Yesterday was a good day. I stayed very low on starchy carbs. For dinner husband, Mark, and I were alone. He is taking off work this week - Spring Break for daughter and we picked up some delicious salmon filets for dinner. I soaked them in a little terriyaki glaze and grilled them. Yum-Yum. Had a salad and fresh red beets to go with it. I also had 1/2 a beer. I never finish them! Molson's Golden - yum!

No real exercise yesterday - just some very light yard work for about 30-40 minutes, Abs. and stretching.

I have eaten a little too much for lunch today. I have been hungry today. Staying away from starches still, though. I feel so much better when I limit the starches. I can't believe it. It takes some getting used to because so much of my quick foods were starch based. I am used to snacking on a few pretzels or granola bars, for example. No more. I re-think everything and have been having a banana with peanut butter or apple and peanut butter or apple and cheese for snack now. There are many kinds of cheeses that I can take with me. Apples and bananas transport well, too. I try to include protein at every meal AND snack.

I get the deli to cut very thick slices of turkey, ham, roast beef and then cube that up and keep it in a zip lock container in the frig. That way I always have cooked protein handy. I grill extra chicken when I grill so that I have left-overs. I throw that in a salad - which I keep in a bag in the 'frig and add some sliced almonds, grapes, apple slices, what ever and some dressing. Nuts are my big snack, or cottage cheese. I find I don't really want much between meals now. Because I am eating enough protein I don't get as hungry between or have nearly as many cravings (I think).

I drink skim milk before bed and that seems to hold hunger through the night. I think I might weigh later this week......I've been "threatening" to weigh for some time now, haven't I? Oh, well.....we'll see.

I have been reading posts, but not commenting much. There are a couple of posts that I wanted to say something on, but wanted to make sure I'm in proper frame of mind as the answers are very important to me. So some of you may hear from me yet. I really like how posters can ask questions and get comments from well-intended people who really have no stake in their answers - therefore the responses are more neutral than the responses we would probably get from friends and family. A Diet Forum may seem like a light-hearted format, but I have come to see that we are all getting and giving alot of support on here. I am very grateful for that.

I have always found the support on here a massive help. I dont talk much about trying to lose weight to my family and friends because I know I have support here. Somehow that seem to takes the pressure off me, and I'm not irritating people at home by going on and on about it!! The trouble is, people then think that it has been easy for me, which it hasnt.

Thanks for your comment Holly. i dont get the chance to sit down at work except for my break times, which is why the number of steps is so high. I am there for seven and a half hours with 70 minutes of breaktime and the rest of the time I am shelving books, and showing students where to find them so all I do is walk up and down. The necklace in the picture was a gift my sister brought back from Spain. I like big semi-precious stones, or shells in a silver setting so that is what people tend to buy for me. Turquoise is one of my favourite stones. I do like the necklace in the picture though which is made from some sort of volcanic deposit polished up!!!!!

Hi, i've cut my starches right down to what i used to eat,and i don't feel bloated.I have changed to brown/granary bread instead of that white stodgy stuff.I know for a fact if i had'nt found this website i would still be eating the same old rubbish,sat on the couch being so miserable.It is good that there is somewhere to write your views,and all battling with the same problem, i wish i had found it sooner.Although i have only been using the computer for about 8months as we where not connected to the internet,the kids where just using it to play games.Bye 4 now ,Julie

Well, we had a beautiful weekend here. I did OK on Sat and Sun. I ate more cabrohydrates than I intended, but I don't think it set me back much. I had been craving oatmeal cookies. I made some on Sat. I ate too many - that's where most of the carbs I ate came from. I made them with 1/2 real white and brown sugar and 1/2 brown and white sugar splenda. I couldn't tell the difference.

Anyway - due to a lot of much needed housework I didn't do much exercise this weekend. But will get back on it this week.

I highlighted my hair which I have done before - a long time ago. I would have liked it....but, I made the stands too wide and it wound up looking like I am blond on top and dark on the bottom. Also, I forgot how quickly my hair takes color and left it on a little too long! My hair is kind of chin length. It sounds bad, but the actual effect isn't terrible. I have seen worse professional color jobs, at least. I am getting an overdue haircut today. After than I will re-evaluate and may put it back even color all over and try again next week. I am lucky color doesn't really stress me out. You can always change it!

