Have a wonderful Memorial Day for those in the USA!

Day 5 of warm, sunny, gorgeous weather in Scotland! Sometimes when it's dreary, grey and cold for a long time it's easy to forget what a gorgeous country this is. But when this happens - bliss!

99% packed for our trip. I've just finished cleaning the house as I like to come home to a clean one after a long trip. Cleaned out the fridges as we're going to turn them off. Freezer is empty. 

Tomorrow after breakfast we take buses into Glasgow, stop for lunch, and head to the airport hotel which is about a 3 minute walk to the terminal. Our flight leaves early the next morning. I'm planning to continue logging my meals and workouts on DD to keep me on the straight and narrow. 

Workout:

Serious housework!

When my lunch is sufficiently digested I'm going to do my strenth trainiing:

  • dumbbells
  • planks
  • push ups
  • side dips with dumbbell
  • lots of abs
  • thighs/glutes with ankle weights
  • squats
  • lunges with dumbbells

I am pledging to the ladies of DD that I will do the strength routines that I've planned out 3 times a week. Cardio I'm not worried about. I'll get plenty. 

Menu:

  • B:  porridge/raisins/almonds/skimmed milk, tea w/milk
  • L:  2 multigrain toast w/pbj, skinny cappuccino with evil artificial sugar 
  • S:  2 clementines
  • D:  last of the leftover veggie curry & rice, salad, drink
  • S:  hot chocolate, walnuts/almonds/raisins
  • Teas & lots of water

TOTAL:  1458

Day 4 of perfect weather!  It hit 80 yesterday and that is very rare for this part of Scotland.  Forecast is for the same - sunny and 70's through Monday.  It will be much cooler on Tuesday but we'll be on the plane.  Looks like we are heading to temps in the 90's in Michigan.  

We awoke to no electricity this morning.   No idea why or how many houses are out - certainly wasn't caused by the weather!  Finally just came back on and it's 5.30pm!  Fortunately we have a gas hob we can cook on if we light it with a match.  I had no excuse to spend too much time on the internet so got a lot done.  Finished packing except for a couple of last minute things.  Cleaned the house except for a couple of loads of laundry and the vacuuming. And enjoyed the warmth and sun outdoors for a while. 

Menu:

  • B:  porridge/raisins/almonds/skimmed milk, tea w/milk
  • L:  1 multigrain toast (made in a fry pan!), pbj
  • S:  1 clementine, oat and fruit bar
  • D:  curry & rice, salad with sunflower seeds, drink
  • S:  1 glass of red wine
  • Teas and water

TOTAL:  1579

Countdown til vacay :) Yipee! RYC although the "tropical storm" is on the opposite coast, I am sure we will get some well needed substantial rain and we are clear of the severe weather.. I will def keep you all posted :) I hope you enjoyed some fun in the sun today <3

Third day in a row with perfect weather - sunny and low to mid 70's!    It's supposed to be the same through Monday and then cool down a bit on Tuesday (which is the day we leave for the very HOT US).  

Last day at the gym until we come home near the end of June. I really really hate packing! "What did I forget?  Did I pack too much?  Did I pack too little?" I use a packing list but even then..... it's stuff like both my passports, the paper portion of my UK drivers license, electrical converters, all my non-perfumed toiletries, GPS, chargers for everything, all the electronic stuff....

Workout at gym:

  • 35 mins spin bike
  • 15 mins elliptical
  • 4 sets of 10 on 6 resistance machines
  • cables/pulley for triceps

Workout at home:

  • dumbbells
  • planks
  • push ups
  • side dips with dumbbell
  • lots of abs
  • thighs/glutes with ankle weights
  • squats
  • lunges with dumbbells

 Menu:

  • B:  porridge/raisins/almonds/skimmed milk, tea w/milk
  • S:  post gym:  10 g of whole almonds
  • L:  egg salad sandwich on multigrain bread
  • S:  banana, 3 clementines
  • D:  curry & rice, salad
  • S:  hot chocolate, almonds
  • Teas & water

TOTAL: 1502

haha, hubby and I packed a ton of electronics for our honeymoon. we almost missed our flight home because security was suspicious of our big bag of electronics. lol

Another perfect day here and if you know anything about Scottish weather you'll know what a big deal that is!  It's mid 70'sF and sunny.

