(Healthy Eating and Exercise)
Weight: 155.6

Working on gearing up for the January challenge. Just to practice I tried drinking the water - something I usually have a hard time doing....I drank right about 56 oz without too much trouble-I just need to remember to do it. It's all about the habits. Calories were better than they have been but still a bit high. Ended the day with about 1565. That's OK for now. Saw a great article on Spark People site regarding how to stay motivated it's called 14 Tips to Start and Stick With It. You can find it at: sparkpeople.com/resource/nutrition_articles.asp?id=73

I loved all 14 tips! Made a copy and will keep posted at desk. Menus were:

B: Coffee (35), 2 cookies (100) (again-not good choices)

L: Subway Deli Style Tuna Sandwich (300)

S: 1/2 C Chex Mix - it was so good - homemade and had parmesan cheese in it! (130)

D: 1/2 Burger (again) (550) about 8 Kettle Chips (200)Not healthy I know, but this one was better than the other one so hope I am done on burgers for awhile *whew* still only ate 1/2

S: small piece of Cake - (250) -oh boy! It's almost gone (thank goodness). It is Low sugar/low fat version of a coconut cake I made myself and it was great. Totally worth it.

Did 25 minutes on E.T. in the a.m. and saw a movie (The Queen) with a friend. Off work early today. Will try to put house in order and enjoy the long weekend. I am kind of sleepy since went to bed late, got up early. Husband and daughter have been out together all day since both are off. Will see what the evening holds. Plan to go for a walk with neighbors and drink more water. Plan to post every day over the long weekend to keep on track. Happy New Year everyone!

Progress as of today: 16.4 lbs lost so far, only 5.6 lbs to go!

You are doing well it sounds. I think that you are not being to bad with the food choices you are making. I think better than mine. I wish you a Happy New Year!

Moody on 12/30/2006:
Have you tried those Crystal Light to go packs? It's the only way I can drink all my water.

I think you are doing great!!!

I love the motivating articles on sparkpeople but i prefer to post here. Much more personal and friendly. Best wishes to you for the New Year

(Healthy Eating and Exercise)
Weight: 155.6

Yesterday was "better". Ended up with 1415 - lowest day in a long time. Exercised for 25 minutes on E.T. yesterday a.m. I felt more in control and less desirous of foods that I know just aren't good for me. Counted calories again and Menus were:

B: Coffee, 1 Egg

L: Chicken & Noodles with Vegetables Cookies (3)

D: 1/2 Cheeseburger at Ruby Tuesdays 10-15 Onion Straws (some were big some were little)

S: Peanut Clusters (they are almost gone!)

I had been wanting a good hamburger and thought I'd just get it out of my system since Ruby Tuesdays has good ones. I Cut it in half and ate only half of it with no temptation to eat more. My husband actually ate his and the other half of mine! He ate the rest of my onion straws and a baked potato of his own - Maybe I'll tell him about DDs LOL! Seriously he is not overweight. The hamburger wasn't actually as good as I hoped it would be, but it was OK. Then I "burped" the onion straws the rest of the night so don't think I will be having them again soon. We went to a movie The Departed and had a good time. Daughter still at G.P.s until tonight. The movie was very good but too much foul language. It is more of a "guy" movie but I usually like those better than "chick flicks" anyway. Today is a whole other change to be successful. Hang in there everyone - 2007 is just around the corner!

Progress as of today: 16.4 lbs lost so far, only 5.6 lbs to go!

Hi there :)

Good for you on only eating half. none would have been better, but even I know we are all human. I love making my burgers at home now. Much healthier and just as good :) Keep up the great work you are well on your way to the healthier life style you deserve.

jolt on 12/28/2006:
Thanks for your comments on the job. You are very right about sales people not needing to be all that pushy. Eventually I would like to get into personal training and nutrition. So I thought this would be a good fit for me to start there, and then talk to some of the people that work there.

