Yet another gloomy day.  Does not help my mood.

Had a couple of gin and tonics last night.

Might do muscle work today.

Menu:

  • B:  porridge w/blueberries, 2 tea w/soy milk
  • S:  coffee with coconut/almond milk, quinoa bar
  • L:  egg salad sandwich, pack of baked crisps
  • D:  Massaman curry, tonic with slices of lime
  • S:  1 pack popcorn

Total: about 1400

I've been doing jigsaw puzzles as a distraction for months now.  I'm now on the 9th one. So far 3 have been 1,000 pieces and the rest have been 500.  Here is one of them:  travel guides.

Progress as of today: 2.8 lbs lost so far, only 21.8 lbs to go!

Donkey on 07/25/2020:
If we had gloomy weather, it would be a difficult weekend. Well... actually, it is brutally hot and humid here this weekend, so while the sunlight IS helpful, it's still impossible outside.

When the weather turns colder, my husband and I do puzzles. It's one of the few things we can do together that we enjoy. I started a puzzle at the beginning of summer, and haven't gone back to it since June. I'll start again, I think once the weather turns. It's a 1000 piece puzzle, which ain't easy! I love the one you've pictured above!

grannyannie on 07/25/2020:
Jigsaw puzzles don't appeal to husband at all. And we don't use the dining room table so it's always covered in a puzzle.

I feel so much better when we have sunshine and can do garden gatherings with friends.

bearcountrygg on 07/25/2020:
Nice puzzle...My Mom and I did puzzles for the 7 years that I took care of her...it was a great passtime.

grannyannie on 07/26/2020:
I hadn't done any in decades but found them nice during lockdown.

Horn_of_plenty on 07/25/2020:
great job on the puzzle, frame it!

grannyannie on 07/26/2020:
My sister has a friend who frames hers and hangs them all over the house. I have photos all over our walls. I take a photo of each puzzler after I finish it, then take it apart and put it back in the box.

1,000 cals was fine for a couple of weeks but I'm finding it too restrictive now even with high cal days in between. Need to come up with new plan.  Maybe 1200 cals most days and then one high cal day plus a flexible Sunday.

Doing 1200 today - a second mug of tea with soy milk, more coconut/almond milk in my coffee, and a quinoa bar.

Menu:

  • B:  porridge w/blueberries, 2 tea w/soy milk
  • S:  coffee with coconut/almond milk, quinoa bar
  • L:  salad w/hummus (getting bored with hummus so will use up this container & not buy more)
  • D:  Massaman curry, tonic with slices of lime
  • S:  1 pack popcorn

Total: just over 1200

Cardio - doing a low impact aerobic video and will also do jump rope and some jumping jacks

Wish I was here!  This was 4 1/2 years ago. We spend winters in Thailand and have done since 2014.  Came back March 1st this year.  No idea if we can go this coming winter.

Progress as of today: 2.8 lbs lost so far, only 21.8 lbs to go!

Donkey on 07/24/2020:
Yes, if you find 1000 to be too low, do increase your uptake a bit. You'll know when you're at the right point for "low" days and then you can adjust for your higher days. The objective is to avoid going hog wild.

Well done!

grannyannie on 07/24/2020:
When I went on a diet at age 40 I was at 1200 calories/day and worked out 6 nights a week after work. Found myself getting light-headed often, so changed to 1500 a day. Worked great! But then I was just a kid then :D

bearcountrygg on 07/24/2020:
Great pic.......!!!! Yes...I'm glad you are going up in cals.....need to stay healthy while doing this!!

grannyannie on 07/24/2020:
I feel healthy - certainly get enough veg and protein. But a couple hundred more calories can make a big difference.

