Looks like winter has set in :(

Progress as of today: 6.5 lbs lost so far, only 13.5 lbs to go!

sweetpea1977 on 11/13/2010:
:( at least it makes some pretty photos for us Southerners to enjoy! :)

moogy on 11/13/2010:
I can remember that it is not fun to live in a place where it snows. However, I prefer to snuggle up in front of a fire than sweat under an aircondiioner anyday. Plus, is there anything more beautiful than waking up to fresh snowfall.

Umpqua on 11/13/2010:
Beautiful! Apparently we had snow and ice while I was on vacation in Florida. We'll have our long, snowy season soon and I wouldn't trade it. I love the drastic seasons we have here in New England and I ski, so that's a bonus. Enjoy the white stuff!

Maria7 on 11/13/2010:
Thanks for sharing the photos with us...though they look very pretty (and Christmasy), I much preferr our 70's weather we've been having here in SC today...:-D

chidogs on 11/14/2010:
Wow, that is so pretty. Being a SoCal native, I drool over scenes of real weather. :) I know living in it can be annoying at times, but it is still soooooo pretty! And I agree with Moogy, I'd rather bundle up than sweat 24/7.

V on 11/14/2010:
I love your house legcramps :) Is that a pool/hot tub on your deck??? You have a very spacious yard too! As your personal landscaper/shoveler I will do my best to make your yard stand out from the rest on the block, free of charge of course(plane ticket) LOL have a good one ;)

I'm still feeling proud today :)

It's amazing that only a few days ago I was really having a rough time with my workouts and just... life in general.  Nothing seemed to be going my way.  My usual course of action when this happens, and the piece of advice I like to give when other people are emotionally drained and distressed - is when you're going to spiral downwards, if you ride it out eventually you'll come out of it.  This would normally take me a week or longer, but because of running buddy and the simple WILL to survive, I knocked that mood out of me within 12 hours by being PROUD of the fact that I was still moving, even when that age-old monster was trying to run me down.

I might be physically drained this week because i've been to the gym every single day, but i'm far from mentally drained.  Every day, I keep begging myself to 'just try', just go a little further, just one more step.  I am tired, but i'm too happy to even acknowledge it :)

So yesterday was another strength training day - it went well; we breezed through the exercises and even had some time leftover to do a few silly stretches - thankfully the gym was empty so we weren't making fools of ourselves (not overly, anyways. i think they have cameras set up in there.).  Tonight is supposed to be a 25 minute run, but of course I will ice my shins and do only as much as I can do, and finish out the minutes on the stationary bike.

I suggest that if you're feeling down today, WILL yourself to do some sweating.  Let it out.  Vent.  Be angry, disappointed, bitter, and anything else that's going on.  Exhaust your body so that it can begin to rejuvenate again.

Progress as of today: 6.5 lbs lost so far, only 13.5 lbs to go!

just42day on 11/12/2010:
I love your spirit! Thanks for sharing it! :)

moogy on 11/12/2010:
I am so glad that you have realised what we knew. That you have come a long way and have been doing some amazing exercise and pushing through lots of barriers, both physical and emotional. Well done to you.

hopingforhealth on 11/12/2010:
Good job. I'm glad you are powering through it. I don't listen to a ton of it, but there's a country music song (and I'm gonna butcher it) that says "if you're going through hell, just keep going, don't slow down...You might get out before the devil even knows you're there" and I like it, because sometimes when times are tough, you just have power through it. Way to not get discouraged and keep on working out!

Maria7 on 11/12/2010:
Real good on all those workouts! :-D

chidogs on 11/12/2010:
Wonderful advise. I will take it to heart. Glad you are doing so well, and finding the strength to keep going. Bravo!

I'm literally gushing with pride for myself today :)

I went back to the gym yesterday and running buddy and I decided that I would start the 25 minute run and when my shins started acting up again i'd get off the treadmill and finish it out on the stationary bike.  I made sure to ice my shins again beforehand.

