Weight: 147.2

Was gone for my birthday Thursday and Friday.  Had a good time.  Too many calories, of course.

Grocery shopping this morning, tidying up and helping hubby who is now tiling the bathroom floor.  Stuff all over the floor of my 'gym' so can't do my muscle work.

Menu:

  • B:  porridge/dried fruit/cinnamon/almond milk
  • L:  2 low fat cheddar in a whole wheat tortilla, yogurt, grapes, strawberries
  • D:  veg/lentil/rice soup, bread, salad
  • S:  Non-alcohol beer, almonds
  • tea w/soy milk, herbal teas, flavoured water, water, coffee w/almond milk

Cals:  1331

Progress as of today: 19.8 lbs lost so far, only 15.2 lbs to go!

Tomorrow we will go into the city and spend the night.  Going to the cinema, a bit of shopping, maybe a museum.

Thanks! I finally talked husband into it! It's the last room in the house to get redecorated. All are done. (the house is 88 years old).

Sorry to hear you're coughing again, I hope it clears out for good very soon!

grannyannie on 02/23/2015:
Thanks! It's just post nasal drip that makes me cough. Allergies can contribute to it as well. I'm going to have to break down and buy some expectorant cough syrup even though it upsets my stomach.

Hope you will be over this soon. Take care.

Good workout at the gym.  Still a bit of a struggle on the spin bike, but then I went for well over two months without doing such an intense workout.  I was using treadmill/elliptical/bike at the gym in Thailand for cardio.  Nothing beats a spin bike for intensity! Hoping I didn't overdo it as I'm still coughing and my throat is sore off and on (hopefully from the coughing, not an infection).

I've been drinking Schweppes Elderflower tonic water and it has almost no calories.  I recently discovered I like gin and tonic, so bought a small bottle today. The calories for one shot are 61.

Workout at gym:

  • 30 mins spin bike
  • 10 mins rowing machine
  • 4 x 12 on 4 resistance machines
Menu:
  • B:  porridge/dried fruit/cinnamon/almond milk
  • L:  whole wheat tortilla w/low fat cheddar, yogurt, grapes, clementine
  • D:  veg curry & basmati rice, salad w/slivered almonds and walnut pieces
  • tea w/soy milk, herbal teas, flavoured water, water, coffee w/almond milk, 1 glass gin and tonic
Cals:  1316

Progress as of today: 19.4 lbs lost so far, only 15.6 lbs to go!

Umpqua on 02/20/2015:
That tonic water sounds interesting. We drink a ton of zero-calorie vitamin water here. It's sweetened with stevia, comes in a bunch of flavors and is a nice alternate to regular water. It also mixes well with tequila as a replacement for high-cal margaritas, which I love :) Cheers and enjoy your gin and tonic!

grannyannie on 02/20/2015:
It's delicious. Unfortunately, it's sweetened with aspartame. :/

Love margaritas. Had quite a few different cocktails in Thailand. Something about sitting outdoors having dinner calls for a fruity cocktail, lots of ice and a cute wee umbrella!

Another good reason to buy a food scale (with grams) is nuts. I measure out walnuts and almond slivers on my scale at 10g total. 63 calories. Hard to be so accurate with a tablespoon or cup.

thinnside40 on 02/20/2015:
Sounds good!

Busy morning!  Went to the dentist expecting to get a cleaning but I was only booked for a checkup. Got some xrays to check on all the crowns I've got and dentist said I'm taking good care of them, no decay around them.  Need to go back for a good scraping - lots of tea and coffee stains on my bottom teeth.  Also I chipped a lower front tooth last summer and it looks like it a prime site for getting a cavity so that's going to be filled as well. So glad I've got an NHS dentist - very low price.

Then I got my hair cut and am very pleased with it.  Then a big grocery shopping.  All healthy, no tempting snacks.

Menu:

  • B:  porridge/dried fruit/cinnamon/almond milk
  • L:  whole wheat tortilla w/low fat cheddar, strawberries & grapes, yogurt
  • D:  leftover chickpea curry & basmati rice, salad w/toasted almond slivers
  • tea w/soy milk, herbal teas, flavoured water, water, coffee w/almond milk, can of non-alcohol beer

I'm excited as I've got another photo on a journal cover - my third.  No pay.  Just my name as credit and that's fine.  It's from Brugge, Belgium last summer.

