your city trip to come - thanks for telling me about it. it sounds AMAZING. it sounds booked with cultural, wonderful things. i would enjoy that sort of trip. and even better that you will be seeing some friends/family along the way.

good idea to buy single serve of the wine - i have recently been enjoying a blush mix of white/red wine. believe it or not, since i don't drink it often, i actually watered it down with seltzer and added stevia to sweeten....lol...when i drink it so i can have a "larger" quantity serving just to sip on. worked out for me. i know most people wouldn't enjoy this, but since i don't really drink sweet things, it's still really tasty to me, especially since i add a little stevia in...just nice to relax and sip on it in the evening.

grannyannie on 10/12/2019:
I enjoy shorter trips all on my own. And museums and shopping are best by myself. I've taken a few trips on my own to places husband didn't want to go. One trip was 4 overnights to a northern island to see ancient archaelogical sites. Had a great time!

grannyannie on 10/12/2019:
My favourite wine is a sweet rose'. But sometimes I add some kind of spritzer to it to lessen the calories.

grannyannie on 10/12/2019:
My very first trip out of the US was all on my own - to Ireland for 2 weeks!

Horn_of_plenty on 10/12/2019:
once i open the wine - it's a red/white mix so i keep in chilled in fridge, will it expire easily after i open it?

the cap is just a regular metal twist on/off one, not a cork. is there expiration date for wine that is opened? or have you noticed anything regarding this? i realize i can google this...but decided to ask you.

grannyannie on 10/12/2019:
Red wine doesn't need refrigeration and it's okay for maybe a week after opening. Rose' and white are only good a few days after opening - after that they taste funny.

Donkey on 10/12/2019:
The single sized bottles are a good idea! I used to drink wine after dinner, to relax, but my problem was that 1 glass soon turned into 2, and then that wasn't enough.

And I like my wine COLD. So I put ice cubes in it.

Horn - I don't think wine expires easily after it's opened because of the alcohol. I believe that you can leave the wine out, after it's opened.

grannyannie on 10/12/2019:
That's exactly why I won't open a big bottle - I'd drink 1/2 of it! Single bottles are perfect. I like rose' and white very cold.

I wouldn't leave rose' or white out.

Note to self:  do NOT buy any more chocolate chip granola bars!

I found them in the gluten free section (which has the best selection of non junk food type snack bars like my quinoa cranberry bars).  I saw the calories were only 140, not much more than the 129 for the cranberry bars, so bought a box. Fortunately only bought one box. They have sugar in them unlike the other bars, so of course, eating one makes me want more.  Had 3 yesterday! There is one left and that will be the last. The cranberry and other unsweetened bars don’t make me want to binge on them at all. Live and learn.

I did stay under 1300 calories though, but am trying to stay under 1100 during the week.

We learn what is best for us to consume, don't we? I can't keep ice cream in the house without overindulging, so I know what you mean.

grannyannie on 10/12/2019:
I have a big weakness for ice cream as well!

Horn_of_plenty on 10/12/2019:
YOU HAVE BEEN SO PRODUCTIVE IS RIGHT! my whole apt can use both a cleaning, dusting, and most imporantly: PURGING of garbage! this weekend is a 3-day weekend, and on Monday i am pretty sure i'm going to take a lot of clothes to the bin that goes to goodwill - all my drawers and closets are packed with things i do not even wear - not sure how it builds up so fast with clothing since in the spring i think i also cleaned them out! LOL.

i also favor certain bars over others - i know what you are talking about, completely. some things i find easier to eat in portions than others.

Horn_of_plenty on 10/12/2019:
products that i'm used to, i'm better at keeping to a small portion.

new foods, where the taste is more unique and different and i'm not used to - harder for me to eat in moderation.

I have some deep cleaning and reorganizing I want to get done before Thailand.  Want to at least get the kitchen (off-white cupboards!) and the living room done. As soon as hubby leaves for Australia I’m going to do the living room and get the carpet shampooed which entails moving around furniture.  I’ve got the double bookcases done which takes a lot of time since I pull everything off - knick knacks, Ugandan souvenirs, all the books, etc and dust them all off.

Menu

B: porridge/berries/almond milk, tea w/soy milk

Deep cleaning going on around here too....and I also take advantage of times when hubby isn't in the house......funny how I used to get it all done with as many as 7 other people in the house but thankful I don't have to anymore. Alone time is precious after retirement....I think Both hubby and I crave it..I'm sure he enjoys his time away from me too......makes our together time even better.

grannyannie on 10/10/2019:
Usually he's in the garage working on his bike or brewing beer or working in the garden, but he's been underfoot in the house lately. Can't garden in the rain.

Donkey on 10/10/2019:
Good plan! Do you rent a carpet cleaner or own your own? It's like having new carpet all over again - ahhh!

grannyannie on 10/10/2019:
I own my own. It's cheaper than renting one especially if you are going to do a lot of rooms.

Maria7 on 10/10/2019:
Wow! You are really getting a lot accomplished! FANTASTIC!

grannyannie on 10/10/2019:
I'll get even more done when hubby is out of the way for a few weeks! I'll need to keep busy so I don't indulge like I usually do when he is gone. Then about 2 weeks after he comes home we leave for Thailand!