I switched the display on the treadmill so that I couldn't see how many minutes had gone by, but I could see how far I was going in terms of distance.  I willed myself to look straight ahead at the wall, or outside the window, and I counted each song that blared through the large room.  Around song #4 I was starting to feel pretty winded, but my legs were good.  I was surprised that my lungs caught up to me before my shins did!  I toughed it out, and made it to song #6 before I took a look at where I was.  I had already run almost 1.5 miles!  I knew that I had only 1/2 a mile left to run, and I felt great!

I was able to finish out the run, and I even increased my pace for the last minute or so.  Just a shade under 2 miles in 25 minutes :)

Came home and iced my shins even though they weren't hurting.  I'm not taking any chances!!!

Today we're going to do some strength training, so should be running another mile or so and doing those wickedly evil leg exercises again.  Sounds like fun!

P.S. - I received a compliment the other day from someone I hadn't seen in about a month.  She said it looked like I was getting skinnier :)

Progress as of today: 6.5 lbs lost so far, only 13.5 lbs to go!

just42day on 11/11/2010:
Great job w/your exercise. You should be proud of yourself! Glad you received a well deserved compliment on your accomplishments! We can NEVER get enough of those. Hope the rest of your day is a good one.

loveray on 11/11/2010:
YAY for you!! have a wonderful day:) xo

sweetpea1977 on 11/11/2010:
Wow! Awesome work go!! Perhaps all that shin pain was pyschological...kidding of course! I think the way you used the treadmill display was a great idea as it kept you focused on the journey and not on the time for you to get to the finish line. :)

hollybelle on 11/11/2010:
You go, girl! Gush away! You deserve it!

V on 11/11/2010:
YES!!!!!!! I love reading entries such as this one! Well done :)

It's odd how we can't see our own weight loss as clearly as others. I'm sure you look fantastic and everybody is noticing. This was very inspirational - I may just go get the gazelle back from my son's room. Congrats.

I'm going to be in meetings all day today, so I thought i'd run here and post real quick about what I did yesterday...

I went straight home after work and crafted two ice packs for my shins.  Then I sat on the couch, elevated my legs, and applied ice while I played on facebook.  Then it was time to go to the gym.  I had decided I would workout on the stationary bike instead of running, but running buddy thought we should do a strength workout so that's what we did.  Which means, I did a whole lot yesterday and I really hurt good today :)

In Summary:

1 mile run - 11 minutes, leg squats and presses and lunges, ball bends, step ups, and three wierd gym machine thingys.  We were there for almost an hour and didn't even finish the whole workout.  Whew.  The running was split into 5 minutes, then 3 minutes twice - so it didn't feel like I was doing too much.

Got back home and iced my shins again and did some laundry.  I went to bed at a reasonable hour, but boy am I tired this morning!  And sore!

Progress as of today: 6.5 lbs lost so far, only 13.5 lbs to go!

tangalyn on 11/10/2010:

I'm feeling slightly disappointed in my performance at the gym yesterday.  I've mostly gotten over it, but there's a bit of negativity still lingering around me today so I need to re-evaluate my goals and figure out what course of action is best for me.

Let me explain:  I went to the gym with running buddy to do our 25 minute run.  I walked on the treadmill for a few minutes, then got off and stretched.  Started running at 4.7mph.  I had to stop after 10 minutes because my shins were HUR.TING.  It was awful.  They were burning and tingling and my ankles were sore.  I got off the treadmill and walked around a bit, did a few more stretches and got back on to start running again.  Stopped after just a few minutes.  I just couldn't do it.  My body was telling me to stop.  I was SO disappointed!  I walked out the 25 minutes until running buddy was finished her run, then left the gym and went home for half an hour before heading to a meeting.  By the time the half an hour was over, I felt fine and that disappointed me even more!  That I could feel so much better within half an hour of feeling that kind of pain!  You've no idea how badly I wanted to return to that gym and finish that run.  Of course, I knew that if I did, the pain would simply return and what I needed to do was let my legs recover.

