(Healthy food-fitness-getting back to ideal weight)
Weight: 134.8

I am very grateful for this time with our (Ugandan) daughter, and for all the trips I have to look forward to in the next 9 months....two of them involving warm weather!!

Daughter goes to the island next Tuesday. Husband has been spoiling her with all the foods she very rarely gets to eat in Uganda. The diet there is quite monotonous. I'd hate to have her get a cholesterol test right now!  He's feeding her sausages and bacon and pork. Lots of sugary treats as well. The greasy, disgusting MESS I have to clean up after he cooks all that fatty meat is enough to make anyone permanently vegetarian.  Yuck!  She'll get healthy food on the island and little meat so not worried about this 2 weeks of a bad diet.

I'm looking forward to starting our vegan experiment after she goes. We'll freeze any leftover meat and give it to her when she comes back in Sept for two weeks before going home to Uganda.

Workout:

  • 30 mins of pure torture in my spin class! No way I could keep up although I never sat down when I was supposed to be standing. But when we are told to crank up the resistance, I don't.  I also don't do the jumps as fast as we are supposed to, or the sprints on high resistance.

Workout at home (lower body):

  • squats, lunges w/dumbbells
  • thighs/glutes with ankle weights
  • planks - full and alternating
  • thigh master
  • abs-4 routines
  • bridge (for glutes, core, thighs)
  • calf lifts
Menu:
  • B:  porridge/cinnamon/raspberries/almond milk, tea w/milk
  • S:  2 oatcakes w/pb
  • L:  plain yogurt w/strawberries, 4 oatcakes w/hummous, chocolate soy milk (high cal so won't drink that very often)
  • D:  sweet potatoes, peas cooked from dried, smoked sausage, salad
  • Teas and water
TOTAL:  hard to calculate the dinner but I'd guess under 1500

Progress as of today: 32.2 lbs lost so far, only 6.8 lbs to go!

Puddles on 05/09/2013:
That is one thing I really do not miss the greasy clean ups in the kitchen. Have a great day Annie.

grannyannie on 05/09/2013:
Thanks Fran.

OhioRaven on 05/09/2013:
Ha-ha ! Like your post, Annie.

biscottibody59 on 05/09/2013:
Hope you're having a good day/evening!

V on 05/09/2013:
Call me crazy but your spin sounds like a KILLER workout(in a good way mind you, LOL) or as Shaun T would say resickulous! Hahaha

Hey I didn't realize that your daughter is going to be on the Island til Sept..What a great experience that will be for her..I forgot to ask what her occupation in Uganda will be since she has graduated?? Just curious..

Let your hubby spoil her, as young as she is I am sure she has a cast iron tummy! Have a great evening Annie ans YES you can borrow some energy, I have plenty of it!

grannyannie on 05/10/2013:
It is most definitely a KILLER workout! And my class has the toughest instructor.

Yes, daughter will volunteer for 14 weeks on the island.

Her degree is business but she's had no luck finding a good job, just those where you work on commission. Unfortunately, you need to have connections or to offer bribes to get many of the good jobs in Uganda.

Not good yesterday - too much snacking.   Good today. Husband and daughter went into Glasgow to shop and visit uncle and will go out to lunch and maybe dinner. If I went I'd miss my gym day and probably eat/drink what I shouldn't. So I stayed and did the gym. On my own for dinner.

Yesterday was gorgeous!  Mid 60's sunny.  Went for a short bike ride - about 5 miles.

Been trying out different soy milks and almond milk. Husband loves the almond milk in his cappuccinos.

Waiting to hear when the uncle's funeral is and whether it will be when we are due to spend the night on the island and drop daughter off at the religious community to begin her volunteering. If the funeral coincides with this then husband will go by himself and I'll take daughter.

Workout at gym:

  • 30 mins spin bike
  • 10 mins treadmill - uphill
  • 10 mins elliptical
  • 4 sets of 12 on 4 resistance machines (upper body and back)
  • cables/pulley for triceps - 4 sets of 12

Workout at home:  edited: too much to do the entire muscle work today. So will do lower body tomorrow after spin class as originally planned.