Umpqua on 02/19/2015:
Another gorgeous photo and so cool you're on another journal cover. Is that a canal running right up to the homes? Good news at the dentist is good news all around :)

grannyannie on 02/19/2015:
There are canals all around Brugge. You can take boat trips which are lovely. I love Brugge!

I spent a lot of time in dentists chairs years ago, have all my teeth if you count crowns as my own teeth. And I'd like to keep it that way! :)

puddles on 02/19/2015:
Do not like the dentist chair. Belgium is absolutely beautiful enjoyed my trip there also. Congrats on the mention and have a great day.

grannyannie on 02/19/2015:
I'm not fond of the dentist either, but at least it's just cleaning. Although this one is so through with the scraping, etc... ouch.

Had to buy a new food scale today.  I've worn out the button on the other one as I have to push it 3 or 4 times to zero it out.  Well, it was about 10 years old....

Progress as of today: 19.4 lbs lost so far, only 15.6 lbs to go!

Umpqua on 02/18/2015:
Yay for getting back to the gym. I'm thinking of getting a food scale for the bulk items we get through our co-op. I don't usually weigh out foods for myself but it would come in handy for measuring ingredients occasionally. The main thing is we often split 25 or 50 lb bags of rice, flour etc. from the co-op and the scale would be handy for dividing things up. Let me know if you have recommendations :)

grannyannie on 02/18/2015:
Digital is best. These have the option of grams/kg or lbs and goes up to 5kg but there are bigger ones. I never used one before moving here but everything here is calories per 100 grams and recipes are metric as well. So my oats for porridge are weighed in grams, nuts, dried fruit, my flour for baking, fruit, etc. It seems to be much more accurate than measuring things by cup (like grapes), or guessing what 'medium' sized means.

Umpqua on 02/18/2015:
Thanks Annie. I occasionally make recipes that have metric measurements so it would be useful for conversions. I think a regular sized one would work fine, we typically portion out bulk stuff into gallon ziplock bags and measure by 5 or 7 lbs. So something that goes up to 10 lbs would probably work. I'll have to start researching my options!

grannyannie on 02/18/2015:
Mines 5kg so is 12+lbs. But they probably come in 10lb size over there.

puddles on 02/18/2015:
Personally I have never used a scale but I can understand if you get stuff in bulk. The instruction on most of the stuff I use is on the box and usually gives cup size or tablespoon size and I figure if I am off it is not by too much. Wishing you a great day.

grannyannie on 02/18/2015:
In the UK measurements are all metric and calories are given as per 100g. So my porridge instructions say 40g plus 250ml liquid. No other way to measure.

thinnside40 on 02/18/2015:
Glad your feeling better :)

Good morning!  About 80-90% well.

Didn't do my dumbbells yesterday as I got lazy.  So did them today as well as lower body.  I didn't want to overdo so did less of everything. Gym tomorrow.

The muesli kept calling my name and I didn't want to be rude   I just had to throw the rest of it in the bin.

A normal workout is 4 sets of everything, and I'm sure I'll be back to that next week.

Workout at home (upper):

  • dumbbells - 3 sets of 12 - 11 routines
  • push ups - 3 x 12
  • triceps dips - 3 x 12

Workout at home (lower):

  • side dips w/dumbbell - 2 x 10
  • squats with dumbbells - 2 x 10
  • lunges w/dumbbells using step - 2 x 10
  • lunges w/dumbbells - 2 x 10
  • side lunges w/dumbbells using step - 2 x 10
  • thighs/glutes with ankle weights - 3 x 12 - 3 routines (using the 2.5 lb ones instead of 2kg and will work my way back)
  • planks - full x 3
  • abs-4 routines x 3
  • bridge (for glutes, core, thighs) - 9 x 10 seconds
  • calf lifts w/dumbbell - 2 x 10

Menu:

  • B:  porridge/dried fruit/cinnamon/almond milk
  • L:  2 whole grain toast w/hummous, yogurt, large orange
  • D:  chickpea and cauliflower curry & basmati rice, salad
  • tea w/soy milk, herbal teas, flavoured water, water, coffee w/almond milk

Cals:  1378

Progress as of today: 19.4 lbs lost so far, only 15.6 lbs to go!

