Amazed that I managed to lose any weight the way I was eating before I started counting calories.  I was just using my (poor) judgement.  Had almost unlimited fruit.  For my porridge I had been putting in a handful of raisins a good sprinkle of ground almonds and a big squirt of honey.  Now when I don't have any strawberries to put in it I measure 10 g of raisins, 3 g of almonds, and 5 g of sugar.  Pretty much stopped using Splenda as too much seems to make me irritable (anybody else?).   I find it so much easier to count calories using a gram scale instead of the American way using cups and ounces etc.  How did I manage to lose 19 pounds w/o counting?!  I did workout faithfully.  And it took me from early Feb to near the end of August to lose it.  

I hate bread baking day!  I use a bread machine a couple of times a week to make my (thin) husband his bread for toast.  It's made with wholegrain flour, sesame, linseed and sunflower seeds.  It drives me nuts when the smell fills the house!  It's soooooo delicious, but I can't even imagine how many calories are in it with all those seeds.  

Don't seem to have a cold so don't know what was going on yesterday.  I guess I just needed a day of rest.  Must have been allergies causes the runny nose.  

Since I live 10 miles from town and the gym and am retired I've set up my own gym in a spare bedroom. Exercise bike, jump rope, weights, ankle weights, floor mat, ipod with my tae bo routine music.  

Workout:

  • 45 mins Tae Bo and jump rope routine
  • (5) 4 sets of 15 reps with weights
  • floor exercises - leg lifts with ankle weights, 100 abs

Menu for today:

  • Breakfast:  bran flakes, banana, sugar, skimmed milk, tea with skimmed milk - 307 cals
  • Lunch:  porridge (filling!), milk, strawberries, sugar, 1 clementine - 294 cals
  • Dinner:  homemade veggie curry, rice, salad, orange/mango drink (squash) - 480 cals
  • Snack:  yoghurt - 120 cals

TOTAL:  1201

Progress as of today: 19 lbs lost so far, only 10 lbs to go!

I don't use any artificial sweeteners but I do substitute stevia (it's an herb for sweetening that is sold in liquid and powder form here) for sugar sometimes. It's great in my coffee! That homemade bread sounds delicious and I can't imagine the seeds would add that many calories. If you're curious, I use Myfitnesspal.com to log my calories. There a section where you can entire all the ingredients in a recipe and the number of servings to find out how many calories/carbs/etc there are in a serving. I've been shocked to discover some things I thought were bad weren't so bad after all. Have a good one!

I get a very disturbing reaction to aspartame and I don't enjoy the taste of artificial sweeteners AT ALL, so the only time I had splenda (unbeknownst to me--it was a brand-new product and nowhere on the package did it say it had sucralose) was in microwave kettlecorn--it was good until I realized that it was sucralose laden--yechhh. So I read labels even closer after that!

Sounds like a nice little set up you have yourself there:) I use xylitol for sweetening, no taste and made from palm tree bark. Excellent for baking and totally natural. It is purchased under the name Sweetlife - I googled and bought in bulk. Have a good day grannyannie:)

Not sure if you have met Maria yet but she had such a severe reaction to one of the sugar substitutes that her hubby had to rush her to the ER :( So it is not just you :( It is a good thing that you picked up on this... Anyways I hope you have a wonderful evening!!

Think I'm catching a cold.  No energy and constant runny nose that doesn't seem to be allergy-related.  Might get on my exercise bike later but am now just relaxing with a fascinating book and lemon tea.  It's 11 am but I'm already thinking about lunch.  

**The book I'm reading is Eleanor Roosevelt - Vol 1 1884 - 1933 - Blanche Wiesen Cook.  Not the type of book that I would normally pick up to read or to hold my attention for long, but I can't put it down!

Yesterday I ate my lunch at the table and ate mindfully instead of eating at the computer.  Very hard to eat slowly.

Meals plans for today:

  • Breakfast:   porridge, strawberries, sugar, skimmed milk, tea with milk - 289 cals
  • Lunch:  2 eggs fried in low-cal spray, 2 light whole wheat bread, 1 clementine, strawberries - 314 cals
  • Dinner:  salad, rice, veggie curry, orange/mango drink - 480 cals
  • Snack:  yoghurt -   120 cals

TOTAL:  1203 cals

Progress as of today: 19 lbs lost so far, only 10 lbs to go!

hey, great menus so far! I also operate on 1400-1600 kcals, I just add the items as the day progresses. I work in front of the PC so I can do it like this.