  • 7 min video routine for triceps/arms using .5kg wrist weights
  • dumbbells - 3 sets of 12 - 7 routines
  • push ups, triceps dips
  • side dips with dumbbell
  • squats, lunges w/dumbbells
  • thighs/glutes with ankle weights
  • planks - full and alternating
  • thigh master
  • abs-4 routines
  • bridge (for glutes, core, thighs)
  • calf lifts
Menu:
  • B:  porridge/cinnamon/date-raisin-apricot mix/soy milk, tea w/milk
  • S:  2 oatcakes w/pb
  • L:  grilled turkey bacon & low fat cheddar, plain yogurt w/raspberries, diluted mango smoothie
  • D:  salad w/Quorn southern style patty/boiled egg, 2 oatcakes
  • Teas & water
TOTAL:  under 1400

Progress as of today: 32.2 lbs lost so far, only 6.8 lbs to go!

Puddles on 05/08/2013:
Good decision. Have a great day Annie.

grannyannie - Monday May 06, 2013
(Healthy food-fitness-getting back to ideal weight)
Weight: 134.8

Wasn't good over the weekend. And yesterday we went to our friends' house for dinner. So today I'm being very good. It's a Bank Holiday Monday here and the gym didn't open until 10 so I decided to do my workout at home. We've invited our friends for dinner on Saturday. So another challenge for me. Husband told our friends that our daughter would cook them traditional Ugandan food....impossible because you can't buy any of the ingredients here. Don't know what he'll cook...maybe BBQ some chicken. I could make soup for a starter instead of the usual salad. And I'll bake some oatmeal raisin cookies like I did yesterday to bring for dinner.

Workout at home:

  • 45 mins tae bo/jump rope
  • 7 min video routine for triceps/arms using .5kg wrist weights
  • dumbbells - 3 sets of 12 - 7 routines
  • push ups, triceps dips
  • side dips with dumbbell
  • squats, lunges w/dumbbells
  • thighs/glutes with ankle weights
  • planks - full and alternating
  • thigh master
  • abs-4 routines
  • bridge (for glutes, core, thighs)
  • calf lifts

Menu:

  • B:  porridge/cinnamon/strawberries/almond milk, tea w/milk
  • L:  2 veggie sausages on a wheat wrap w/mustard, finished up the rest of the plain soy yogurt and the strawberries and raspberries so the yogurt was 206 cals, diluted mango smoothie.
  • D:  Husband and daughter having BBQ'd chicken (legs and thighs) & potatoes and corn on cob.  I'll substitute sliced chicken breast and will also have salad w/pumpkin seeds and walnuts
  • S:  2 oatcakes & low fat cheddar
  • Teas & water

TOTAL:  under 1400

Progress as of today: 32.2 lbs lost so far, only 6.8 lbs to go!

getmebackto150 on 05/06/2013:
I hope you have a good and healthy day! I think there are a few of us that veered a bit off track over the weekend so here is to a healthy day for all of us!!

Thanks! Weekends can be tough.

OhioRaven on 05/06/2013:
Dinner sounds interesting tonight. Have a good day, Annie !

Puddles on 05/06/2013:
Having company does make it a little bit difficult but it is a temporary situation. I know that you will just get back to your routine after. Right now just enjoy your company. Have a great day Annie.

grannyannie on 05/06/2013:
Thanks Fran.

JBGirl on 05/06/2013:
Have you thought about substituting milk for almond/coconut milk? It has much lower calories and tastes delicious. These little cuts add up...

Very proud of you for the meal planning. Watch those portions! Even healthy foods have calories.

Love your weight gauge, you have lost so much and you are so close to your goal.

grannyannie on 05/06/2013:
I don't use coconut milk. I've just started using almond and soy milk and they have less calories than skimmed milk. I count all my calories and weigh all my food with my gram scale.

V on 05/06/2013:
Hi Annie!! Just catching up with your posts and wow your daughter is beautiful :)I am sure you and hubby will come up with deelish dinner ideas for Saturday! Have a great evening my friend <3

(Healthy food-fitness-getting back to ideal weight)
Weight: 134.8

Picked up our (Ugandan) daughter from the airport yesterday morning. Her flights weren't bad and she enjoyed the food. We stayed in Glasgow most of the day and had lunch and did some shopping. She was cold and we bought her a warm rainjacket with hood as she'll need it for her volunteering on the island. Also bought her a swimsuit as she and her 'dad' are going to go to the pool at my gym. He taught her how to swim last time she was here which was 3 years ago. I had more calories than I should have - probably about 2100. She doesn't like curries or anything that is spicy or hot at all, so we've bought chicken, bacon, sausages, a couple of pigeons and the treats that she likes and rarely gets. I will, however, behave. When she and husband have BBQ'd chicken, potatoes and corn on cob, I'll replace the BBQ'd with slices of chicken breast. I'll have my veggie sausages when they have pork ones, etc etc.  Won't touch the ice cream or the chocolate chips muffins. We might as well spoil her before she spends 14 weeks at the religious community. They serve a lot of soup, rarely serve meat, but do serve cake sometimes.  She does, btw, weigh 121 lbs and is 5'8", not gaining weight is not a worry for her (yet).

