Haven't been doing well. I belong to the Yellow Hearts of Remembrance group on FB for those who lost a loved one to Covid. It's depressing to see so much misery and grief, including my own.  I don't know how supportive I can be here, but I'll do my best.  

Went to 2 garden parties on Sat and Sun.  Tried to stay 2 metres or more apart, but slipped a bit the more alcohol we all had.  

But today is June 1st and I've decided it's time to start counting calories again.  Weekend garden parties I'll do alcohol, but figured I need to allow myself some during the week as well.  Only a shot of whisky with water - 56 cals, no carbs.  And I will allow myself a treat, but I plan to keep my daily intake to under 1500.  

Menu:

  • B:  porridge, blueberries, oat milk, tea w/soy milk
  • S:  Quinoa bar, coffee with coconut milk
  • L:  bacon and egg roll, packet of baked crisps
  • D:  leftover curry, no rice
  • S:  popcorn, whisky and water

Total:  1362 cals

Exercise bike:  60 mins total, some muscle work?

Progress as of today: 0 lbs lost so far, only 24 lbs to go!

I think it's good to have little rewards throughout the week and then for the weekend.

One thing I can't find any more in the supermarket is Quorn pieces and mince (vegetarian) which hubby uses in curries and chilis. So I've been buying boneless, skinless chicken thighs instead (chicken breast is too dry).  Or he uses chickpeas or other beans. Sometimes tofu.

Many people where I live take the ferry over to the city and do their shopping - bigger stores, lower prices, more variety. But they can't do that now as you have to prove that your travel over is essential.  So that means everybody is shopping in the same 2 stores. 

Plans for today:

  • B:  toast, mixed fruit, tea with soy milk
  • S:  coffee with coconut milk, quinoa bar - (cacao and salted caramel)
  • L:  7 veg salad, hummus, ham
  • D:  Leftover Massaman curry w/ small serving of rice
  • S:  packet of popcorn, will try to be satisifed with diet coke to drink

I'll choose a household chore from my list to do today.  Probably clean one or both bathrooms.  Need to make a list of exercises to do every day - even if it's just doing stretches.

Finished the shopping this morning at 7am for my friends and I.  Dampness meant biting midges were all around as we queued up for 7 am opening. Only 2 bites. Wore my mask as usual.  Maybe 4 or 5 others wore one.  Not enough.

Dusting and hoovering the living room.

Partly cloudy and warm today so might ride my bike later.  

Yes, I had a few beers out on the patio yesterday.  Starting talking about my son and made me sad.  No, I'm not worried about becoming an alcoholic. If I was destined to be one it would have happened decades ago.

  • B: toast, mixed fresh fruit, tea with soy milk
  • S:  quinoa bar and coffee
  • L:  7 veg salad with hummus, ham, and cottage cheese
  • D:  Massaman curry, small portion rice

I'm beginning to get to know quinoa....and find it a nice rice alternative...it seems to be a good base for lots of things...but I don't think I have seen a quinoa bar...sounds interesting. Hope you have nice weather today Annie.

We used to eat quinoa instead of rice occasionally, but don't have any in the house right now. The quinoa bars I eat are made by a British company. https://perkier.co.uk/ They are gluten free which hubby needs but I don't. He is very fussy and not a snacker but he loves the Cacao & salted caramel quinoa bars. They have nuts, dates, cacao, sea salt, caramel. 137 cals, protein, fibre. Sunny today and mid 60's. But Sunday is to be 70 and sunny so looks like a socially distant garden party.

Thanks :) We only have 2 supermarkets in town. The hours at the big one are 6-7 NHS workers, and 7 on is anybody. So I get there at 7. It's supposed to be only 20 allowed in the store at once and 2 metres apart but I think they let in more than that now. I've always been a morning shopper as they run out of fruit and veg later in the day. Used to go after a gym workout around 9:30 or 10.

Was not even tempted to have a beer or wine yesterday.  Socially distant garden party is changed to the weekend when the forecast is better. 

Today I do a click and collect at the supermarket.  Just sit in the car and the groceries are put in the boot.  I can get the majority of it this way, but always have a short-ish list of stuff I can't.  So I go back tomorrow to get the rest (wearing a mask and 2 metres apart) and also what our friends need that they can't get with click and collect.  This couple can't risk leaving the house at all (except click and collect which is no risk at all).  So I just leave what I buy for them on their porch. 