Horn_of_plenty on 07/24/2020:
who knows, you may do even better when you push the lower cal days up a hair with the calories. i used to do a lot of 1400-1500 days once when i was doing low cal eating, and even that got too restrictive after too many days of it...!

you will get back to where you were. can you even go back in your entries to see what you were eating? maybe you are enjoying more indulgences now than then...also you were in thailand in the nice, hot weather. probably was easier to move around more, go out more, exercise more then!

even myself, i am finding it hard to push myself to go out much (some of the responsibility for that is the classes i am taking that are keeping me inside)...but also because of the mask issues, etc, the virus...i just find it pretty hard to be as active as i used to be. for instance, if there were no virus, and i was home this long (hopefully that never happens!), i'd have joined a gym and started (possibly) biking there...i used to try much harder to increase cardio but took a back step this year!

are you still doing as much cardio?

maybe when you are in thailand you eat better / less calories?

grannyannie on 07/24/2020:
I always gain in Thailand, and gained even more this winter. It's actually too hot to exercise there except early morning. I'm very indulgent in Thailand - beer, ice cream etc.

I have been working out 6 days a week but not like when I used to go to the gym. Much more intense at the gym.

Being stuck at home as nice as it is with the scenery etc is depressing as well as grieving. Kinda sucks out my energy.

And at 68 I've gained and lost too many times, so it gets harder each time.

Horn_of_plenty on 07/24/2020:
i totally agree with Donkey. that's my method too. i eat in a way where each day doesn't feel like a stressor in terms of eating - where i can help myself not to binge.

if i start feeling in a binge mode or something, it's because i have (usually) been too restrictive.

again, this is my own experience!

grannyannie on 07/24/2020:
Agree. It's more tempting to binge when I've been too restrictive.

Higher calories day.  The weather has been sh*t here for too long.  Supposed to be nice tomorrow - finally.  Might power walk. I've ordered the Samsung version of a fitbit and should get it early next week. Husband has had one for months.

RE: discussion of REI zip off trousers - I like the secure pockets that you can zip and/or velcro.  They are great for many reasons including being a tourist in big city - anti pickpocket. Also if you get rained on they dry very fast. And if it get too hot, just zip off the legs.

Menu:

  • B:  porridge w/raspberries, tea w/soy milk
  • S:  coffee with coconut milk, quinoa bar
  • L:  2 fried eggs, polenta, 1 sausage
  • D:  Massaman curry (chicken, veg, potatoes, sauces), tonic with slices of lime
  • S:  1 pack popcorn

Total: about 1380

Workout:

  • Upper body with wrist weights, and a few with dumbbells but not for shoulder
  • 2 sets x 10 lower body with wrist weights (squats, lunges, calf lifts)
  • 2-3 sets x 10 bum and thighs with ankle weights
  • 2 sets abs, planks, push ups
  • jump rope 3 x 20 Did yesterday with cardio

This is the polenta I eat with fried eggs on top.  I buy a block of it then slice it. This is 150g and I fry them in 2 tsp of oil till brown.  200 calories. Yum.  Then 2 eggs fried in butter and 1 cumberland sausage is 300 more. Only for higher calorie days, of course.

Progress as of today: 2.8 lbs lost so far, only 21.8 lbs to go!

bearcountrygg on 07/24/2020:
My grandma made fried cornmeal a lot when I was a kid....Grandpa loved it maple syrup.......It's a very low cost meal...and great for when it's time to go shopping......good memories with that pic of yours.

Horn_of_plenty on 07/24/2020:
we have polenta in our stores too...i have yet to buy or cook it! you should show us a finished project of the "high cal" meal....whenever you get around to a "high cal" day! hahaha

Got ambitious yesterday.  After my muscle workout I cleaned the main bathroom, dusted and hoovered the living/dining room.  Trimmed the weeping fig tree that was threatening to take over the dining area.

After my hard work I wanted a beer like hubby was having after he finished working on garage roof - however, I opted for a small gin and tonic with lime instead of the 2 clementines.  Same calories!  And no carbs like beer has.

Back to 1,000 cals today.  MWF seems to be a good plan for me.  I’ve been wearing my size 14 REI trousers when I go shopping (my biggest pair), and tried on my size 12’s and they just about fit - only a wee bit snug in the butt.  My goal is for my size 10 REI’s to fit COMFORTABLY.  I have one pair of size 8’s but I’ll be happy with the 10’s.  I always buy 3 or 4 more pair of REI zip off leg trousers when we visit the US. But of course no trip over this summer and last summer because all of my family came here.