I hurt my side Wednesday and I'm pretty sure it's because I added side planks to my plank routine but must have done it wrong. Hurts a lot today and sitting in the car a long time yesterday made it worse. Took Ibuprofen and have no plans to do side planks again, ever.

Looks like another funeral in Glasgow soon - husband's uncle (who was the BIL of the lady whose funeral we attended last week). I believe he'd been ill for a long time. Don't think I've ever met him.

Workout at gym:

  • 35 mins spin bike
  • 10 mins treadmill
  • 5 mins rowing machine
  • 4 sets of 12 on 3 resistance machines (upper body)

Workout at home:

  • 7 min video routine for triceps/arms using .5kg wrist weights
  • dumbbells - 3 sets of 12 - 7 routines
  • push ups, triceps dips
  • side dips with dumbbell
Menu:
  • B:  porridge/cinnamon/raspberries/soy milk, tea w/milk
  • S:  2 oatcakes w/pb
  • L:  chicken breast/extra light mayo on wheat wrap, plain soy yogurt w/fresh strawberries
  • S:  grapes
  • D:  veggie curry & brown rice, salad w/pumpkin seeds & walnuts & 50 g avocado (the other two are going to have roast pigeon, potatoes, veggies, etc etc.)
  • Teas & water
TOTAL:  under 1500

Progress as of today: 32.2 lbs lost so far, only 6.8 lbs to go!

JBGirl on 05/03/2013:
I think it is amazing you have only 6.8 lbs to go. You're doing such a great job.

grannyannie on 05/03/2013:
Thanks! I was at goal then took trips and gained some back.

Puddles on 05/03/2013:
Hope your side is feeling better soon. Don't do side planks whatever that is. You do so many other exercises. Enjoy your visitor Annie.

grannyannie on 05/03/2013:
Planks are great but I'll stick with regular full planks and alternating. Really good for your 'core' (abs, back, internal muscles).

OhioRaven on 05/03/2013:
I hope you spoil the daughter and she will always have fond memories of you.

V on 05/03/2013:
I am so sorry that you are injured :( That is so sweet that you guys get to dote attention to your daughter, I am sure she appreciates everything <3 You rock Annie! Have a great weekend :)

Cheers, V! <3

grannyannie - Wednesday May 01, 2013
(Healthy food-fitness-getting back to ideal weight)
Weight: 134.8

Didn't get to my lower body workout yesterday - too busy with housework, then got Skyped by SIL in Australia about the trip to her daughter's wedding next year. So doing my full routines today as soon as I get off this computer. House is all clean so after my shower I can just relax.

Went to our area's one and only health food store after the gym to see what they had that could replace Quorn which contains egg white (for our vegan experiment). They did have something similar that was vegan, also bought some tempeh which I've never tried, and some almond milk (although we've got lots of unsweetened soy milk). The clerk had some vegan ice cream but I took a look at the calories and resisted. I'm sure our friends will invite us for dinner during the time we're doing the vegan thing and don't know what to do. Maybe we'll just have to invite them here instead and serve them a vegan meal and some vegan ice cream?

Getting up VERY early tomorrow morning to meet our Ugandan daughter's flight    which arrives at 7.45.  It takes almost 1 1/2 hours to get to the airport from our house. Then we are meeting up with some of husband's relatives in Glasgow for lunch, then grocery shopping and daughter can pick what she likes. I intend to get a lower cal dish at the restaurant/pub - a Sweet Chilli Noodle w/chicken breast (546 cals) or since Thursday is curry club day I can get sweet potato/chickpea/spinach curry with extra poppadams instead of naan bread (685 cals) and I know I'll want at least one pint of beer (185).  I WILL stick to my plans while our daughter is visiting!  Getting too close to backslide now and the deadline is looming!