I still haven't gotten my clothes closet cleaned out. I am having a hard time parting with some of my better, bigger clothes. But I think I will sell them at the consignment store where I buy used clothing. It's just a matter of getting them together.

Will keep you posted on how the low carb plan goes this week. I don't think I will have a hard time staying on it. It made me feel so much more energetic in just about 5-6 days.

No, nothing yet. We registered him at the one school where he was accepted, but the other is still not given up a final number on financial aid and scholorships. The play he is in is at the school we are waiting for a final number on. Thanks for asking. They had double dress rehersal yesterday and they open on the 18th. Counting the days now.

You seemed to have had a pretty good weekend. :-) I agree with you about hair color, it was always something I had fun with but not something to get stressed over. Although I did dye my hair way too much over a the span of 2 years a few years ago, and my hair is still recovering! I hope your hair handles it better than mine did.

Yesterday, Thursday was OK day. I ate more carbs than I had been, but I am thinking that it will still be ok when the whole week is rounded out. I went to a big meeting and they served lunch after - buffet. I did fine on the meal with chicken and lots of steamed vegetables, but they had these desserts and I just had to have one - so I didn't have bread at the meal and had a very small serving of Bread Pudding and a bite of Derby Pie. That was my total carb consumption for the day. Loaded with sugar and a major carb bomb, but my theory is that if that is all I eat once in awhile it will work out. I only had protein and a fruit serving the rest of the day.

I am so happy with my new clothes (from the Consignment Store). I am wearing one of the new tops and pants today at work. I feel so much thinner in clothes that fit.

Thank you Sandra AKA Soul (I'm still not used to your new name) for the reminder that "IF you can SEE it you can BE it" (not exactly how you put it - but I translated it -hee-hee). Good advice for using imagery to help you reach your goals. I do dare to hope for size 8! I haven't been size 8 since my late 20's! I have always been very fit, but not so think. I am 5'5" tall and an 8 would be perfect for a 53 year old. We'll see what happens. I am still not going to "worry" about it, though.

I didn't get a chance to catch up on your diaries, dear DD friends, but I will very soon. In the meantime - have a wonderful day and talk to you all this weekend.

Good work at the meeting lunch. Sounds like you practiced some awesome restraint, which is so difficult with a buffet setup.

I like your interpretation of what I said, sounded better...lol. You have the absolute right attitude, make it a goal but don't worry about it. Congratulations on reaching size 10...that is my first goal, no I take that back...size 12 is my first (I am 14 now) and then 10 and then the magic number 8.

Thank-you for your kind words on my diary, very comforting. Its amazing how touched I can feel from people I've never met, but the girls on here are so sweet and kind. I don't even share these types of feelings with my closest friends, I wish that I could but for some reason I can't. I guess it's just always been my nature to keep alot to myself.

Your doing excellent, great for you getting into a size 10!!! By the sounds of it you might just end up in a size 8! You must look and feel great!! It's always so nice to go and buy those smaller sizes, it makes all of the hard work worth while!!

I hope I'm still fit and healthy well into my 50's! Now you can say your "Fabulous at 52"!!! Great job Holly!!

Yesterday - Wednesday was a very good day. I exercised by walking an hour and did lots of ab work. I looked up new ab exercises on line and did them. I also ate very well despite lots of temptations. We had a meeting with a client that is a BAKERY and they gave us a doz donuts to take with us. I didn't eat any - just brought them to office. There were already brownies and chocolate cake there from various parties at the office this week. I didn't eat any of them all week. It is easier to resist when I think how much better I feel when I don't endulge or if I just have a taste and see that it is good, but really not that full-filling.

Ate 2 scrambled eggs and some milk for Breakfast, Dinner was kind of scant - cottage cheese and some vegetables. I liked it though. Had a big lunch - soup and salad so wasn't very hungry. Fixed husband big salad with leftover grilled chicken.

I was getting desperate for clothes and I went shopping at my favorite consignment shop today. I really did very well. I got a bunch of stuff. Nothing real dressy - like a suit or anything, but I got a good start on a summer wardrobe that really fits. I also bought two pair of pants at TJ Maxxlast night. All the 10s I tried on FIT and one pair was even a little bit big around the waist! Do I dare ever hope for a size 8? I don't really care. I just want to fit in a 10 - any 10 very comfortably. That's a good goal.

