Good day, ladies!  

Went through all my clothes this morning and every single piece of 'big' clothing are in two big bin bags and will soon be headed to a charity shop. I even had to get rid of some XL tshirts that I had. Got rid of trousers, skirt, shorts, capris. Think I'll go to the British Red Cross Shop with them this time. One of the pairs of shorts that I kept were bought in the mid 90's I think.  They fit well now, but I remember when they were so big I couldn't wear them - they were huge in the waist. That was during one of skinny periods when I weighed under 120 pounds.  It broke my heart   but I have to give away my very favourite capris. I wore them in Uganda all the time, even when I lost a lot of weight and had to hold them up with a belt.  Comfy and have good secure pockets with zippers on them.  

This morning the scale said 131.8 but my waist which was down to 31 is now 32.  Huh?!    Oh well.  I'll just keep working and do my programme at the gym and at home. I'll vary my calories as well to higher on gym days.  

Goal:  29" waist (28?), supertoned everywhere, strength, stamina!


Housework, cleaning out closets, cupboards. laundry, etc. 


  • B:  porridge, raspberries, skimmed milk, tea w/milk
  • L:  polenta, 2 eggs, yogurt
  • S:  banana
  • D:  soup, 4 oatcakes, salad w/walnuts, drink

I know it feels good to empty out the closet, but it does feel like you are giving away old friends!! My empty outs have always been in the other direction- giving away clothes that had become too small. My rational was that if I could ever fit them again they would be out of style and I should treat myself to something new!! My weight gain was very gradual so it took several years before something just didn't fit anymore but I had to learn to let it go!! Congrats on the weight drop and good luck on the toning! I know you can do it! Your diary weight record is an inspiration to me to see that it really can happen!!!

The railroad bike trails must be popular everywhere. There is one a couple of hours north of here in the state of Ohio called The Little Miami Rails to Trails path - it's 100 miles of paved trail along the old RR tracks. Goes through little towns with cafes, etc. I want to ride it, but everytime I try it has rained! Good work on the closet purge!

Great day!  Had a review and plan done for me at the gym today. The trainer asked what I wanted to work on and what I've been doing. He corrected my abs routines which often hurt my neck or lower back. He also gave me a couple of new ones using the ball and also one for my back. He also corrected one of my squats routines. I mentioned all the loose skin around my middle and he gave me some moves using the pulley/weight machine. Also had help on the spin machine but needed to bring headphones to use the video with instruction.  A written plan is being done for me and will be there on Friday

I ran into two people I hadn't seen in years which was really nice - one on the bus who invited me to lunch next Monday, and one in the gym who used to be my boss back in 2001.  


  • 4 sets of 10 on 6 pieces of Nautilus resistance equipment
  • 20 mins elliptical machine
  • 10 mins spin bike
  • a few abs routines
  • 3 exercises on the pulley/weights equipment
  • 4 sets of dumbbells at home


  • B:  porridge/strawberries/blueberries, skimmed milk, tea w/milk
  • S:  after gym - yogurt bars
  • L:  pbj on multigrain seeded toast, yogurt, clementine, 1 oat cake
  • D:  veg soup, 3 oatcakes w/pb, salad w/walnuts, drink
  • S:  hot chocolate, yogurt bars
  • Teas and water

TOTAL:  1494

Great stuff indeed! The earplugs with the music is cool! I think they don't have it here, at least I haven't seen such thing yet. In my gym they have the TV on, but normally they show MTV or VH1... last year they were showing the news but this year, nothing like that.

I'm glad you can get "professional" guidance on your exercises. Sometimes we do the same thing over and over without realizing that it can be done differently or easier. My daughter's old swim coach used to say - practice does not make perfect, it makes permanence! Have a great day!

Good morning, ladies! I'm anxious to get a gym/home routine figured out.  Since spin class doesn't start until the end of April I'm going to use the one they have in the gym. It has programmes to choose or to set up your own. I'll get help with it when I go in tomorrow. 

The scale said 135.8 on Thursday morning after we returned from our trip. This morning it said 131.8.  How much of that was fluid is anybody's guess, but I do feel 'smaller' than when we got home.  However, my main goals now are build muscle, gain strength, be toned, be fit, increase stamina!!!  Oh yea, and for this excess skin to tighten up or simply magically disappear instead of just hanging there looking flabby.  I know, I know, takes time. 


  • 45 mins tae bo/jump rope
  • abs - since I didn't do any yesterday


  • B:  porridge/blueberries/skimmed milk, tea w/milk
  • L:  grilled cheese sandwich, yogurt
  • S:  clementine
  • D:  veg chili or curry & rice, salad, drink
  • S:  packet of baked crisps, hot chocolate
  • Teas & water

TOTAL:  1349

I studied Japanese for nearly 10 years (off and on) but still can't read the newspaper, ha! It's a hard language to learn and to keep. I can carry on a conversation fairly easily, though.