Umpqua on 02/17/2015:
Yay for feeling better and getting back to a normal routine! I didn't realize muesli was so high in calories - best to throw it out if it's a temptation.

grannyannie on 02/17/2015:
Thanks! Anxious to be back to 100%. The muesli I bought had dried fruit, hazelnuts, almonds, coconut, really delicious! And addictive. A small serving is 190 calories.

puddles on 02/17/2015:
I have often put things in the garbage bin before I could do myself anymore arm. Congrats on doing that. Your exercise is wonderful. Have a great day.

grannyannie on 02/17/2015:
Thanks. I baked chocolate chip brownies once to take to someone's house for a gift, and then couldn't visit. I ate a few and had to dump the rest. Brownies are a serious weakness of mine.

thinnside40 on 02/17/2015:
I just read something that was kinda funny, but also wise. "If you say "no" once in the store and don't bring it home. You'll not have to keep saying "no" if you would of bought it and took it home" :)

grannyannie on 02/17/2015:
That's what normally happens here - don't buy it, can't eat it. And husband isn't a junk or sugar eater so that helps a lot.

biscottibody59 on 02/17/2015:
Sad to throw it away, but sometimes it must be done--I'm sure it's not sitting in the bin crying:-) My weakness is wheat chex and I only buy it occasionally.

Glad you're finally recovering from the cold, etc!

Oh, and keep up the good work:-)

grannyannie on 02/18/2015:
Hiya Biscotti! There wasn't really that much left when I dumped it. It had to go!!

Feeling about the same as yesterday but do have some energy. Cleaned the bathrooms, doing some organising with husband's massive collection of t-shirts!  And will do some of my upper body dumbbell routines. Don't know if I'll do my usual amount.

Stuck to menu yesterday although too many calories, except that I forgot about the popsicles I had and had the last two.  So cooling on my throat.

Menu:

  • B:  muesli w/almond milk, toast, tea w/o soy milk
  • S:  yogurt
  • L:  2 whole grain toast w/hummous, orange, flavoured water

Thanks for your good wishes!

Seemed like I coughed all night on Friday but last night was much, much better.  I've just been doing the minimum housework - keeping the kitchen clean, doing laundry, and keeping things tidy.  So today I dusted and hoovered the living room, washed the kitchen floor, and cleaned up the laundry room.  That was enough.  Bathrooms and bedrooms tomorrow.

I hope to get to the gym on Wednesday.  Will try doing my upper body strength workout tomorrow at home.

Menu which I intended to stick to but husband brought me a bottle of ale for a treat.

  • B:  muesli, banana, toast, soy milk, tea w/milk
  • L:  2 whole grain toast w/hummous, yogurt, grapes, flavoured water
  • D:  Veggie red curry & rice with asparagus, salad, flavoured water
  • Lots of water, herbal teas, latte w/almond milk

Calories:  1511    + One bottle of ale - calories unknown

I've been missing the muesli I ate every morning in Thailand, so I stupidly bought some while buyiing groceries last week.  It is soooo good but soooo high in calories.  I measured out a serving size which is 45g and is a tiny amount.  I probably ate 4 times that amount in Thailand almost every morning.  So it wasn't just the beer, cocktails, and ice cream that put the weight on me! I've added my gram scale to the packing list for next trip to Thailand.

Progress as of today: 19.4 lbs lost so far, only 15.6 lbs to go!

nenak on 02/15/2015:

grannyannie on 02/16/2015:
Same here - cereal is a tempting snack. I eat porridge for breakfast, and hubby eats toast. But hot porridge wasn't appealing in Thailand where it was 80 degrees by breakfast.

thinnside40 on 02/15/2015:
Good. On the road of getting better :)

grannyannie on 02/16/2015:
Very very slowly but heading in the right direction. :)
