I am on the 5th day of my 4th week and, thankfully, still dropping weight slowly, but steadily.  I'm trying not to think about how long it's going to take to reach my goal.

The weather has been pretty nice so I've been able to get outside for yard work and gardening.  The greenhouse is almost full of plants and I've pretty much caught up with transplanting the seedlings to bigger pots.  It's cold today.  I keep looking outside, hoping for the sun to come out.

My heart goes out to all of you who are having difficult working situations with a co-worker or boss.  A job should be rewarding, enjoyable, educational, fulfilling,.........  I took an early retirement, as well as a few others, because of unresolvable issues with co-workers and a supervisor, who was a real piece of work.  (Actually, he was "asked to resign" shortly after).  So I know something of what you're dealing with and I empathize. 

Hope everyone had a Happy Mother's Day.  Stick to your goals, think happy thoughts - it's hard to be sad when you wear a smile.

Sounds like you are accomplishing your goal. I was reading about it – and as long as you are doing it it said the same thing – try not to think about the end goal, just getting there is more the important thoughts and it sounds that’s the way you look at things.

Our weather is outrageous this week – summer weather like up to 90! Without the humidity! I wish I were on a paid vacation right now! haha – to spend here, in this wonderful weather at the beach.

Wow so already you filled the greenhouse up!? Show us! That’s so cool!

Thank you for your kind words about working in difficult situations or with difficult coworkers / bosses. I will never understand why people decide to act like jerks when instead they can be kind. But it’s not to figure out. So you are retired and doing wonderful work around your house. Nice. You sound like a motivated person. Did you gain the weight after retirement?

Thank you for your advice here to wear a smile despite it all….great advice! I’ll take it!

My weight gain started years ago. The pounds piled on with each pregnancy. I'd diet and gain and diet again, back and forth. Then after I turned 40 and it just wouldn't come off. I've actually been more active since retirement, at least in the summer being outside in the gardens. I'll hunt up some pictures to show you what I do outside........

I am glad that you could retire early. What a blessing! I wish I could, but I took time out of the workforce to be a stay-at-home mom, so I guess that's the trade off.

My one regret is that I couldn't be a stay-at-home mom. We fell on financially bad times and I had to work. Don't ever regret taking time to be with your children.

The Greenhouse is done!   It will be so nice to have fresh, chemical free, greens and veggies just steps away.  Pretty exciting!

Diet is going well, sticking to the calories, and getting in my steps.  I'm down 2 more pounds and the week isn't even over yet.

Progress as of today: 6 lbs lost so far, only 61 lbs to go!

One day into Week Three and going better than expected.

I met my calorie and step goals.  Chewed gum when tempted to eat.

New goals for Week Three:  Stay under 1,236 calories per day and increase steps per day to 3,500

Now, back outside to work on building the Greenhouse.  We finally have a nice day, although a bit nippy!

I'm building it on the side deck. It's only 6'x 8',has an aluminum frame and polycarbonate panels. I have modified it, a bit, bolted it to a 2x4 sill frame and then I'll tie it down to the deck using eye-bolts and strapping. I plan to take it apart, somewhat, and store it during the winter months. My only wish, though, is that the instructions were more detailed and had more pictures. Thank you for your support! I really appreciate it.

Gardening is my favorite hobby! I plan on using it from May through October harvest. I'll post a picture, if I can figure out how.

Three days in on my second week and seems to being going well. I've met my step and calorie goals each day, so far.

New goals for this week: increase steps to 3,000 per day and stay under 1,250 calories per day.

When I get a "craving" episode, I start reading DD blogs and get inspired again.  Thank you, everyone!

Mostly when i am roasting veggies i either brush a little olive oil or use a spray olive oil (less cal probably) and also a pinch of salt and black pepper. And then I either roast or broil the veggies. Any veggies can be done this way...400degrees F at least in the oven but def check online with directions per the type of veg you are cooking.

I enjoy cooked veg more than raw. Hardly any veg i eat anymore is raw, like i do eat raw ones, but most are cooked.

as per recipes to share, i am a lousy cook...so...most of what i make is not really that great...like i make turkey burgers and regular burgers and just add some spices in like cilantro, garlic, ginger powder. I'm still working o my cooking skills, actually.

One thing i've learned is not to be afraid of the oven as it works a lot better than stove top for many things!

Thank you for the tip on "compatibility view", it worked!

I have been averaging just under 1200 calories a day and it seems to be working.  I am down a solid 2 pounds! WOOHOO!

Also, I have managed at least 2000 steps per day, gatta' love that Fitbit.

