionally eat meat and I've even stopped buying lunchmeat for a sandwich at lunch.  But today I went shopping and bought some liver pate and some lean ground steak. I've been thinking about a cheeseburger for a couple of months and haven't had one yet.  So I'm going to make one for lunch after I use up my veggie sausages.  I'll stay within calories.

Went to the health food store and bought the oat bran to make the scones and I'll do that tomorrow morning.

Could your cravings be from your recent trip to the US? Did you eat differently than your usual healthy fare? It may be hard to get back in the swing of things, although you seem to be doing well. My experience with cravings that strong, like your cheesburger one, is to have one. It will backfire at some point if you deny yourself too long. Just enjoy it, and then workout!

I always think it is a good idea to come up with a healthy way to feed a craving. I always end up eating anything that isn't nailed down if I ignore it. Hope you enjoy your cheeseburger, every delicious mouthfull:) Have a lovely weekend grannyannie, stay warm:)

sweetpea1977 on 01/27/2012:
Mmmm, steak burgers! If you have access to ground bison meat there, I'd recommend that as well. I heard that ostrich makes a good burger as well. :)

It must be something in the air!! I was craving a cheeseburger so bad yesterday that I could have hurt someone!! Fortunately I was at work so there was no way that was going to happen. Then the craving shifted to brownies or a chocolate eclair! I got home and immediately started creating that spinach salad and baking the crab cakes so I wouldn't feel the need to satisfy that craving. At work, I pulled out the almonds and pretended they were covered in chocolate. Isn't that sad? Your toast with PBJ has given me a new snack idea using the simply fruit jelly with no added sugar. Thanks for the inspiration!! Have a nice weekend

lol, after leaving that bison comment, I couldnt stop thinking about a bison burger from Ted's Montana Grill (as in Ted Turner, the guy who founded CNN, TBS, TNT, etc) so we ate there tonight. It was super-good!! Anyway, I hope you can find it for cheap somewhere!

Good morning, lovely ladies!    Here's a sunrise for you that I shot from the front porch in my robe, brrrr

Went to Zumba last night.  I was the only newbie there so the rest seemed to know most of the moves.  More complicated moves than I thought.  I can see it would be fun once you know the moves.  Guess I did some overaggressive hip thrusting or something as I've hurt one side of my lower back.  Don't plan to go back to an evening class but discovered there is an early afternoon class with another instructor.  So I'll try to work that in with my gym visits once I rejoin in early March.

When I came home I threw my good intentions out the window and had a semi-binge - pbj toast, packet of baked crisps, 2 portions of dark chocolate, hot chocolate.  Total cals for the day was still okay, but eating all that at that time of night wasn't good.  Stayed up later than normal.

Yesterday morning I enjoyed an hour and a half Skyping with my sis in law in Australia.  I love feeling so connected!

Couldn't find oat bran for my scones but hub is going into town today and I've asked him to hunt.  If he finds it I'll make some this afternoon.

Workout:  none - backache

  • B:  porridge/raisins/almonds, skimmed milk, tea
  • L:  2 Quorn southern style patties with lite mayo on 1 slice wholegrain bread, yogurt
  • S:  1 clementine, banana
  • D:  veggie curry & rice, salad w/walnuts & sunflower seeds, drink
  • S:  glass of wine, packet of baked crisps
  • Teas and water

TOTAL:  1606

One of the avocados is finally ripe so I'll add a bit of that to my salad.

Hubby couldn't find any oat bran so I phoned the health food store and they have it. So hope to get some tomorrow and maybe some other baking ingredients and some new vegetarian stuff for variety.

I was going to order the oat bran online but the cost of shipping was outrageous.  £3.50 for 3 bags of oat bran and £6.97 just for the shipping! Don't think so!

Progress as of today: 35 lbs lost so far, only 0 lbs to go!

What a beautiful photo! You are so lucky to have such a wonderful view from your porch - I have townhouses across the street that blocks the view :( Have a great day!