It went so badly that I seriously considered scrapping the whole idea of running.  I don't feel that way today though.  I feel even more determined to figure out why i'm hitting that proverbial wall and find a way to break through it.  It might mean i'll have to regress and move backwards in the program a week or two.  I don't know.  I need to evaluate this and figure it out.

So, all in all, not the best day of my life yesterday :(

I am struggling today with the way I feel about myself, trying to take care of myself so that I can reach my goals.  It's patience that I need right now.  Patience and determination.  I know I can do it!

Progress as of today: 6.5 lbs lost so far, only 13.5 lbs to go!

getmebackto150 on 11/09/2010:
sorry about the disappointing run... I hear you, I really think that our bodies have good and bad days with running... Don't give up! Try running on a different day and I really think you will feel better...:)

just42day on 11/09/2010:
Sorry about your running disappointment. Don't be so hard on yourself; if you hurt, you hurt. Your body's talking to you. Perhaps you can find some other exercise in the meantime. No need to make yourself miserable when you're trying to do something good for yourself. Hang in there! :0)

just42day on 11/09/2010:
Ironic that your name is legcramps (sorry)

biscottibody59 on 11/09/2010:
Shoes--that's usually been the culprit when I've had shin issues. They're either worn out or the heel portion isn't high enough in relation to the toe portion. Don't know if you've ever been fitted in a running shoe specialty store, but it's worth the time/effort/price if you want to be a healthy runner.

Others may disagree, but I don't think pain and running/jogging EVER go hand in hand. EVER! It means you're doing too much, you're out of shape cardio- or strength-wise or your shoes are shot or don't fit your gait.

Hope you sort it out!

chidogs on 11/09/2010:
Sorry about the running problem. I agree with biscottibody, if there is pain then there is something going on. You can't force that. Hopefully it will take care of itself, but better not to force the issue. Take care.

moogy on 11/09/2010:
I am thinking that maybe your legs are just not cut out for running, how about speed walking, I wonder if that would help. It is almost running but not quite. Or maybe just power walking. Please don't feel you have failed, you haven't, your legs just seem to be giving you a message and it's not the kind of thing you can ignore. Chin up, you are doing well.

hopingforhealth on 11/09/2010:
Yikes, that sounds frustrating! I agree with biscottibody that shoes could be an issue. I'm not much of a runner, but I have friends who have had issues with that. Maybe you should try taking a day off between runs more often? You can still workout, but maybe try something different, like a walk, or dancing or aerobics? I hope the "legcramps" settle themselves out ok!

It was a really nice weekend, beautiful weather - almost all our snow melted away!

On Saturday morning, running buddy and I did our 25 minute run.  It was really difficult and I felt like quitting a lot.  But I didn't, and once it was over I felt really good about accomplishing it!  So, we're officially up to 25 minute runs now!  For me, that's about 2 miles, give or take.  Mostly take :)

We were going to do strength training on Sunday, but my body was beat from Saturday's workout and I just needed a day off.  Ironically enough, once it was decided to take a rest day, I got my butt off the couch and did 2 hours of much needed yardwork.  It was actually sort of fun, and I broke a sweat too :)  I still have more to do before the snow flies again, so hopefully i'll be able to fit it in this week sometime.

Tonight is another 25 minute run, so i'm trying hard to psyche myself up for it.  I will continue at the same pace in hopes that perhaps tonight it will feel a little easier.

I can't believe I can't even taste the spinach in those green smoothies.  What a great way to get the veggies in.  I had a big serving of smoothie for supper last night :)

Progress as of today: 6.5 lbs lost so far, only 13.5 lbs to go!

Aren't those spinach smoothies awesome? Im so glad loveray introduced us to them!! :)

just42day on 11/08/2010:
Great job with all your running and the yardwork certainly counts as exercise too! :)

lifestylechange on 11/08/2010:
i can see where you are coming from with your thoughts on that quote...i didn't even think of it that way. i definitely don't interpret it that way though...when i heard it, it meant to me, that the gross, processed fast food would not taste as good as it would feel if i were to not eat it...in my mind set that is... i definitely did not mean to offend anyone though and i apologize that people may think of it that way... :)

loveray on 11/08/2010:
i know! i wish it was for a week...i am trying to convince our meditation instructor for do it for a longer period of time soon. awesome job on the running - and SO glad you love the green smoothies:) they are magic!