Workout at gym:
  • 35 mins spin bike - intense!  Cranked the resistance way up quite a few times to make it even harder.
  • 10 mins elliptical
  • 4 sets of 12 on 4 resistance machines
  • cables/pulley for triceps - 4 sets of 12
Workout at home:
  • 7 min video routine for triceps/arms using .5kg wrist weights
  • dumbbells - 3 sets of 12 - 7 routines
  • push ups, triceps dips
  • side dips with dumbbell
  • squats, lunges w/dumbbells
  • thighs/glutes with ankle weights
  • planks - full and alternating
  • thigh master
  • abs-4 routines
  • bridge (for glutes, core, thighs)
  • calf lifts
Menu:
  • B:  porridge/cinnamon/raspberries/soy milk, tea w/milk
  • L:  4 oatcakes, low fat cheddar, hummous, yogurt
  • S:  clementine
  • D:  veggie and bean curry & basmati rice, salad w/walnuts
  • S:  fruit/seed/cashew mix - 50 g
  • Teas & water
TOTAL:  under 1500

Progress as of today: 32.2 lbs lost so far, only 6.8 lbs to go!

Puddles on 05/01/2013:
wow its already here. Time flies. Enjoy your visit with your daughter. Have a safe trip.

grannyannie on 05/01/2013:
Time does fly! Thanks! We just saw her in Uganda 3 months ago but seems longer.

getmebackto150 on 05/01/2013:
Your restaurant choices sound yummy and healthy!!! Finding vegan things can be tricky! And yes going out and going over to friends is always hardest for me just as a vegetarian and when I was eating vegan it was MUCH harder... Enjoy time with your daughter!!

grannyannie on 05/01/2013:
Thanks! Eating vegan at home is easy, but as a guest or at a restaurant...forget it. That's why I didn't stick to it 20 years ago. Won't do our 'experiment' until daughter goes on her stint.

OhioRaven on 05/01/2013:
Have a great adventure, Annie.

(Healthy food-fitness-getting back to ideal weight)
Weight: 135.0

Goal is getting closer!  I'll be happy with 5 more pounds. I've bought all this healthy stuff - avocadoes, dried fruit and nuts and seeds, other 'superfood' nuts for now and for our 'vegan experiment' in a couple of weeks.

Finishing housework and getting guest room ready for Ugandan daughter. A bit of stress going on as this trip she has to transfer airplanes twice (Nairobi and Amsterdam). Last time it was only once - in Dubai -and on that trip we had arranged a 'meet and greet' person to hold her hand and take her to the lounge we had booked for her. Crossing our fingers and gave her good advice.

Only a couple of white fluffy clouds in the sky and temp at 9.30am is nearly 50 but feels warmer in the sun. If I can get all this stuff done I'd love to go out and power walk this afternoon. Went out this morning to get a shot of our camellias but 9 was too late and the sun was too high.  Sunrise is 5.30 now.  Here's one shot that didn't wash out.

Workout at home: (lower body)

  • squats, lunges w/dumbbells
  • thighs/glutes with ankle weights
  • planks - full and alternating
  • thigh master
  • abs-4 routines
  • bridge (for glutes, core, thighs)
  • calf lifts

Menu:

  • B:  porridge/cinnamon/blueberries/soy milk, tea w/milk
  • L:  4 thin oatcakes/hummous/low fat cheddar, yogurt
  • S:  clementine
  • D:  2 Quorn burgers, veggie gravy, sweet potato, salad w/pumpkin seeds (only one serving of the tofu curry is left, so giving that to husband)
  • S:  figs
  • Teas & water

TOTAL:  under 1500

Progress as of today: 32 lbs lost so far, only 7 lbs to go!

OhioRaven on 04/30/2013:

Yayyy for sunshine! I am sure you are thrilled about that :) Hopefully the weather will be nice for when your daughter visits, but I am sure she may be looking forward to cooler temps since it is quite warm in Uganda, LOL.. Awesome workouts as always girl! Have a good day <3

grannyannie on 04/29/2013:
Cheers, V! She'll be too cold when it's under 70!

(Healthy food-fitness-getting back to ideal weight)
Weight: 137.0

Got very busy yesterday with housework and getting our Ugandan daughter's room ready for her visit. Then my vacuum bit the dust - motor burned out so had to research and order another one online. So, didn't get my workout in but doing it today.

Experimented with a new bread (in the machine) yesterday as something for guests - maple and oat bread with white and wholemeal flour. Have had a craving for French toast so made some for lunch. It was good but nothing to rave about.

Workout at home:

  • upper and lower body muscle routines (done)
  • 45 mins tae bo/jump rope w/wrist weights

Menu:

  • B:  porridge/cinnamon/raspberries/soy milk, tea w/milk
  • L:  French toast w/maple syrup and cinnamon, yogurt
  • S:  grapes
  • D:  veggie curry & basmati rice, salad w/walnuts
  • S:  clementines
  • Teas & water

TOTAL:  about 1500

Progress as of today: 30 lbs lost so far, only 9 lbs to go!

You are a mad scientist with your bread making. Have a good day.