Menu:

  • B:  porridge w/raspberries, tea w/soy milk
  • S:  coffee with coconut milk
  • L:  salad with hummus and cheddar
  • D:  whatever curry or Thai dish hubby is making, tonic with slices of lime
  • S:  1 pack popcorn

Total: about 1,000

Cardio:  either step aerobics or following a video online.

Browsing through my albums. Australia 2009.

Progress as of today: 2.8 lbs lost so far, only 21.8 lbs to go!

thinkpositive on 07/22/2020:
Great plan- sounds like you are having success! I may try your idea of gin & tonic. I don’t think I can handle 1000 calories though. I have trouble sleeping with low calories. Beautiful photo!

grannyannie on 07/22/2020:
Slowly but surely. 1,000 is tough but knowing I can have more the next day helps. I never end up saving the popcorn for nighttime snack - have it mid afternoon.

grannyannie on 07/22/2020:
That was a great trip to Australia - got lots of in-laws there. We were booked to go this November but of course that had to be cancelled. :(

Donkey on 07/22/2020:
That is quite ambitious! You did efl to accomplish so many tasks.

How nice that you have had the opportunity to travel so much. You will have more travels ahead, once this plague is contained and controlled.

Grannyannie on 07/22/2020:
So far this year we came back from a winter in Thailand as usual, but cancelled trip to London, then cancelled summer trip to Michigan, then cancelled Nov trip to Australia. Up in the air about whether we can spend winter in Thailand. Spring trip to US for family?

Horn_of_plenty on 07/22/2020:
so the tree...the fig tree is indoors?

those REI's sound really comfortable. my dad i know has a pair. i never owned a pair but perhaps if i was into hiking i'd buy them! and they sound perfect for you and all your outdoor photos.

that's a great photo of you :) thanks for sharing! you look very happy and healthy!

grannyannie on 07/22/2020:
It's a weeping fig and wouldn't survive outdoors. I got it as small plant years ago and grows too fast.

Love REI zip offs with loads of pockets. Mine zip off just above the knee and are great shorts. Secure pockets too.

bearcountrygg on 07/22/2020:
Great pic!!

grannyannie on 07/23/2020:
Thanks. Was hoping I'd be there again in Nov. But....sigh.

grannyannie on 07/21/2020:
Thanks. Photo was 5 years ago so I was likely 20 lbs lighter.

Donkey on 07/21/2020:
And I like your menu and workout today!

grannyannie on 07/21/2020:
Was a good workout! And I won't get hungry mid afternoon.

Horn_of_plenty on 07/21/2020:
Looking great in your 5yr old photo!

Good plan to get to the supermarket early so you can have it basically all to yourself!

grannyannie on 07/21/2020:
I used to line up to get in at 7 - but too crowded. Then I tried 7:30, still too many. So I've found arriving at 7:15 is perfect!

bearcountrygg on 07/21/2020:
I get to the store early too......Great pic of you Annie!!!!

Love this photo of you and what a beautiful place!!! Also I enjoyed looking at the pub photo yesterday...that is really pretty with the water behind it. Are you enjoying your electric bike?

grannyannie on 07/21/2020:
Love my bike. Had it for 5 years now. Lots of hills here which is the reason we got electric.

grannyannie - Sunday Jul 19, 2020
(Healthy eating, exercise)
Weight: 166.8

New week.  MWF 1000 calories, Tu Th Sa 1400.  Workouts M to Sat.  Sunday is flexible and I can have alcohol.

Not sure what we are doing today.  We've got sunshine and also dark clouds.  One couple is having a sister visiting, and the other couple is working on their greenhouse to turn it into a place to sit outside in the rain.

If it looks like we can get out and not get wet, we might ride our bikes 'around the block' - 20 miles.  Pubs and restaurants are now open but distancing is down to 1 metre (not far enough for me!).  There is a lovely pub where you can sit outside a great place to stop for a beer on a bike ride.

Edit:  it is raining.  And husband says he won't go to the pub if one of us has to go inside to order drinks.

Scotland is going really well with Covid but we still need to be careful. I disagree with how much they opening things up.  Looks at Victoria in Australia!  And other places.