Hugs N thanks again

Hey, if you are going to eat a bad food, then it makes sense to eat only a high quality and good-tasting version of the bad food. :o)I do the same whenever I get a hankering for BBQ, hamburgers, Mexican, and ice cream. And once I satisfy my craving, I can go without that bad food for a long time!!

Congrats on being less than 6 pounds away from your goal! Thats awesome!

PS. Oh, if you have a Chili's nearby, I highly recommend their burgers (as a treat, not as a weightloss food). ;o)

Great day! What a bummer to crave something and not have it be as good as you wanted...or, was it a blessing..hehe

We went to see Night At The Museum and it was a great movie!

maria777 on 12/28/2006:
Good for you on only eating half!!! At least your Hubby didn't leave you any temptation, hehehe!!!

Yes, I'm still eating sugar (ice cream sundae today)...maybe soon I'll get back into the fruits and veggies and BE ABLE TO TASTE THE SWEETNESS IN THEM that eating lots of white sugar seems to have caused me to only taste sweetness in it!!! I miss where I was with the veggies and fruits...I've tried to get back to eating them...but they just DON'T TASTE like they did before I got back into eating lots of white sugar!!!

And...your peanut clusters...are they the chocolate-covered peanuts...ummmmm!!! YUM!!!

Have a good evening! SMILE!!!

smiley2 on 12/29/2006:

It may seem like extra trouble, but when i usually crave a good hamburger, i try to make it myself. I use wholewheat buns, low fat patties grilled in olive oil and all the trimmings eg fat free cheese, low fat mayo, avo, tomato, lettuce, pickles etc. Im always amazed at how good my burgers actually taste. Yes it takes a bit of time, but its so worth it in the end and its much less calories than the ones in the restaurants!

smiley2 on 12/29/2006:
I like grilling ostrich patties sometimes too.....mmmh so tasty. Yea i usually have this grillpan that i use on the stove with olive oil. We dont really grill burgers outside, since i find it tends to break easily after i put all my marinades on it lol! I forgot to tell you that i marinade my patties in dry red wine and also use it to cook in, with the olive oil, delish!

jolt on 12/29/2006:
I love the total Gym. would love it more if it wasn't burried. LOL I have a "knock off" version and paid $60.00 for it. But I find its all it claims to be. As well as I can get some good cardio work outs on it. But using a lower level and doing lots of reps.

(Healthy Eating and Exercise)
Weight: 155.6

Didn't get back on DD as planned last night, but kept count and menus (sad as they are) were:

B: Coffee, 2 eggs, 2 cookies

L: Fazoli's Kid's Ziti, Breadstick,Few Bites of Salad (didn't like the dressing at all), 4 cookies (sigh)

D - 2 Taco Bell Beef Tacos (regular), two bites of Refried Beans and 2 chips, Coconut cake

S: Chocolate Pretzels, 4 oz skim milk

Total for the day 1875! Didn't feel well - went to bed too late night before and was really tired so watched TV and slept - no exercise, but I got up this a.m. feeling much better. It could have been worse. I had gone on line not too long ago and saw the # of calories needed to maintain current weight and 1875 is within that amount, so overall - not too bad. Too many cookies or it wouldn't have been bad at all. Guess there is no sense in making a federal case out of it! Today is another day and I have already exercised (did 25 minutes on E.T. this morning)and am drinking H2O as we speak. Only have coconut cake left at the house - so will make sure I sent some over to the neighbors tonight - one neighbor ( a nice young man ) has had this cake before and loves it. So after that - it will all be gone. As the days pass the sweets look less and less like something I want to eat much of.....YUCK! Sugar is addictive or else I wouldn't still be eating so much. Like any addict, I will taper off. I think that is another reason for low energy, too - sugar just zaps my energy.

I signed up for the January challenge and have made a little score sheet for myself on a columnar pad. It has days of January 1-31 down the left side and the Regular Point goals and the Bonus Point goals along the top. So, I'll see how that goes. I am going to make my calorie limit 1400 for the purpose of this challenge so that I can hope to keep in with in that. My normal has been 1200-1400. Do you think that is OK? I liked the challenge set-up because there was no weigh loss goal in particular - just points for doing healthy things and very realistic. 10 minutes of exercise for goodness sake! I think I can do that.....and it reminds me that it is all about doing small sustainable things all the time - not big lofty goals all the time.