Enjoy your day! Is the gym far from where you live?

grannyannie on 10/10/2019:
It's about 10 miles - in the nearest town. When I need groceries I drive, when I don't I take the bus which goes right past our house (free to over 60's).

Horn_of_plenty on 10/09/2019:
the weekend in the city - you booked a place to stay there by yourself? will you see anyone? is it to enjoy different food?

your entries are all so happy and relaxed! :)

and, i just bought some cheddar, shredded, myself so that i can make these biscuits that i bought. they incldue milk/eggs/the mix/and cheddar cheese. they are high fiber - we will see if when i cook them up, they are any good.

grannyannie on 10/10/2019:
Yes, staying in a hotel by myself in the city centre. Going to see special exhibit at one of our fave museums - Linda McCartney photography (hubby wasn't interested). Then in the evening a classical music concert. Booked a Thai restaurant for me for dinner. Next day is Edinburgh museums. That night I'm planning a brewpub for dinner. I am meeting a sis in law on Monday morning for breakfast at a lovely restaurant. Otherwise, on my own.

Let us know how you cheese dish comes out.

Donkey on 10/10/2019:
I can't go into it now, but this post was very inspirational to me!

have a good muscle workout :) on Wednesday, i'm going to get a long workout in for both upper/lower :)

grannyannie on 10/08/2019:
Thanks! I'm focusing on my lower body muscles since I am still being careful of my shoulder. But I figure 3kg dumbbells is much better than nothing! :D

Donkey on 10/08/2019:
You can still get some lovely definition with lighter weights. Something IS better than nothing!

grannyannie on 10/08/2019:
Definitely better than nothing. I was building a lot of muscle before I hurt my shoulder - but being too ambitious is how I hurt it. I'll stick to what I'm doing and will never push too hard again.

Yesterday - Sunday:

B:  porridge

S:  cheddar and some almonds at home

L:  none really except 1/2 pint of beer (10 oz) and later another 1/2 pint of beer and shared a packet of crisps (potato chips) at the cinema before the movie

Saw the movie 'Judy' because husband wanted to. It was an incredible performance, but I just found it too depressing

D: went to restaurant where you choose your meal then go to the bar and give your table number.  Anyway, I should have done the ordering as I suspected husband would mess it up. I asked for veggie burger with cheddar and side salad instead of chips (fries).  He ordered veg burger and salad for me which meant I got the fries and huge quinoa salad!   So he ate most of the fries and we shared the giant salad.  Had 1 pint of beer (20 oz) with dinner.

Today:

We got to the consulate at 9am - opening time and dropped off applications and passports. Then went to post office to get our International Driving Licences.  Then to the optician to get my new glasses - which again had a scratch on them.  So they are reordering them - again.

B: bacon roll, tea w/milk

Went to visit nieces who were in the city for a wedding. They had a big plate full of pastries and I ate a small chocolate eclair, and later 1/2 bagel with cream cheese.

Then we picked up our passports with the new visas int hem and before our train home I had 1/2 pint of beer and shared a packet of crisps.

D: pulled out frozen veg/prawn/tofu curry and made some rice in the rice cooker (for hubby). No rice for me.

My size 14 REI trousers are feeling looser and looser!!

Horn_Of_Plenty on 10/07/2019:
Well, JOKER was a very shocking movie as well. Seems that's what it takes these days to capture the audience!

even though your order got screwy, i find a little indulgence is more satisfying than a too light meal when going out! i know you know what i mean! :)

everything sounds delicious!

grannyannie on 10/08/2019:
Not tempted to see Joker. Heard it's ultra violent! I see enough of that when I watch US news.

Actually a veggie burger with cheddar and side salad is perfect and very filling. So is a pint of beer! LOL. The only problem I have with this chain restaurant is their chips (fries) are not good, so they aren't really tempting unless I'm starving!

Horn_of_plenty on 10/08/2019:
yes, Joker is very VIOLENT and also very upsetting - it's a lot about mental health issues too.

Donkey on 10/08/2019:
Judy is another movie I want to see (in addition to The Joker). I figured that Judy would be rather difficult to watch...

grannyannie - Sunday Oct 06, 2019

Heading into the city today to spend the night.  We need to be at the Thai Consulate at 9am Monday morning. Dropping off our annual tourist visa applications.  We pick them up later that day at 2pm. Also need to get our international driving licences.

Going to a restaurant that lists calories on the menu. Will TRY to just have a gin and diet tonic. Maybe 1 beer.

My first diet was just after I turned 40. I did not own a scale and had no access to one. I had been weighed at a doctors office months before and I was 155, but I had gained after that so no idea what the starting weight was. This was well before the internet so I did no research. Bought 2 workout videos, worked out 6 nights a week, counted calories and fat, ate horribly processed food like Lean Cuisine for dinner, etc. Anyway, by the time I was able to weigh myself about 4 months later, I was 122 lbs, later I was 120. Sizes at the time (1992) were different from now - I went from a size 14 (nearly 16) to a size 8.  About a year later I was 130 but still thin - I had built up muscle by then but also gained some.