Trying to make sure we have no perishable food left when we leave for our trip next week. Doing well.  

Workout:

  • 30 mins of INTENSE spin bike class!

Menu:

  • B:  porridge/raisins/almonds/skimmed milk, tea w/milk
  • S:  post spin class:  2 oatcakes, pb
  • L:  egg salad sandwich, yogurt
  • S:  2 clementines
  • D:  veg curry & rice, salad, drink
  • S:  last oatcake (find them hard to resist!), hot chocolate
  • Teas and lots of water

those guys (instructors) have all what it takes :) They just hide stuff! :D My RPM instructor always uses a protection, and he puts it gently and discreetly while no one's looking (at least he thinks so, hahah)

Great news on 2 sunny warm days in a row! RE your last entry, I think you are right not to deprive yourself and then go overboard on your trip, I've been there and done that myself. I remember a beach trip when I was 18 on which I ate an entire bag of Pepperidge Farm cookies after starving myself ;P

Yay for another day of perfect weather in Scotland! Its gearing up for a hot weekend here. 88F for the high today and 94 by Saturday. Sounds like the perfect weekend to go swimming and play in the sprinklers. :)

You must be so excited for your upcoming trip. That's one thing I never liked about going away - packing and making sure the house is in order. The hubby just takes care of himself but I have to handle the house, pack my stuff and make sure I've made arrangements for someone to look after the cats and my plants while I'm gone. It is such a chore sometimes. Next Friday, 6/1, I will be leaving for Richmond, VA area to visit my sister for 5 days. Fortunately, hubby will be home to take care of the cats and house so this trip will be much easier on me. Have a GREAT day!

Absolute perfection here today!  Mid 70's and sunny! It was so nice to see people walking around in capris, shorts, short sleeves or sleeveless.  

I'm no longer trying to get down a couple of pounds below ideal. It was making me feel deprived, which as Holly pointed out, it's not good to begin a trip feeling deprived. Just need to have control and not go overboard.  

Workout:

  • 35 mins spin bike
  • 20 mins elliptical
  • 4 sets of 10 on 6 resistance machines
  • cables/pulley for triceps
Didn't do my strength routines at home after the gym as the weather was too perfect to stay inside.  So hub and I went for a bike ride to the botanic gardens with a visit to the cafe.  Botanic gardens are 14 miles roundtrip.  

Menu:

  • B:  porridge/raisins/almonds/skimmed milk, tea w/milk
  • S:  post workout:  2 oatcakes w/pb
  • L:  2 Quorn patties on 1 slice multigrain w/mayo, peas, yogurt
  • S:  Botanic gardens cafe - the best lemon drizzle cake ever!  Smallish piece.  Moist with a nice sugary coating on top - had tea instead of the full fat cappuccino they serve
  • D:  veg curry & rice, drink
  • S:  hot chocolate, 2 oatcakes, 1/2 bottle of pear cider
  • Teas & water

TOTAL:  approx 1800 cals

Our gig as B & B host/hostess is finished! Again, I didn't have strong resistance. Hope this isn't a sign of things to come on our trip to the US! NO. NO. NO! I WILL use sense in eating on my travels!

Those chunky chocolate chip cookies I bought for the guests to have with tea were so yummy!  I gave them 3 of which they ate 2.  So 5 - 2 = yep, you guessed it.  Has 2 big glasses of red wine after dinner.  