I love history titles, too. Especially French history (the Sun King, Richelieu, Mazarin..)! Nowadays I don't read any serious/real, though... only love stories and crime whodunits... mainly because of the pain, I don't have too much patience for anything more sophisticated.

"very hard to eat slowly" --> Definitely! I also have to be very careful with this part. Today my colleague was eating AND talking. She wasn't even in the middle of her soup when I'd already finished mine off. But well, she was talking - and my grandma taught me not to talk while eating. Education basics! :D Just kidding, it'd be better to learn how to eat slower and mindfully - without talking! :P

Welcome to DDs. About the Eleanor Roosevelt book - Eleanor was a very remarkable woman. So much so that her biography had to be written in volumes. I admire her so much my dog is named after her - although we call her Ele. Eleanor used her position as first lady to advance so many many causes all while putting up with a lot in her personal life. Enjoy the read!

Tired of thinking about food!  Friends on Facebook bake goodies then post photos of them.  Drives me nuts!  My poor hubby has to suffer with my grumbling.  I need to remember why I want to lose and what it will feel like when I reach my goal.  

Workout:

  • 45 minutes of Tae bo & jump rope (I chose 3 routines off the old '90's videos of Tae Bo)
  • dumbbells, abs, leg lifts with ankle weights
  • planning on a hike this afternoon if it doesn't rain, some of it is uphill

Food:

  • Breakfast:  porridge, raisins, crushed almonds, skimmed milk, sugar, tea with milk - 294 cal
  • Lunch: 2 medium eggs fried in low-fat spray, 2 pieces of light whole wheat bread, 1 clementine, 1 pear, mango/orange drink - 364 cal
  • Dinner:  homemade veggie curry, basmati rice, salad with fat free dressing, orange/mango drink - 480 cal
  • Snack:  yoghurt (still have the high cal one) - 120 cal

Edited to change the nightime yoghurt snack to a packet of Cadbury chocolate buttons - 75 cal.  More fat, but that's okay, the rest of the day was very low fat!  Total changed to 1203.

Total:  1248

Progress as of today: 19 lbs lost so far, only 10 lbs to go!

I am a bit late in welcoming you grannyannie, so welcome and please forgive me. I used to love Cadbury chocolate buttons, of course I would eat a whole packet. I live in Sydney Australia but was born and rasised in England, come to Australia when I was 12. Nice calorie total. Good going annie:)

I only weigh myself on the 1st of each month so I don't get frustrated.  So I won't weigh myself again until Oct 1st.  It helps a LOT if I have no temptation in the house and since my hubby rarely eats junk food that makes it easier. 

I'm retired so am very flexible with my time.  I try to start my workouts at 10am and by the time I'm done and take a shower it's lunch time. 

I do my weights, leg lifts and abs every other day.  

Todays workout:

45 minutes Tae Bo & jump rope routine (I have a playlist on my ipod of songs specifically chosen for this route - good 1, 2, 3, 4 beats)

60 minutes on exercise bike - I listen to audiobooks, watch tv, and recently since I never watched Friends in order when it was on tv I've bought the entire collection.  I'm watching them in order and it makes the exercise bike, weights and floor exercises much more enjoyable!  

Breakast:  porridge, strawberries, skimmed milk, sugar, tea with milk  - 289

Lunch:  salad with 2 medium boiled eggs, strawberries, 2 clementines - 308

Dinner:  homemade veggie chili, basmati rice, orange mango drink - 430

Evening snack:  yoghurt (grabbed the wrong kind instead of fat free, so I've got 7 more of these 120 cal yoghurts to eat!), lite hot chocolate - 160

Total for the day 1187

My biggest downfall is when we go on a holiday.  I seem to always get the attitude that a holiday is a license to be a total pig.  I usually gain about 8 pounds in a 3 week trip.  And we travel often!  I always promise myself ahead of time that I'll be better.  Too much beer is a biggie since I rarely drink it when I'm dieting.  So I make up for it!  If I switch to wine it's better as I can't drink nearly as much wine.

  • 2 veggie sausages - 160
  • 2 slices whole wheat diet bread - 96
  • mustard - 10
  • strawberries 100 g - 28
  • pineapple 150g - 72
  • DINNER
  • salad - 50
  • veggie chili 300g - 300
  • rice - 110
  • yoghurt - 120
  • squash dilute drink - 20

  Workout:  

  • 45 minutes Tae Bo & jump rope routine
  • 30 minutes exercise bike
  • Dumbbells - 4 sets of 15 each
  • Leg lift routine with ankle weights
  • 100 abs