Did 60 minutes on the exercise bike yesterday. Will try to do something with dumbbells today - upper and lower body. 

Not much ambition to do housework. I do keep the kitchen clean and the laundry done and sometimes do hoovering.  Occasionally clean one of the bathrooms.  I think I should make a list of household chores and do at least one every day. 

I've already finished a 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle and am working on another one.  Very distracting. 

Plans:

  • B: toast, fresh fruit salad, tea with soy milk
  • S:  quinoa bar and coffee
  • L:  6 veg salad with cheddar chunks
  • D:  Massaman curry, small serving of rice

Good for you for breaking the string of days that you've consumed alcohol! So now you know it can be done, and can be done again.

That's so nice that you are helping your neighbors with shopping. Are you finding some foods difficult to come by? Shortages, that is.

I love doing puzzles with my husband. It's one of the few activites that we can do together.

I know it can be done. I've often gone months without wanting anything. But we started talking about my son today while sitting out in the sun and cold beer sounded good. My concern is weight gain due to alcohol, not the alcohol itself. My husband isn't interested in doing puzzles, but that's okay.

I can find almost any food we need. Rice was difficult for a while but fine now. Pasta was hard to find but we don't eat pasta.

Happy for you that you weren't tempted last night....since you would like to cut back. I gravitate back and forth with the housework....days of cleaning and then days of putting it off.....I get irritated with myself sometimes....and where i used to like scheduled days way back in the past out of necessity...now in retirement...I fight that...i try and try to make a schedule...and i somehow always seem to sabotage it.....right now...I'm just rolling with it and getting the work done when I'm motivated...if you figure out how to do it...please let me know...I'm open to suggestions because when I set a schedule...I don't want to get out of bed in the morning.

I'm concerned with the carbs and calories in beer and the calories in wine, and alcohol overall is bad for weight loss. I made a list of 7 chores to do and plan to do one of them daily. Today did washing kitchen floor.

Another gloomy day but tomorrow looks dry although cloudy. That means the biting highland midge will be out to feast on us. So I'll be wearing a midge repellant.  We are going to do another socially distant garden party - wine, beer and chat - with friends of ours.  We've done this several times now and it's very uplifting.  My plan was to only have alcohol for these social occasions once a week (couldn't do it this week - bad weather).  Still my goal. 

When we were first self isolating I quit my usual after-Thailand diet and started indulging in a nightly routine of 2 big bottles of craft beer with Doritos while watching a Netflix series or a movie.  Then when my world collapsed I drank something every day whether 1 beer or 3.  It was several weeks before I began skipping days.  I really wish I hadn't begun tryiing a variety of different beer types and then liking them!  

Plans for Sunday

  • B:  toast, porridge with berries, tea with soy milk
  • S:  quinoa snack bar, coffee
  • L:  6 veg salad with cheddar
  • D:  whatever curry or stir fry hubby is making tonight
  • S:  1 packet of popcorn

Plan to get on my exercise bike twice for 30 minutes each while reading my mystery, some work with dumbbells.

Yes porridge is just the term for oatmeal here. Technically it means any hot cereal but oatmeal is what many eat here. It's very Scottish.

In years past, one thing I always enjoyed reading in your diaries is your weight training schedule. If you get back into it, I would enjoy reading those schedules again. And if you do not, then that is OK too.

Back in 2010, when my life as I had known it came to an end, I put on 30+ pounds eating Tostitos with giardinara every night while watching cable TV (before Netflix was a thing). That was the 2nd to the last time I had gained weight.

I'll get back to the weights eventually. I sometimes do them now but only upper body. After my shoulder injury I've feared lifting more than 3kg. I'd probably feel better if I got back in the routine. Slowly. I've gained and lost so many times! Gets harder to lose every time. In 2012 I got to 128 for my 60th birthday.

For awhile I was Indulging and trying wines of various types at the beginning of quarantine but it was not satisfying and I’m usually not a big drinker so I eventually stopped! But I still am liking my spiked seltzer which I sweeten extra with stevia.