I colored my hair the other night and tonight I think I will put highlights in it. I used to do that myself and I think I can do it again. If it doesn't work out I can always just re-color it all over again in a few days. I just want to make sure it doesn't get "brassy"

I would also be happy to be back in my size 10s and have them comfortable....I can remember being in a size 8 but I could not breathe. I love to shop at the thrift stores, you can get such good deals there and when you are changing sizes monthly it is less expensive than buying new.

Don't just dare for a size 8 if that's what you want, what I mean by this is see yourself in a size 8 comfortably...imagine what it's like to already be in that size, how do you feel and see yourself in the mirror...I like to go all out and really feel that moment. I recently saw "the secret", if you haven't already it is a good motivator.

OK guys - I think it is working. I have been doing low carbs for 3 days and already I feel more energy and I "feel thinner" like I did around Christmastime.

I have been doing well on the exercise, too. Doing my push-ups and ab work every day and walking alot.

I am eating all the protein I want, all the fruit and vegetables I want but allowing myself only one serving of starchy carbs (anything in that category I want) per day. It's pretty doable and doesn't feel like a "diet". I am doing the beginning of this mode like I did the calories counting at first - I'm being as natural as I can be with it and not going to extremes with it.

The by-product of this mode of eating is that I don't eat much sugar. Also - my husband likes these types of foods and we can eat the same things more. Since the doctor told him to lose 12 pounds - maybe it will help him, too.

Who knows another week of this and I may actually go weigh myself! Yikes!

I was eating too many carbs and that was starting a vicious cycle. I was hungry all the time and eating too much sugar.

We will see what happens. It's raining very hard here. My buddy and I are supposed to walk tonight. We will see what happens, might have to resort to the Mall walking again.

This sounds like a great plan for you. I also used to be a major carb addict and I've noticed that since I cut down on carbs I have much more energy and fewer cravings. I was always a lover of sweets but now I'm rarely in the mood for sugar. So I am all in favour of this way of eating. Good for you and good luck!

I'd love to know what types of foods you are eating...what types of proteins, etc. Is it mostly meat, or eggs, etc? Just curious. I think I need to cut down on carbs too.

Thanks for the info on low carb. About 5 years ago I tried the Atkins diet, but it was short lived. It was extremely restrictive, and I'm not a huge meat and eggs eater. I adapted for a while, but still found it hard. I did lose about 20 pounds though. When I went back to eating carbs, I gained it all back. But I think if I slowly cut down, not cut out completely my carbs, I may do better. Thanks again!

The woman drawing says "my husband quit drinking soda and lost 19 pounds, I quit and lost one !!" It is definitely not equal for men and women when it comes to losing weight.

Well, the weekend was pretty good. WorkingIt2 - I think it helped to know you were keeping your fingers crossed for a good weekend.

Saturday I ate a little too much, but not bad. We had company and ate on the deck. It was great. I exercised a lot all weekend. Got to be outdoors a lot of the time.

I really got rolling on my low carb plan yesterday - used the left over grilled chicken breasts for salads and wasn't really hungry. I think I have been eating too much sugar and carbs (although the calories have been counted)and that is what has been making me hungry all the time. I have felt so "munchy" for months.

I think I can already feel the fat burning-LOL. I did low carbs before, but - just like me - I took it to the extreme and rebounded the pounds back. I am going to eat some carbs - just not many of the starchy kind. I will include fruits and vegetables this time and cut out as much sugar as I possible can. That should get my system back burning those pockets of (dare I say the word - no, I can't - the "F" word) you know what!

I also remember how much energy I had on the low carbs.

I am in a mostly humorous mood today. Amazing what some sunshine and 80 degree weather can do. It's not right, though. We have skipped right past Spring into Summer. Everythng is blooming at least 2-3 weeks ahead. It's kind of wierd!

Hey there, Thanks for the sweet message you left! My mom is back from the hospital now and wrote me an e-mail that the hospital set up an appointment for her with a dietitian, and she says "I'm determined to make whatever changes needed so that I don't have to stay in the hospital again." I hope she means that. I am hoping this is her sort of "wake up call." I'll do what I can to teach her some basics but it's mostly up to her.

I'm glad you like my healthy bakery idea : ) I'm lovin' the 80 degree weather over here too!