This is the pub - down our road 8 miles. 17th century with some sections from 16th.

Menu:

  • B:  porridge with blueberries, tea w/soy
  • S:  coffee and quinoa bar
  • L:  2 fried eggs, polenta, 1 sausage
  • S:  beer and maybe crisps
  • D:  veg and chicken curry
  • S:  mixed nuts - 20 g

Progress as of today: 2.8 lbs lost so far, only 21.8 lbs to go!

happy-1 on 07/19/2020:
I love the photos!!! A green house sounds very nice.

grannyannie on 07/19/2020:
Yes, the greenhouse does sound nice! Hope it doesn't take them too long to finish.

Horn_of_plenty on 07/19/2020:
is the pub rebuilt or built to look exactly as it had way back when!? it's beautiful! too nice to be a pub!

grannyannie on 07/19/2020:
No, the pub is as it was. I think most is 18th century with parts inside from 17th and 16th. It's a place people used to stop in their carriages and call/whistle for a ferry to take them across the loch. That's why it's call Whistlefield.

Donkey on 07/19/2020:
I don't comment on your photos much, I am really enjoying them. Thank you for sharing!

Sorry to hear that your gathering isn't going to take place, but with the rain, well... maybe it just wasn't meant to be this weekend.

grannyannie on 07/19/2020:
Maybe later this week we can visit our friends.

grannyannie - Saturday Jul 18, 2020
(Healthy eating, exercise)
Weight: 166.8

Don't know if the weather will cooperate tomorrow for a garden gathering with friends, but it will be a higher calorie day and a non-workout day.

Menu:

  • B:  porridge with extra raspberries and blueberries, tea w/soy
  • S:  coffee with coconut milk
  • L:  salad with hummus and cheddar
  • D:  whatever curry or Thai food husband makes
  • S:  1 pack popcorn

Total:  just over 1,000 calories

Workout:

  • Upper body with wrist weights
  • 2 sets x 10 lower body with wrist weights (squats, lunges, calf lifts)
  • 2-3 sets x 10 bum and thighs with ankle weights
  • 2 sets abs, planks, push ups
  • jump rope 3 x 20

Another garden photo:

Progress as of today: 2.8 lbs lost so far, only 21.8 lbs to go!

Thinkpositive on 07/18/2020:
Hope your garden party works out. So pretty.

grannyannie on 07/18/2020:
Doesn't look hopeful weatherwise. Oh well.

Donkey on 07/18/2020:
Oh I hope you can have your party!

That's interesting that you have your higher calorie days on your rest days. I rather like that, being a "refuel" situation.

Is it more painful (ha ha) to eat less on days that you eat less? This question is more for my benefit than a commentary. I'm really focusing more on calorie intake lately. (or trying to, anyways...)

grannyannie on 07/18/2020:
Sunday is my only non-workout day now - I can have alcohol and extra calories. But starting tomorrow it's going to be MWF 1,000 cals and 1300-1400 on the other days. It's actually getting easier to have 1,000 calories. I think juggling is the key. Maybe you could try 2 days a week very low cal?

Horn_of_plenty on 07/18/2020:
what a great place to live with such space for walking and biking!

uh, i'm a little jealous of all these thai food you are eating!!! i may do some thai takeout next week! actually make that, i WILL do takeout next week and it will be thai!

grannyannie on 07/18/2020:
There is loads of space here! Lots of places to walk or cycle.

We used to eat a lot of Indian curries or veggie chilis and hubby just used different veggies or sauces. But after several years going to Thailand in winter he decided going 9 months without Thai food was too long. So he started watching a Thai cooking show on Youtube. I'm not a creative cook at all so I'm very happy he likes to cook!

grannyannie on 07/18/2020:
If you want to get adventurous check out this woman's Thai cooking show. She's great! https://hot-thai-kitchen.com/

Horn_of_plenty on 07/18/2020:
thanks for the info on the show!

grannyannie on 07/19/2020:
It's really good and she also puts recipes online. She is Thai but now lives in Canada.

happy-1 on 07/18/2020:

Thanks!

grannyannie - Friday Jul 17, 2020
(Healthy eating, exercise)
Weight: 166.8

Friends dropped by yesterday (unexpected) just before dinner, so brought out the wine and crisps. So calories were definitely more than 1400.