It’s really easy to get out of routine and even harder to build back I to it - that’s why I am doing and sticking with my home weights which varies in difficulty for me depending how hard I’m working at it .... it’s easy to lose strength !

Didn't do well yesterday.  I wasn't going to have any alcohol but I got very upset reading about others losses in a Covid bereavement group and talking about my own loss. So I opened a bottle of rose' wine - low alcohol - but still drank a lot of it.  Ate extra packets of popcorn but that's not bad. 

Will TRY hard to behave today.  It's another gloomy day here - windy and rainy.  I work on a jigsaw puzzle which is a good distraction.  And I'm reading a mystery which I can do on my exercise bike.

Menu:

B:  toast, porridge with strawberries, tea w/soy milk

S:  coffee and quinoa snack bar

L:  6 veg salad with cheddar

D:  Thai green curry with small amount of rice

S:  popcorn

Exercise??  Will try to get on my exercise bike and read my book.

I've seriously thought about ending my sobriety. I can understand the temptation to do so. I think that's why I turn to cookies, etc., instead. Same emotions, just a different vice. Try to be forgiving and gentle with yourself.

And if it helps, we're having rainy, gloomy weather here too. The only blessing is that the temperatures will be warm. About time...

I always find that sitting on a hot beach in Thailand every winter goes very well with a cold bottle of beer. But it carries over when we come home.

I only started eating salads for lunch again last week. We eat a lot of curry, especially Thai ones - hubby is the cook and very creative so I'm lucky. Thanks. I did have a G & T with hubby last night. Not bad. Beer is the worst for weight.

I've got no junk food in the house and just finished my Ryvita crackers. Tempted by beer and wine though and trying to resist. Being indulgent is comforting but I know it's not a good idea to drink too much when grieving and depressed. 

I managed 50 minutes on my exercise bike yesterday but no muscle work. 

Menu:

  • B: toast, fresh fruit salad, tea with soy milk
  • S: quinoa snack bar and coffee
  • L:  6 veg salad with cheddar, 3 ryvita crackers with butter
  • D: Thai green curry with small serving or rice, diet tonic with lime
  • S:  caffeine free diet coke, packet of popcorn (I've ordered big boxes of individual packs of unbuttered popcorn at 87 cals a pack - so guilt free)

It's a rainy, windy, sunless, depressing day so can't guarantee I won't have a glass of wine or a beer

I'm lucky to not have the taste for beer, if I did I'm sure I would be twice my size. Great job on the exercise bike! No sun for days here...as well. This in itself is very depressing.

Also no taste for alcohol....have plenty of wine around from years ago...because I loved the look of a wine rack....but wine rack is gone because this house has no place for it........but the wine sits here.......I have been drunk exactly 1 time in my life...and it only took 2 glasses of wine......LOL....the hangover guaranteed that I wouldn't do that again.....anyway...red wine causes an asthma attack...with only a couple of sips...so there is that. I guess we all have something we lean on when we are down....it's a battle either way. Take care, and let yourself grieve. I'm not saying drink, unless you choose to, but you are going through a sad time now. Have you read anything written by Elizabeth Kubler Ross? It may be old time theories of grief.....but I think for our generation...it is sound advise. (((HUGS)))

I very rarely have gotten drunk, once a year maybe. Don't like hangovers. Too much red wine gives me heartburn, so normally a rose' or beer.

I'm in a FB group called Yellow Hearts to Remember - Covid 19. So talking to people going through the same thing is more helpful than reading a book.

Hi everybody! Been a long time but I needed to come back as my weight is out of control. Most I've ever weighed but I've come close at 167. A lot of my muscle has disappeared.

A lot has happened since I was here in November. Spent our usual 3 months in Thailand. Came home March 3rd and almost immediately went into self-isolation to be safe. Having to cancel some trips and also feeling trapped at home made me comfort eat and increase my beer consumption.  

Then I was worried about my son in the US who was in the hospital with Covid. April 5th he died. I didn't eat much at all for about a week though I did continue to drink beer.  Every since I've been comfort eating and drinking a lot of beer and sometimes wine.  

I feel horrible and huge and unhealthy. I've done very little exercise - just a few walks or bike rides.  So I need to start doing consistent exercise. I know I'll feel better. I'm watching my eating more but can't seem to go more than one day without beer. And beer is the worst for weight gain.