Menu

B: porridge/berries/almond milk, tea w/soy milk

S: coconut/almond milk cappuccino, quinoa & cranberry bar

L: 6 veg salad w/cheddar

D: Restaurant - probably a veggie burger and salad

BearCountryGG on 10/06/2019:
Exactly...that was how we did it and it worked so well.

Grannyannie on 10/06/2019:
It did work well Not the healthiest of diets.

Horn_of_plenty on 10/06/2019:
I feel that losing weight the first time is the easiest.

Also, first time i lost weight, i also ate the worst i ever have. i had hardly any fat in my diet and my hair looked so dry.

Grannyannie on 10/06/2019:
It was easy and I was highly motivated. And I was just a kid of 40. ;)

BearCountryGG on 10/06/2019:
Annie...we grew up around the same time I think...Do you remember the traditional diet plate at dime store counters? A lettuce leaf, a scoop of cottage cheese and half of a canned peach?? I remember that well...it is what my Mom went to every time she wanted to lose a little weight...and actually...it was genius...veg, protein, calcium, and fruit in a sweetened syrup that finished off the plate with what felt like dessert....so satisfying and so simple. I wish life was that simple now.

Grannyannie on 10/06/2019:
Yes I remember! I will be 68 in Feb so we are nearly same age.

Donkey on 10/06/2019:
^^ I love seeing diet meal plans from old magazines and books, LOL. Some of that stuff is absolutely gross - and funny at the same time.

Grannyannie on 10/07/2019:
I know! And the misinformation back then!

Donkey on 10/06/2019:
It never would have occurred to me that you would need a special driver's license while in Thailand. If you were only staying for a week and renting a car, would you still need a special license? I guess, right?

Have fun at the hotel, and I hope that your paperwork goes smoothly tomorrow. EXCITING!!!

Grannyannie on 10/07/2019:
Some countries require an International driving license. Thailand is one. We just go to the main post office with our own licence, fill in form and give them passport sized photo to glue into a wee booklet.

Application for visa is easy. They put the visa right into our passport. It's only needed if you stay more than 30 days. We have to apply for extension after 60 days. But it's also easy.

legcramps on 10/07/2019:
Sounds like a very exciting week :)

Scale:  same as yesterday.  That’s it! Not getting on the scale again until the day we leave for Thailand in 8 weeks.  I will try on my trousers every couple of weeks to gage my losses.

Menu

B: porridge/berries/almond milk, tea w/soy milk

D: veg/prawn/tofu stir fry, diet tonic w/fresh lime and lemon

thigh/bum exercises with ankle weights

Donkey on 10/05/2019:
Yes, if you find the scale not being very friendly and motivational, best to step away. Think of the delightful surprise when you weigh in before you embark!

grannyannie on 10/05/2019:
Hope that works. Trying on trousers will be a good guide. Then I can get on the scale when I know it will say what I want.

BearCountryGG on 10/05/2019:
I avoid the scale , unfortunately it has too much power over me and has the apparent ability to rule my day in a not so nice way,.....i prefer going by how my clothes fit.

grannyannie on 10/05/2019:
Good idea.

It’s gotten cold here. So I’m ready for Thailand. We leave 8 weeks from tomorrow.

My belly feels smaller so got on scale this morning even though Saturday is weighing day.  I was 160 last Saturday, but might have gained over the wedding weekend. Goal for tomorrow is 158 but scale today said 159.2.

Menu

B: porridge/berries/almond milk, tea w/soy milk

S: black coffee & quinoa cranberry bar at gym cafe after workout

S: coconut/almond milk cappuccino

L: 6 veg salad w/chicken breast and cheddar

D: veg/prawn/tofu stir fry, diet tonic w/fresh lime and lemon

Gym:

treadmill - (intervals uphill and speed) - 10 mins

elliptical - 10 mins

rowing machine - 10 mins

recumbent bike -  15 mins

Leg press (20kg) - 3 sets of 10

Progress as of today: 7 lbs lost so far, only 15 lbs to go!

Donkey on 10/04/2019:
Nice to see a lower number, isn't it? Whatever you're doing, it's working.

I'm glad you're already anticipating Thailand!

grannyannie on 10/04/2019:
I just wish it would come off faster! I'll rely more on how my smaller trousers fit than what the scale says.

legcramps on 10/04/2019:
That darn scale, huh?

grannyannie on 10/04/2019:
Yep. I really should try to stick to trying on trousers instead.

BearCountryGG on 10/04/2019:
I avoid the scale and go by clothes fitting it does take the sting out of those inevitable times the scales are up.

grannyannie on 10/04/2019:
True. Hard habit to break.

Horn_Of_Plenty on 10/04/2019:
you are doing great with your weightloss. i have been sorta watching myself too, as my exercise has been far lighter the past few weeks as i recover with my legs i don't want to gain weight.

i also want to try to remain a lighter weight thru Winter into next summer, although i realize that weight does have to go up and down for most people, even if only slightly.