It is a beautiful day here but very chilly. Happy New Year 2007!

I saw a coconut cake reduced to less than half price today in the grocery store...I thought about how nice it would be to have it for New Year's Day...but I didn't get it...

Isn't something how when you allow yourself to get back into eating lots of sugar how things that tasted sweet no longer taste sweet? Like...apples tasted sweet before I ate lots of sugar over Christmas but not now...

Have a good evening!

OK - I'm back. I didn't realize that I hadn't posted anything on my own diary since the 20th! I have ehecked out some of your posts, though. I have definitely been eating "freely". Oh, well.....I am now ready to get back to normal. I am actually SICK of the sweets and stuff! I have done some exercise in the last 5 days and plan to keep that up. We have had really warm weather here. Rain, too.

You know, when it's there we just have to finish it off so we can start over clean, right? Yuck! I'm glad it's all gone now so I can get on with the plan. Have a good week!

borntocry on 12/26/2006:
You're telling me! I'm sick of eating altogether!

Thanks for your comment. I know what you mean about your imagination running wild with the calories! That's why I generally have to come up with at least a vague count at the end of the day - I can't take not having any idea at all. Especially since I know that in the past I've gone upwards of 6000 calories in a day without even realising it. I guess there's not much point counting it up after the damage is already done but I still like to know, otherwise I fear the worst!

I did sort of OK yesterday. Ate a lot of sweets but just a little bit at a time instead of hand-over-fist LOL!

I think I ended the day with about 1400 calories and no exercise! I was going to do ET after daughter had dance - but the dance lasted WAY longer than I thought and by the time I fixed dinner.....well, you know how it is sometimes!

Basically it could have been worse. I "should" have time to do the ET tonight or walk, if weather permits.

I am SO behind on shopping and stuff. I haven't thought about it very much before now because I have just had too much on my mind but the day of reckoning is here! So I "reckon" I better get shopping! I am taking off part of tomorrow and Friday so I should be OK. My parents are the hardest gifts to buy - once I get them I usually relax a bit. Then, they never really like what I get them. I have always felt like a terrible gift-giver! I still haven't gotten my husband anything - but he has a list. I will go by that. The daughter is taken care of. So I better get "with" it! I haven't wrapped one thing - but that part I always enjoy.

Best Wishes - Holly

GG on 12/20/2006:
Atleast you planned on working out, thats always a plus! ha ha! Do you have a treadmill? if you do, watching your fav. TV shows while walking is probably the best way to sneak it in! And if you normally watch with other people, put a couch in where the treadmill is so you can atleast talk to them as well...Just a though, I am not sure of your living situation so it may not work but....it was just an idea.

Horn_Of_Plenty on 12/20/2006:
arg! You LIKE to wrap presents!??!?!!? lol, come to my house....I can entertain you with a few things that need wrapping!

Moody on 12/20/2006:
Would your parents be upset with a gift card? Or a gift certificate to their favorite restaurant maybe?? Some people don't like gift cards but if they are difficult to shop for it makes the most sense to me.

Good job on not going wild with the candies today! That takes discipline!

borntocry on 12/21/2006:
I have that same problem - my parents never like what I get them either. At least, that's how it is with my mother. And she has very expensive tastes, so often I feel like I have to spend a lot of money on her present and then she doesn't like it! Now I've started trying to get her a bunch of small things in the hope that she likes at least one of them, and if not, at least I haven't wasted too much money!

By the way, I have a question for you. I want to make a vegetarian version of burgoo! I have a recipe which I'm going to adapt to make it vegetarian. But I'm confused because I think I remember my husband saying that his mother makes burgoo with black beans. That doesn't sound right... all the recipes I've seen call for lima beans. I must be misremembering what my husband said, right? I could probably just ask him but he hates to be asked anything about cooking.