So I'm back here looking for suport and I need to check in every day.

Thursday plans:

B: toast, bowl of mixed fruit, tea w/soy milk

S: Quinoa snack bar, coffee with coconut milk

My weekend in the city was good but very, very tiring. Sat was 2 ½ hours standing in a huge crowd listening to speeches about independence for Scotland - I felt like a sardine in a can! Then changed into nicer clothes back at the hotel and had a nice Thai dinner. Then an amazing classical concert in the evening.  Sunday was visiting 4 museums in Edinburgh. Did a TON of walking.

I did not behave but didn’t go as much overboard as I could have. There was definitely alcohol and sugar.

 

Busy today!  Gym, then grocery shopping, then muscle workout at home!

 

Menu

  • B: porridge, berries, tea w/soy milk
  • S: coconut/almond milk cappuccino, quinoa & cranberry bar
  • L:  6 veg salad w/cheddar and bacon
  • D:  homemade curry out of freezer

Gym: 

  • treadmill - (intervals uphill and speed) - 10 mins

  • rowing machine - 10 mins
  • recumbent bike -  20 mins
  • Leg press (22.5kg) - 6 sets of 10

 

Home muscle workout:  3 sets of 5 or 10 (sets of 5 for those that target shoulders)

  • Lunges & squats using dumbbells
  • Upper body weights - only 3kg - (shoulder injury)
  • Abs
  • Planks
  • thigh/bum exercises with ankle weights

Wow, sounds like quite an adventure. Is the independence for Scotland tied into the Brexit issue?

I try to keep current with Brexit, but it's hard to watch/read for too long. I have no solution nor any strong opinion either way, but as a lover of all things in the UK, it's difficult to watch people in conflict. Mostly I feel sadness.

Scotland had an independence vote in 2014. I voted yes. We lost 45% to 55%. Brexit, which Scotland did not want, is extra incentive to have another vote on independence. We are sick of London rule and we want to stay in the EU.

4 weeks from today we leave for Thailand. I will obviously have to lose weight after we arrive so my shorts and swimsuits get comfy and stay comfy.

Treating myself to a weekend in Glasgow while hubby is in Australia. Got a hotel room in the city centre (easy to walk to everything). Heading in this morning after breakfast and will drop my suitcase off at the hotel. Unfortunately, the forecast is 60% rain all weekend! Oh well….I’ve got my long raincoat with hood and waterproof athletic shoes. 

 

I had planned on going to a museum to see the Linda McCartney photo exhibit, but I did that on Monday when I went into the city overnight for the funeral.  I discovered that there is a Scotland independence rally this afternoon. And our First Minister (similar to a prime minister) will be speaking in the city centre. Plans are for another independence vote in 2020. 

I’ve booked dinner at a nice Thai restaurant. Later in the evening I have a ticket to the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall for one of my favourite classical concerts. Will have a gin and diet tonic before the concert and another at intermission.

Sun

Heading into Edinburgh right after breakfast - a 45 min train ride from Glasgow.  A fascinating and very old city. Going to visit a few small museums I’ve yet to visit.  Lunch at the biggest museum - National Museum of Scotland. Planning on dinner back in Glasgow at a new-ish brewpub. They only serve pizza and will have one of their amazing beers (a porter) with it (wish I hated beer!!).

Breakfast at a lovely cafe with decor in the style of Glasgow’s favourite artist - Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Might meet up with an inlaw. Afterward I finally have my hearing test. Then some lunch and shopping and will head home and back to 1,000 calories a day except one night on the weekends.

Sounds like a lovely weekend holiday. My husband and I went to Glasgow and Edinburgh about 10 years ago or so - really fun! We went with a tour group, which I think is fine for a first time, but if we go again, we'll go on our own, I think.

It's good to get a taste of the cities by tour the first time. Then you know where you want to go back to.

Scotland...how wonderful....my husband is of Scottish descent....is a love for bagpipes a genetic thing???? By the way...our last name is about as Scottish as you can get...He is from the Campbell Clan.

Lots of Campbell castles near me. I feel Scottish although I don't know know for sure if I have any Scottish ancestry. I do have lots of Irish though. I adore Scotland. Been here 20 years in April.