I got my ankle weights last night! they have the little pouches where I can incrementally increase or decrease the weight. I got 2.5 pounders. I hope to start tonight. Last night we cooked dinner, entertained MIL, gave an interview to a 5th grader for married couples, and I dropped off some recipes and visited with an old friend until bed time. We did squeeze a walk in after the interview. Enjoy your day and thanks for the guidance!

Went to the gym this morning to renew my membership after nearly 6 years. Didn't get a full workout as I had to do paperwork, choose which type of membership, set up direct debit.  Didn't get an induction as I've been a member before and they were booked up with some newbies. Had to ask for some help on the resistance machines as all the machines were new since I'd been a member. There's only one stepper machine but I noticed one spinning bike so asked about possible spinning classes in the future. YES!!  Woohoo!   The end of April they plan to start spinning classes. I'll have to sign up ahead of time. Weds I go back in and they'll help me work out a plan depending on what I want to work on.  There are classes using the ball as well. Looks like a lot of the classes are at 1.30pm which makes no sense to me. Does that mean I have to finish lunch by 11.30 to avoid indigestion??  

I used my free 'old lady' bus pass to get to the gym.    Then after the gym I bought two bags of groceries and took the bus home.  

Workout - sort of:

  • 10 mins treadmill
  • 10 mins stepper
  • 3 - 4 sets on 5 resistance machines


  • B:  porridge/raisins/almonds/skimmed milk, tea w/milk
  • S:  missed the bus and was starving after the gym, so bought some yogurt bars - 142 cals.
  • L:  liver pate and oatcakes
  • S:  strawberries
  • D:  chickpea curry & rice, salad, drink 
  • S:  packet of baked crisps
  • Teas and water

TOTAL:  1422

Bike Riding - My issue is placement of my "ischial tuberosities" on the saddle. Need some adjustments so that I do not "ride up" the saddle over distance riding in the drops, etc. If I can't get proper placement of the wider part of the saddle with the adjustment I may have to purchase a wider built saddle. Excited for your new gym membership - sounds fun.

As for when to eat, I've heard that its best to have at least an hour between a main meal and a major workout to avoid stomach issues.

I've been debating about joining a gym as well. I have been part of gyms in the past, many years ago, but never went and it was a waste of money. I also don't know how to use all the machines, and a personal trainer is expensive. I'm still debating.

Tokyo- yes, we've been posted there twice before early in my husband's career with the foreign service. I was much younger then, and decided to go back to school. This time it's going to be a totally different experience. We are excited!

Good morning, ladies!  Thanks for the comments.  I'm not sick, my hubby is.  I was sick for a fairly short time but that was over a week ago.  

Scale down to 132.0.  However, I don't feel smaller.  A bra never lies!  

Tomorrow I'm going into town to re-join the gym - senior rate and I get to use my free bus pass   It's been 5 years since I've been so I hope any changes are good ones. It's a very small gym so there isn't room for tons of equipment.  I already have a schedule figured out: MWF gym - 30 mins cardio, about 45 mins on resistance machiines, abs class and stretching.  So about 1.5 hours. Since I have dumbbells at home I don't want to spend extra time in they gym using theirs, so will do those after I come home on gym day.  Tu/Th/Sa either tae bo/jump rope, spinning on my bike, power walking, or bicycling outdoors. Sunday: rest.


  • 45 mins tae bo/jump rope
  • 20 mins spinning


  • B:  porridge/strawberries/skimmed milk, tea w/milk
  • L:  2 wholegrain seeded toast w/liver pate, yogurt
  • S:  clementine, apple
  • D:  chickpea curry & rice, salad w/walnuts, drink

This was our first morning there (I'm actually wearing a dress!) and I don't remember the sky being gray, but if it was, it didn't last long.  The sky was normally a beautiful shade of blue. We joked about the monotony of waking up to sunshine and clear skies every day!

Scale was the same this morning as yesterday - 133.8.  That's okay.  It was fluid loss.  I did eat a lot of salty foods while we were gone.   

While we were in Morocco 3 of us got diarrhea and hubby still has it. You aren't supposed to drink the water and must be careful with washing salads or eating salads while out. So hubby is hanging around the house and he was supposed to be at a political meeting all day today. I was looking forward to working on my French programme but can't do it until he's out of the living room. I can only use the programme on my PC. I use headphones and a microphone and either he has the tv on which is distracting, or he's reading and my speaking French distracts him. I really enjoyed using what little French I could speak while in Morocco and want to expand it.  