Menu:

  • B:  porridge w/raspberries, tea w/soy milk
  • S:  coffee with coconut milk
  • L:  salad with hummus and cheddar
  • D:  veggie curry, tonic with slices of lime
  • S:  1 pack salted popcorn

Total: about 1,000 Edit: also had a quinoa bar so 1,137 cals

Step aerobics 30 minutes.  Tried some youtube videos - tried the intermediate which had a lot of jumping and just wore me out after 10 minutes. So went to the beginner one which was much easier to keep up with but still a very good workout. So I did at least 30 minutes overall.

One of the many photos of flowers in our garden:

Progress as of today: 2.8 lbs lost so far, only 21.8 lbs to go!

Donkey on 07/17/2020:
Oh you definitely made the right choice to enjoy wine with friends! Frankly, it's not worth being a skinny stick-in-the-mud. That is to say, it would be fine not to drink the wine, too, but do enjoy time with your friends. And enjoying wine together... why not?

I'll tell you a secret. Although I am sober (abstinent), I've often fantasized about coming home from work, and enjoying a glass of wine with my husband BEFORE dinner -- sitting outside, relaxing, etc.

However, because daughter usually comes home for dinner at 5:15p, it's all rush rush rush, so that we can eat with her. When I stay late at work, I don't get to see her at all for that day.

Hopefully, husband and I will have time to drink wine, in the future, probably sooner than I think!

grannyannie on 07/17/2020:
My friend likes rose' and so do I so I've always got a good stash. Her husband likes red so I keep that around too. Usually it's so I'm prepared for a weekend garden party at their house. A lot of times I drink beer or wine because of association - like cold beer at the beach in Thailand, wine with friends, or just sitting out on our patio where I'll have either one. Airplanes - gin and tonic!

bearcountrygg on 07/17/2020:
I love irises....I really don't see them much anymore...we used to grow them......

grannyannie on 07/17/2020:
We have a lot of irises. We have a lot of everything. Every colour and dozens of species. Thanks to hubby.

legcramps on 07/17/2020:
Sounds like it was a good day :)

I am not much for wine, but I do have a taste for ale and really enjoy trying new flavors!

grannyannie on 07/17/2020:
If I could only have one type of alcohol it would be beer - from lager to porter. But I do like rose' which I really got a taste for when we became friends with a couple of in our village.

Lots of good Michigan breweries now and one of my favourites is Two Hearted Ale. So we're never short of good beer when we visit!

Horn_of_plenty on 07/17/2020:
in terms of my own cardio / leg ability, i feel i'd be a beginner on youtube too. it's good you're delving into that website for resources. you won't be bored!

grannyannie on 07/18/2020:
I thought I'd be okay as I still have good leg muscles, especially thighs from all the squats and lunges. But all the jump, get on floor, jump up stuff was too hard!

Maria7 on 07/17/2020:
What a beautiful iris! Love the color! Have been enjoying the gorgeous photos you have been sharing with us, too. Thank you!

grannyannie on 07/18/2020:

On a bike ride a few years ago:  Isle of Bute

Progress as of today: 2.8 lbs lost so far, only 21.8 lbs to go!

Donkey on 07/16/2020:
Were you hungry on the lower calorie days?

grannyannie on 07/16/2020:
I started getting hungry mid afternoon. But otherwise okay. And porridge in the morning lasts longer than toast and yogurt.

grannyannie on 07/16/2020:
But next week I'll do 1,000 every other day.

legcramps on 07/16/2020:
Your menu today looks delicious! Enjoy!

grannyannie on 07/16/2020:
Lunch was gorgeous! Mmmmm

Horn_of_plenty on 07/16/2020:
OMG! i want to go travel to the Isle of Bute to also go on a bike trail one day!

you seem to have a good appetite and ability to be satiated! jealous!

grannyannie on 07/16/2020:
It was tough not to give in and snack!

Isle of Bute is lovely. My husband used to teach there back in the '80s.

bearcountrygg on 07/16/2020:
I want your menu!!