I used this Basal Metabolic Rate Formula.  It's for women who get very little exercise (me).  655 + (4.35 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age in years) = BMR

Then multiply that BMR number x 1.2 and that equals the calories needed per day to keep weight stable.  I then subtracted 500 calories per day in order to lose 1 pound per week. (Being that a deficit of 3,500 calories is needed to lose 1 pound.)  My BMR was 1462.  So 1462 x 1.2 = 1754.4 calories per day is needed to maintain that weight.  So, I subtracted 500 calories per day leaving 1254 calories per day for my goal to lose 1 pound per week.  The additional pound lost can be attributed to getting in over 2000 steps per day, which seems maintainable for me.

I have the formula for men, if anyone is interested.

As I lose weight the BMR will change, so I will recalculate at the beginning of each week.  For instance, when my weight reaches 188, the new caloric goal will be 1233 calories per day.

Oh, I said "WHEN my weight reaches 188".  That sounds like optimism! I CAN do this!

Does anyone have a good low calorie, great tasting salad dressing recipe?

I believe in lifestyle change that can be committed to for life, no diets that are short term. Keep up the good work.

I actually don't make salad dressings but when i order stuff, i usually use the healthy olive oil and vinegar. If you want to seriously lighten it up, you can instead of olive oil use some olives as my coworker did and just use vinegar. It's rather acidic this way, but it's extreme low cal. I used to do that sometimes - vinegar has hardly any cal.

Also, i eat salads but instead of dressing, i top my salads with things like marinated veggies or roasted veggies. I top salads with veggies that are cooked / spiced / flavored. That is low cal and still flavors the salad leaves or cabbage that i use as my salad base.

Good suggestions! Not a fan of just the vinegar thing, but the marinated or roasted veggies sounds good. Can I get specifics as to what to use as a marinate and what spices you roast your veggies with? Since my calories are well defined, I think twice about the choice I make and try to stick with vitamin and nutrition packed meals. My veggie omelet is my favorite and I love my protein shake. These are changes that I could keep in my meal plan forever. I'm sprouting wheat berries to try a Sprout Bread recipe. I hope it tastes as good as it looks. Have any favorite recipes that you'd like to share? Thank you,your suggestions and support are very appreciated!

Calories are a problem with me, I am very short, 5 foot 1, and exercise is an issue. A low back spine injury leaves me unable to lift weights and knee and hip issues leave me only low impact exercise choices. HELP! I gain weight at 1500 calories a day.

Two days in and I've been able to keep my calories under 1000 a day. I got a step counter and my goal is 2,000 steps a day.

It's too low as you are not a sedentary old lady. Too low cal isn't maintainable for the long run and isn't a lifestyle change. You are not going to gain weight at 1500 a day but you need to be patient as the weight you put on took time and now it takes time to take it off - and usually takes more time to take off. You can do it - I support you.

I do gain at 1500 a day. I gain at 1400 a day. I maintain at 1200 a day. Sustained exercise isn't something that I can maintain, so calories have to be less. Right?

I challenge you to take back your statement that calories are a problem for you....they are a problem for many but they don't have to be. Be kind to yourself. And eat at least 1200 if not more like 1400. You WILL lose weight, even at 1400-1500. tust. me.

I've done that, for extended periods of time, more than a month. I gain weight if I eat more than 1200 calories a day. I maintain weight at 1200 calories a day. So, to lose weight, less calories! My metabolism is extremely efficient. One good thing, I would be the last to starve to death in a famine!

 DAY ONE!  Here I am, hoping this will be the REAL start to a healthier, slimmer, me. 

Every day, for as long as I can remember (years, and years), I have started the day with " Today I am not going to over eat!"  ... and I do.  At the end of that day of making very bad choices, I tell myself I will start again, tomorrow.  ...and the cycle repeats!

So I am going to say "Today, I will try, one hour at a time, or one minute at a time if needed, to make good choices, and eat only when I am hungry"!

9 am - Went for a 20 minute walk.  Now my knees and hips hurt.  I'm feeling my age, maybe it's too late to try to lose weight.

10 am - 2 Egg, onion, bell pepper, spinach, cheese, omelet (328 calories)

2 pm - Vegie and Beef Tostada (385 calories)

4 pm - snack, 1/4 cup Great Grains with 1/4 cup Skim Milk (110 calories)

My plan is to have a smoothie about 6 pm (200 calories), if I stick to that I won't have to edit this.  We'll see............

Welcome to DD...Innerpeace is right, it is NEVER too late to make a lifestyle change. Like you, I am counting calories. I didn't see many calories in your entry...I made the mistake of setting my daily calorie limit, too low (1200 or 1400 per day). I was losing weight--initially-- but weeks later, I hit a plateau and couldn't lose no matter what I did. I increased my calories to 1800-1900 per day. When I did this & drank more water, I lost weight EVERY week thereafter. I have no idea what your calorie intent is. I just wanted to share my experience and let you know what worked for me :)

I agree with the above. Like you said above, you have a HABIT of overeating even when you say you will not - you will have to rise above old habits and learn to create new ones - change your lifestyle.