No way I would ever want to run a B & B. They are so much work!  We only had 2 guests but when the house is full it must be a nightmare. They are given a menu for breakfast and of course everybody wants something different. This morning the man wanted 1 fried egg, 2 pieces of bacon, 1 sausage, 2 fried tomatoes, fried mushrooms, black pudding, baked beans. The woman wanted 1 fried egg (at least they wanted their eggs the same way), 1 bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, baked beans.  Hubby cooked, I served, and cleaned up. At least we didn't have to clean the bedroom and change the sheets (a cleaner will do that). You'll be surprised to learn that neither of the couple were overweight. But a lot of people will do that on holidays - huge breakfast.  We have done the same but I'm a lot better than I used to be.  

Workout - at home:

  • dumbbells
  • planks
  • push ups
  • side dips with dumbbell
  • lots of abs
  • thighs/glutes with ankle weights
  • squats
  • lunges with dumbbells

To help with the guilt I'll probably do jump rope, exercise bike or some other cardio.

Menu:

  • B:  bacon roll (mmmm), 1 poached egg, 1 bite of sausage, 1/2 Danish, baked beans, tea w/milk
  • L:  1 multigrain toast w/pbj, yogurt
  • S:  fresh pineapple, clementine
  • D:  veggie curry & rice, salad, drink
  • S:  Bottle of Stella Artois the B & B guests left, oatcakes
  • Teas & water

TOTAL:  unknown

Congrats for surviving your stint as a host..I think that is really nice of you and hubby to do this for your friends, even cooler is they are going to take care of your yard during your visit to the states!!I think i would have enjoyed cooking for others, I know weird right? It sounds like your friends got the best deal on the barter/trade Hosting for lawn mowing, but then again, I haven't seen your yard! I was just thinking about vacation strategy when I was commenting on Supercheese's diary. I used to cut back so much the week or two before that I totally went nuts with food on vacation. I just wish I had a vacation planned to use some strategy for! Maybe in the Fall. Around October. We'll see.

Yay for making it through your hosting gig! I would probably eat a lot given that B&B menu, I find it hard to resist bacon and eggs. Oh and I didn't steam the wallpaper off, soaked it with a water/fabric softener solution and scraped it off. It's a long and tedious process but a good workout at least with a great payout in the end!

I'm smiling as I read your post. I had never stayed at a B&B until my trip to Lancaster, PA. It was a delightful experience but I also realized that having this type of business is a LOT of work plus you never know who will be staying under your roof. I'm not sure that it's all that profitable either. Glad your stint is finished (as are you). To thank you and your hubby, your friends should mow your lawn, water your plants, walk your pets (if you have any) for at least TWO months - not just while you're away. Have a good day.

lol, one of the things I want to do when I win the lottery is to go to cooking school for the hell of it. I dont want to open a restaurant, I just wanna expand on this cooking passion of mine. I'd love meeting new people at my B & B, though Im sure its also a lot of work. I think ideally, I'd rather own a few mountain cabins, spend thousands of dollars decorating them to perfection, and renting them out as vacation homes (when Im not using them!) and make lots of money off of them.

I still dont know what a bacon roll is...Im sure its fantastic. I LOVE BACON!

Loved reading about your B&B hosting. I have a friend ( his wife & good friend who ran it with him died about 8 years ago) who runs a B &B in ME. I realized that I'm not up for being that sunny in the mornign with strangers. That's a big deal to serve such an extensive cooked to order breakfast. I liked the B&B in Hawaii- bed and beach! they just drop off a basket of muffins & leave coffee on in an outside area. That would be my speed!

Hiya girls! Hope you all had a good weekend. We are back at the B & B tonight for one couple who are coming. They leave after breakfast tomorrow and that'll be the end of our gig. I picked up some goodies for the guests as there aren't any fresh ones in the B & B. We are supposed to offer them tea and a snack when they arrive, so I bought a bag of 5 bakery chocolate chip cookies. As you can guess, I will have 1 or 2 of them unless I can get hubby to eat one. I also got 3 Danish to add to their bread tray for tomorrow's breakfast. Bought a couple of bakery rolls for hubby and me so we can have bacon rolls for breakfast. 