Updated Monday night. OK - I can't seem to help myself, I keep nibbling on all the candy around the house so.....I have taken it and put it down in the basement - in a place I never go so that it is out of sight out of mind. I thought I could resist better than this! I did go for a 40 minute walk and I will do 20 minutes more on ET before bedtime. I have eaten healthier food today, too - fruit and ham, although I still haven't kept count!!! I keep trying to fill myself up with things like bananas and water. I will do better tomorrow. I am hoping some of the seasonal things will lose their attraction now that I have had some of most everything! I am feeling so full all the time and so heavy (I don't want to say the "F" word - the 3 letter one!). I dislike this feeling very much. I will not make myself feel like this any more! I know I have gained, but it is only temporarily - only temporarily!! I will keep repeating that, at least it will keep me from eating if I keep saying it over and over. LOL!!! OK - done with my rant. Tomorrow is yet another day!

======================================================================= Sunday was a little better on the eating - but not much. Daughter had dance event to do so that kept me out of the house most of the day and we ate with her boyfriends parents for dinner - pretty healthy meal - good vegetable casserole and some ice cream for dessert. I began my better eating plan again today. So far so good. Packed my lunch and snacks for today so that's good. Daughter's dance schedule is much easier now so hopefully that will mean more ET for me!

About the ET - when we had our open house my husband decided to rearrange the Family room in the basement including the ET. I don't like where he has it because I have to turn head to see TV! Not good! When I told him I wanted it back where it was - he was not happy! I don't care. I liked it where it was. I don't care if it is kind of odd - I can watch TV without having to turn my head very much. We can move it if when we have company that would really care about where it is. Will have to work on that.

Drinking plenty of water today. Maybe that will help.

Progress as of today: 16.4 lbs lost so far, only 5.6 lbs to go!

Moody on 12/18/2006:
Are you planning on moving? Is that why you are having an open house?

I don't blame you for wanting the ET near the TV..I wouldn't want to have to stretch my neck to watch TV while working out..and being able to watch TV makes the time go by so much faster!

Good for you for getting the candy out of sight..whatever works is what I say..and you are right..this is just temporary!

maria777 on 12/18/2006:
Good for you on the bananas!

I just went through the process of selling a house. *hugs* I wish you luck! *smiles*

borntocry on 12/19/2006:
Hi hollybelle,

I think you did the right thing putting the candy in the basement. I do that all the time with things I find tempting. Out of sight, out of mind! I also keep things like nuts, peanut butter, etc. in the refrigerator because I hate to eat anything cold. I suppose it is a cowardly thing to do but why make things any harder on ourselves?

Thanks for the comments you left me. Fried horse beans are a snack I found at the Chinese grocery store here. Horse beans are just broad beans. They're kind of like fried green peas, if you have ever had those. They're salty and crunchy, like nuts. Oh and the Tartiflette pizza is like a regular pizza, but with sour cream instead of tomato sauce. It's covered with sliced potatoes, onions, pieces of bacon and a special cheese. It's kind of like eating a cheesy, creamy potato casserole on top of a pizza! Really good, but really unhealthy. However it is only going to be around for another five weeks as it's a seasonal thing, so after that you won't hear me mention it any more!

I have also found that reading other people's diaries helps motivate me and just generally makes me feel more positive. Also, it often simply distracts me from eating!

borntocry on 12/19/2006:
Oh yes, I also wanted to respond to your previous comment about slipping in desserts and still staying within one's calories. I've found that being able to do this is really important to me. I think that's one of the reasons I've been in such a good mood lately - I've been enjoying some of my favourite treats and still staying within my calorie range. It isn't easy but it's worth it, at least once in a while. I could probably eat several buckets of salad in the place of one slice of pizza or peanut butter sandwich, but it wouldn't be as satisfying. I wouldn't be able to stick with a diet like that for very long no matter how much it filled me up.