The souk (market) was huge and spectacular. I didn't get a lot of photos because of the many offers to me to take photos of the goods and a tip would have been expected. So I had to be a bit sneaky. They would have all had their hands out if they saw me tipping.


  • 40 mins spinning on my exercise bike (stand/sit/stand/sit, etc)


  • B:  porridge/strawberries/skimmed milk, tea w/milk

I finally got to look at your blog and your photos and I am blown away. The colors they use in the architecture are so vivid - amazing! Sorry your hubby is still not feeling well, that's really no joke when they tell you not to drink the water. I hope he feels better soon. Good for you for expanding your French, I did a program like that before we went to Italy and learned enough to get by. Came in handy when we rented a car and drove through Tuscany and had to navigate through some smaller villages!

Thank you ma'am! I just didn't know how much was effective and I will see if I can manage those sets and reps and if not, I will work my way up to it. Before my journey to get fit again, when I would come home from work mentally drained, I would prepare dinner and then sit on the sofa with my iPad and play Scrabble and words with friends. That is the time that I am converting to "home exercise". So far my only problem is my fuzzy children needing to put their noses in my face since I am on THEIR floor or actually standing over me to rub their belly while I am trying to do my crunches! Thanks again!

Moment of truth!  I am embarrassed to admit that the day before we left - Feb 24th - I weighed 131.4.  This morning I weighed 135.8.    Okay, maybe a pound will be fluid retention due to salt, but not more than that.  I did really enjoy myself even when I was shoving pastries in my mouth and guzzling wine and alarm bells were going off in my head.  

3 weeks from today we have a 5 day trip to London and by that time I WILL weigh 132, my goal weight.  

Very busy today.  Tons of laundry, unpacking, etc.  I'll try to get in a workout this afternoon.  


  • B:  porridge/strawberries/skimmed milk, tea with milk
  • L:  liver pate on 1 slice toast, yogurt
  • S:  pineapple, clementine

I dont think thats a bad gain at all. When I went on my weeklong honeymoon, I gained 8lbs! Half of it came off pretty quick (water!) but it didnt take but another week or two get back to my pre-honeymoon weight. Dont stress! :)

Hello ladies!  Back home from Morocco.  We really enjoyed it!!  Will step on the scale tomorrow but I know I won't be happy with the number.  I have gained but don't know how much.  It's not water gain, not retention from salt.  It was pure indulgence.  Not making excuses, but being with 5 other people who were in holiday mode did not help my resolve to not over-indulge.  Often there were 2 or 3 bottles of wine served with dinner, and 3 people weren't wine drinkers!  At first I was pretty good except for the wine and the yummy French bread.  Then people started going to the boulangerie/patisserie for luscious French pastries.  Then someone started buying ice cream.  

Some of the food/drink I had while there:

tagine (a clay pot for slow cooking) beef, potato, veggies in a sauce made with Moroccan spices

lamb & couscous

Birthday dinner:  a melt in your mouth steak, fries, veggies, bread, profiterole, wine 

cheeses, French breads, pain au chocolate (chocolate croissant), salads, cappuccino, mint tea, spaghetti, a small pizza, prawns, cookies, pastries, yogurt, wine, wine, wine, beer.

One night I had a pastilla de poulet amonde (chicken & almonds in a pastry topped with powdered sugar and cinnamon) which sounds odd but was delicious!  

We did a LOT of walking, all over town, up and down the promenade which must be a few miles long.

Not too worried about getting the weight off.  1200 - 1300 calories a day till it's off.  Joining gym on Monday.

Welcome back Annie, those foods sound SO AMAZING! I would have indulged too - it was your birthday and how often do you get to go to Morocco? And I also know you will get any extra pounds right back off. Can't wait to check out your photo albums!

Good morning ladies!  Just checking in.  Been in Morocco for a week and go home on Tuesday.  Been having a very good time.  Lots of walking along the seaside promenade, lots of good food, lots of wine and weak beer.  Didn't feel like I'd gained any weight at all until today. My belly which is usually small first thing in the morning, is NOT.  We have been super-indulgent.  I was eating fairly healthy with the addition of red wine, then someone decided to go the patisserie/boulangerie and bring back cakes.  !!!

Anyway, we are going swimming tomorrow and I have no swimsuit so today I'm going to look for a bikini as it's the only thing I'll be able to get to fit.  I can wear a tanktop over it.  

Feeling guilty this morning.  I'll be on 1300 calories for a while after we get home.

Since you've been so active, Im pretty sure the weight you've gained is just retained water from all the yummy simple carbs you've treated yourself. Those will melt away pretty quick once you resume your normal food intake!

I cant wait to see more photos and your travel log!!