Well, the weekend has been a mixedbag so far. Friday was an OK day. I ended the day with about 1700 calories - a little over, but not terrible. I walked 30 minutes at lunch Friday and 1.5 hours Friday night. The weather has been so wonderful here. Saturday I really over did it - but on healthy (mostly) things. I walked 1.5 hours again on Saturday. And I did about an hour or more of racking in the front yard to clean out left-over leaves from shrubs and trim back some plants, etc. We had friends over for dinner and grilled chicken - I marinated it in Light Italiain Dressing - yum. We had a small salad and my friends brough corn pudding and homemade bread. I made a banana pudding for my dad's birthday and I made two - kept one. It's all gone now, thank goodness.

Although I ate more than I would say "I should" have, I didn't really "lose control" I just chose to eat more on that occasion. There is a difference in those two things - I am think I see.

Today I had two eggs for breakfast and will do alot of exercise today. I am trying to talk my friend into lifting weights with me. She is small and works out in her yard all the time, but she really needs to build some muscle. She is younger than I am, and I am telling her - if she doesn't do some light weights (or some exercise with resistance) she will start to lose the muscle she does have. I think I am getting through. She said she would consider it. Maybe today! I want to do laundry, clean bathrooms and give dog a bath and clean inside of my car (I am a car slob in the winter - especially).

I am going to cut alot of carbs - the starchy kind - and eat more protein this week, exercise alot more and see if I can get some fat burning going that way. IT WILL HAPPEN! I have taken the weight loss this far using the technique of cutting calories and exercising (mostly lightly - I have to admit). It's time to kick it up a notch!

Sounds to me like you did pretty well. You know, you need to have days where you eat more (dare I say even to indulge a bit) so that dieting doesn't become a bore.

Just wanted you to know, I love the Dr. Oz book!! And I haven't even finished it yet! It explains so much more than just dieting. It actually explains how we digest food and just where all the nutrients go in the body and how certain foods affect our organs. And it's done like one of those "for Dummies" books, some of it kind of funny. I'm sure you would enjoy it! I paid about $15 at Sam's Club so if you belong to that, you could get it there. You're doing incredible on the exercise. And I need that resistance work too. My arms are really getting flabby since I've had my shoulder pain and couldn't do any weights. I can't wait to get back to it! Have a great week!

Yesterday was OK. I went a little over on the calories and I didn't do any exercise. Daughter had a program last night and we didn't get home until late. Ended up with 1685 calories.

I tried on bathing suits this morning before I got dressed for work. YIKES! Just when I was starting to feel so slim - I didn't like any of them - two were too big (that's a good thing) and two were unflattering. Of course, a tan helps a lot, but really! I need to work on my legs and my abs! I do abs almost every day, but my lower tummy has always been my worst area. Even when I weighed 120-130 and taught aeroboics 5-6 days a week tummy has never been exactly flat. I have a curved lower back and that has always made my abdomen bow out.

I think I will look up some "core exercises" and just work it more and with different exercises than I am currently doing. I know what to do for the legs.....squats and lots of walking, ET and all that will help my posterior region, too.

On the bright side - my arms, midsection, chest and back look much better than they did this time last year. So I am narrowing down the "areas of concern" - or what ever you want to call them!

I really need to have a good weekend on the food end. Good Luck everyone.

You are far braver than I with the swimsuit trying on! LOL My hips and thighs are the slowest areas for me to get in shape..but I can feel it wanting to happen. Those two areas are exactly why I am so keyed up on the intensive cardio to burn that dreaded fat out of there and expose the muscle that DOES exist LOL. I have my fingers crossed for you for the weekend!

Yesterday - Wednesday 3/21 was OK. I ate 1325 calories and walked 50 minutes with a coworker after work.

I am feeling like I want to weigh to see where I am soon. I have to go to friend's house to weight since I don't have scales but I can go anytime I am ready. I am waiting until I feel like I will get a good result - I was 155.6 last time I weighed back in November, I think. I was not really making much of an effort in Jan & Feb, but I think I maintained and March has been pretty good so far.

I can't believe it's been since November since you last weighed yourself. I hop on the scale every other day! With all of your good efforts, it might be a good motivator to see how far you have come, and the scale is one way to tell that. How your clothes fit is another way. Are they fitting better? Yesterday was an OK day. I ended the day with 1125 calories and only 20 minutes of walking during my lunch hour.

Thanks to anyone who gave me some quick meal ideas. Keep them coming - everyone. I'd like even more. It did jog my memory and help me do some things that I had done in the past. I don't know why I get so stuck in ruts sometimes.

Today I plan to exercise more - walk and weights and eat about the same.