One thing which helps is saving the treats for the end of the day. That way I have something to look forward to, and it inspires me to keep my calories down!

Well, I have been very busy the last few days with parties and planning for our Open House. To put it short and sweet - I didn't do well on the eating plan AT ALL. I have been feeling kind of down today and I think it is because of all the sugar, junk food and just the general let down after 3 days of non-stop parties, fun and obligations. Tomorrow I will start all over. I am sure I have gained some weight the last couple of days, but just because I am up a little doesn't mean that I will stay there. I need to get all the candy out of the house as gifts soon. Daughter wants me to make peanut butter fudge and bourbon balls still. Good news is I can wait until Christmas to make the fudge and then take it to in laws where it will be eaten by all on Chistmas day and I really don't like bourbon balls all that much.....so there is hope on the horizon. If I can have just 3-4 REALLY good days I will be over the hump for the most part, I think. I have been thinking about doing a semi-fast with soups and tiny bits of solid foods just for one or two days. Right now I am pretty well not hungry at all. I have just gotten WAY off track. But I can get back on! Will check up on all the other diaries later tonight or tomorrow. Peace, and Love! Holly

Total for yesterday was about 1400. I can tell that I am beginnig to reach for some holiday goodies that I hadn't been previously. I must watch it. May be hard since I am going to make candy and other desserts and goodies in the next few days. But, you know, maybe it will only be as hard as I THINK it will be.....I must remember how BAD too much of that stuff (sugar, fat, etc.) makes me feel!!! I will exercise more to offset it all. I did 25 minutes this morning on the ET -YEA. I am off work today and tomorrow and the weather is great here so I should be able to do the exercise thing with little trouble for a few days-we'll see.

Menus yesterday were:

B: Coffee, Banana

S: 1/2 Bagel with RF Cream Cheese

L: Chicken Salad and Crackers

S: 1/2 Bagel with RF Cream Cheese

D: Whole Wheat Good Foods Peanut Butter Cookie (Homemade at Good Foods Store, healthier than most but still not the BEST choice!)

S: Dipped Pretzels

Looking at this - I could have done much worse, but I could have done quite a bit better, too - especially on my dinner choice - but that cookie was GOOD.

I saw the most inspiring stories on the TV this a.m. The biggest loser guy - Eric somebody and this lady who was so overweight all her life and is now a psychotherapist and personal trainer for very obese people who want to change their lives. Inspiring stories - shows it can be done. Although the approaches, comments and overall presentations of each person were very different - I was struck by one common thing that both of them said - Changes on the inside lead to changes on the outside. If we are only concentrating on the outside - we won't be successful LONG TERM. Also - they both mentioned how important it our thought lives are. Basically - as we think - so we are.....I guess cliches get to be cliches because they are true! Something to think about today everyone. Hang in there! Love and Peace to us all!

L: Wheat Thins and Chicken Salad and Apple

S: one Hershey Kiss

D: Calamari with Marinara, Bread and Butter, 2 Bites of Bean Soup, Fillet Minon, tiny roasted bits of potato, Asparagus, TirMisu

The dinner was WONDERFUL. I was so full - I don't like that feeling, but it was wonderful. I was SURE that I had gone over 2500 calories, but I didn't eat all of everything - just "most" of everything and when I adjusted (only slightly) for the portions I think it came to 1723 calories - so even rounding up to 1823 - for that kind of meal - that's not SO bad????? I want to make sure I am not "fooling" myself so I evaluated it twice. I think this was an OK day for such an occasion. I will say that I did'nt have ANY alcohol (not a big sacrifice for me) but everyone else was was really rolling through the drinks. That adds so many calories and a headache sometimes the next day! I am not a Tee-totaler - but next to it. It's not that I am against drinking - it's just that I don't do it very well and learned that a long time ago so I steer clear except for an occasional beer or mixed drink. Ho-Hum.

Must exercise. Catch you all later.

Progress as of today: 16.4 lbs lost so far, only 5.6 lbs to go!