V on 01/26/2012:
NICE view :) Good job on the Zumba class.. Next time take it easy and as long as you are moving, who cares if the moves are not perfected ;) You will get there my friend..Good deal on having another option as far as an earlier class as well as another instructor..I wonder if they have a beginner's class you can check out? Oh I have been meaning to tell you that the girl in my Extreme class Donna reminds me of you so much, I feel like I am working out with YOU <3 Oh and of course you have an open invite for dinner with me anytime my friend <3 Have a good day!

hollybelle on 01/26/2012:
Beautiful picture. Sorry your back is sore! I don't know if it's like this everywhere, but here in my town none of the Zumba instructors really "call" the moves, they just kind of explain it and expect everyone to just fall in on it. That's odd to me, because having taught all kind of exercise classes back in the day - we prided ourselves on calling prior to the next move in rhythm, etc. Anyway - V is right - as long as you have fun and are moving - it's all good. Zumba revealed a weakness in my knees in the fall of 2010, so although I would like to do Zumba 3-5 times a week, I will only do it 1-2 times. Riding my bike this summer seems to have helped my knees somewhat, but I still have to "watch out" for them. Carry on, sweetie! You are terrific!

sweetpea1977 on 01/26/2012:
Im so jealous that you have that view EVERY DAY! My parents own a house on a lake and on the beach and both have very nice views. This photo makes me want to escape to the Blue Ridge Mountains and enjoy a week or two of sunrises over the many lakes and peaks. Absolutely gorgeous!

Zumba looks like so much fun. Unfortunately, it only seems to take place once a week at my gym, on Wednesday nights during my personal training session. Right now, the class is jammed pack with women with new years resolutions to lose weight. Its hard to find a parking spot on Wed nights because of these gals! :) Thats ok though. Its nice to see so many people excited about exercise.

Glad you were able to fine the oat bran somewhere. Its so easy to find here!

Umpqua on 01/26/2012:
I love that picture! Good for you for trying Zumba, sorry you hurt your back. And good deal on tracking down the oat bran, we take for granted that we can just get it in the cereal section of the grocery here. You're really branching out and trying new things Annie, You rock!

getmebackto150 on 01/26/2012:
That photo is BEAUTIFUL! You definitely live in a beautiful place... Zumba definitely completely depends on the instructor, I find with certain ones I LOVE it and others not so much... I'm curious to see how you like it with the other instructor... Have a great day!

Sorry your back hurts today; hope you're feeling better soon. Awesome picture!

h82bfat on 01/26/2012:
Yeah for you & Zumba! I've been giving some serious thought to getting the Wii game to try it out before going venturing out in public!! Hope your back feels better!

Maria7 on 01/26/2012:
Thanks for sharing the beautiful photo! Hope you are having a good day. :-)

moogy on 01/26/2012:
LOL at the over zealous hip thrusting, although sorry you damaged yourself. Lovely photo, worth getting a bit of a nip for it:) I was wondering what triggered your mini binge after doing great exercise, glad you didn't damage your calories with it though. I hope you have a great day tomorrow:)

thinkpositive on 01/27/2012:
Beautiful picture. I know what you mean about your Zumba class- it all depends on the teacher. For me I went to a daytime class with an older crowd & loved it & then went to a Sat. class & thought i woudl die it was very different. And yes I think it can be a bit hard on hips & kneees.Easy enough to do the moves that work for your body. Mini binge- yes I'm familiar... it happens. And then later I think- what just happened there..? I talked to a friend from home for an hour this morning & I know it feels good to connect.

Good morning, girls!  Happy Robbie Burns Day to all Scots!  (national poet of Scotland)

Playing with calories again until I figure it out. Going for 1800 cals on intense workout days, less on moderate and rest days.

Wasn't going to do any baking for a while but I pulled out an old GI diet book which has a few high fibre, low fat recipes.  I'm going to try making Wholemeal Scones with raisins and chopped dried apricots.  Looks like a very healthy snack and something good to take on the road for daytrips.  179 cals each.  I'll post the menu if they turn out well.

Did a brief meditation last night and my mind was nonstop chattering. But that's typical. Just have to keep at it.

all housework
my intentions are to try out a zumba class tonight

B:  porridge/raisins/almonds, skimmed milk, tea
L:  pbj on toast, yogurt, 2 clementines, added 200 ml skimmed milk to wash down the pbj
S: 4pm: salad w/walnuts/sunflower seeds, melba toast & Quorn patty
Zumba at 6.30?
D/S: banana, yogurt with sunflower seeds (potassium & protein)
Maybe a glass of red wine after.

TOTAL:  ??

Progress as of today: 35 lbs lost so far, only 0 lbs to go!