Our friends offered to pay us for our work but a better exchange is for the husband to cut our grass while we are away in the US for nearly a month.  

Then I'm going to be VERY VERY GOOD until we check into the airport hotel on Monday night. Just hoping our friends don't invite us for a fattening dinner with lots of wine when they come back from their trip!  

Workout at the gym:

  • 35 mins spin bike
  • about 10 mins elliptical as I was short of time
  • 4 sets of 10 on 6 resistance machines
  • cables/pulley for triceps

I will do the at-home strength training tomorrow.  

BTW Sweetpea, I finally tried triceps dips and they are hard! Will keep doing those and have added to my routine for our trip. 

Menu:

  • B:  porridge/raspberries/skimmed milk, tea w/milk
  • S:  post workout:  2 oatcakes and pb
  • L:  2 Quorn Southern style patties on 1 slice multigrain with light mayo, yogurt, peas
  • S:  pineapple
  • D:  veggie curry & rice, salad
  • S:  chocolate chips cookie(s), small slice of apple pie, maybe a glass of wine

TOTAL:  should be well under 2,000

How neat that you can trade tasks with the couple at the B & B! I love that kind of cooperative effort. I have often thought that families should share cooking - one family cook a meal for 3 families and give to two others - that way everyone would get 3 meals and cook once and have three diff things. Weird?? I will say I would probably be picky about who I co-ooped with on that one! Tri cep dips are my favorite tricep move. They are hard and that's probably why I haven't done them in AGES! LOL Keep up the good work!

What an awesome barter! I always thought it would be fun to work at a B&B, but not on a regular basis. You get the best of both worlds this way, very nice :)

P.S. Those tricep dips are in my Brazil classes and they are killer but very effective!

I'd love to run a B & B, but Im not sure how disciplined I would be cooking and serving all the rich foods. lol! Im drooling over all the goodies you bought for your guests. Anyway, I like the payment you asked for. Thats great you'll have someone to care for your yard while you are away!

And a big yay for tricep dips!! Using your own body weight is an awesome resistance tool! :)

Well, we stayed the night at our friends' B & B and I will confess that I did indulge but could have been worse. Way too many Scottish shortbread cookies!!  Couldn't seem to leave them alone and I believe they are made with butter. I only had one glass of wine which is odd for me, especially when staying in a house with a huge wine selection. Had a small slice of apple pie with ice cream.  

This is a rest day so no workouts, although cleaning up this morning at the B & B felt like a workout.  

  • B:  poached egg, 2 slices of (meaty) bacon, 1 sausage (not very fatty), toast, shortbread.  
  • L:  Was putting away the breakfast stuff and noticed leftover English muffins and a jar of Nuttella. So I toasted a couple of those.  The wife had made me a small apple pie, so had a small slice of that. More shortbread.   
  • S:  clementine, yogurt
  • D:  something healthy, probably a veggie curry & rice, salad
  • S:  Might share my bottle of hard pear cider with hubby, a couple of oatcakes

No idea how many calories I had.  

Our friends are still away till Wednesday and have a couple of guests coming Monday night, so we'll be staying the night again.  

It's getting very close to when we leave for the US, so I'd better be careful or I'll be needing to lose when we get there!

Stay strong with your choices. Definitely above and beyond the call of duty to be exposed when you're trying for the best possible food choices:-)

BTW, have you been practicing your meditation recently? I hadn't noticed that you'd mentioned it.

Keep up the good work--your consistency is sooo admirable!

Hello girls!  Well, the evening ended in an unexpected way! Hub and I had dinner at 5.30 and just after 7.30 I was enjoying my glass of wine and oatcakes and got a phone call from our friends wondering why we hadn't shown up for dinner. Long story short - miscommunication between the 2 hubbies.  

Anyway, we said we couldn't eat but we'd come over. Had lots of red wine and I had a brownie with ice cream. Later in the evening after several glasses of wine the wife offered me the last brownie. Didn't want to hurt her feelings, so I ate it. OMG!   

Our friends have a B & B and they are taking a trip for the next few days and we are hosting their guests and spending the night at their house tonight and Monday night. The meatball and steak curry that was supposed to be our dinner last night has been saved and hubby and I have that for dinner tonight. My husband is cooking breakfast for the guests tomorrow morning and I'm helping serve and clean up. Chances are good that I will have bacon and eggs for breakfast as the smell will fill the house and make me drool. The bacon here is not like American but is sort of like Canadian but better. There will be cakes, doughnuts, and homemade breads there to tempt me, but I'll try to be strong. 

Workout:  (I didn't do my at-home after gym workout yesterday so did it this morning, and added in a bit of cardio as well.)

  • planks - 2 types
  • push ups
  • side dips with dumbbell
  • lots of abs
  • thighs/glutes with ankle weights
  • squats

  • jump rope - 100
  • 10 mins on my exercise bike at high speed/resistance

  • D:  leftover meatball & steak curry & rice, naan bread, and ??
  • Red wine

TOTAL:  anybody's guess

That reminds me of when my daughter, sister and niece went to a cute B&B in Lancaster, PA. The owners were away to attend a wedding so their good friends were our hosts. They were very nice and we had a lovely breakfast. I'm sure that despite the work, you will have a lovely experience. Have you ever done this for them before? Good luck in abstaining from the goodies. You can do it!

Hiya girls!  Recovered from yesterday's killer spin bike class.

Didn't have time for the elliptical today as I wanted to pick up a few things at the shop before I caught the bus. But then I didn't need to rush as I ran into hubby in the locker room as I was leaving and he was coming in to go swimming. He had driven and told me to take the car. So I didn't have to rush while I shopped.

When walking past the chocolate section debating about whether it would be safe to have a dark chocolate bar in the house, this brazen wee Cadbury milk chocolate bar just jumped right into my trolley.  Tried to force it back on the shelf but it was stronger than me and I finally gave in. 95 calories. Not the end of the world. Just finished letting each of the 3 bites slowly melt in mouth to get the full flavour. Whew! Maybe I should avoid that area of the shop on future trips?!  Or not. 

Workout - gym:

  • 35 mins spin bike
  • 4 sets of 10 on 6 resistance machines
  • cables/pulley for triceps
Workout - home:
  • dumbbells
  • planks
  • push ups
  • side dips with dumbbell
  • lots of abs

If I have enough energy left, I'll also do my lower body routines instead of waiting till tomorrow. 

Menu:
  • B:  porridge/raisins/almonds/skimmed milk, tea w/milk
  • S:  post workout:  2 oatcakes w/pb
  • L:  2 scrambled eggs with 1 slice low fat cheddar, multigrain toast with light spread & jam, 3 bites of yummy chocolate
  • S:  2 clementines
  • D:  leek/potato/pea soup, toast w/light spread, salad, drink
  • S:  1 glass of red wine, 2 oatcakes
  • Teas & water
TOTAL:  1739
 
 
 

Progress as of today: 37 lbs lost so far, only 0 lbs to go!

What a nice hubby to offer you the car. And that chocolate, well...that's an essential in life and you handled it very well. Have a great weekend.

Chocolate is a real treat. Every other week I have been buying the Lindt Excellence Dark Choc with Chili. I can have two squares for 95 calories each day for 5 days. It's a nice afternoon pick me up!

Girl you will be just fine as hard as you go with the workouts..Besides good food is not the enemy, you live a healthy lifestyle so don't feel bad about having some chocolate :) Have a wonderful day Annie <3

Doesn't it melt wonderfully pressed into the roof of your mouth? I only have dark chocolate now, but love love love Cadbury milk choc, especially black forest!! I read ran into hubby in the locker room and was expecting something spicy!!! never mind! Hope you have a wonderful weekend annie:)