V on 11/08/2010:
I always love reading your posts because you are so descriptive about your runs...I am not supposed to run anymore because knee, gymnastics did a number on them :( That was by far my favorite form of exercise

moogy on 11/08/2010:
You must find that you have a lot more energy just for normal everyday things now that you have gotten your stamina up. Good for you,.

hopingforhealth on 11/08/2010:
25 minutes is awesome! I find your running seriously inspirational. Even during times in my life where I have been pretty "fit," I've been a rotten runner. Seeing you improve with all your hard work makes me feel like one day (though not today) I could be one too :)

legcramps - Friday Nov 05, 2010

Weight: 168.5

Ah, Friday!  All in the same breath, it feels like this week has both flown by and crawled along.  So glad it's Friday and I have no plans for the weekend besides what i've chosen to do!  Yay!

I made it through the running workout last night!  It consisted of a 10 minute run, 3 minute walk, and 10 minute run.  This is the one I failed to complete on Tuesday, but after a day of rest my legs were better able to carry my weight on the treadmill :0 and I managed to finish without too much hassle.  At one point, I did feel like stopping; my left foot was losing feeling and my shins were starting to really hurt.  But I struggled through with the help of RB and sheer determination.  Tonight I think I will take the dog for a walk, do some yoga, and ice my shins!

Tomorrow morning RB and I will be attempting to complete a 25 minute run.  And on Sunday the strength training will begin.

Yesterday's Eats - oatmeal, ham sandwich with baked brussel sprouts, whole wheat pasta with lean ground beef and cheesy pasta sauce, mocha, water, hot chocolate during movie night with friends :)

A big calorie day, but i'm okay with that so long as it gives me the energy I require to continue to get those workouts in.

Progress as of today: 6.5 lbs lost so far, only 13.5 lbs to go!

legcramps - Thursday Nov 04, 2010

Weight: 168.5

After my insight into human behaviour on Tuesday ;) and after a couple of things happened at work yesterday (which I will have to tell you about another day), I feel like a lot of the weight of the world has been released from my shoulders.

I should have already learned that when in the midst of turmoil, we often don't even realize we are there until we are either pulled out of it, or forced to stand up to it.  I'm quite surprised that my shoulders haven't been lodging near my ears for the past few months.  Regardless, i've had to do some "standing up" lately, and since hindsight is 20/20 i've noticed that i'd been hanging onto some ideas and efforts that are not mine.  Mine, but not MINE.

Does that make sense?!  For example, my mother would have a great amount of influence in my life seeing as she raised me and all that.  Some of her values and motivations have become mine.  But they're not MINE.

I'm not saying i'm dropping everything and am going on a sabbatical to figure out what it is I want to do.  And i'm not saying it all has to do with my mother - she is simply an example.  Rather, i'd love to stop and think about the things that I do sometimes, and decipher whether i'm doing these things for me or for some other reason or purpose.  I like to make people happy.  That will never change.  But perhaps learning to have patience with my own journey in life will help me to be truly helpful in someone else's life.

I went for a long walk with the dog yesterday, then added 30 minutes of yoga afterwards.  I'll be running tonight at the gym - wish me luck with the last interval session of the program!!

Progress as of today: 6.5 lbs lost so far, only 13.5 lbs to go!

2luvself on 11/04/2010:
Those are some wise words. Sometimes we have to go outside ourselves and look inwards to find out what is truly the right path for us. Good luck with your journey. Sometimes it can be hard and you might not like what you find some of the time but this journey is one that is always worth exploring in the end.

V on 11/04/2010:
Funny that Moogy and I were speaking about something very similar on her post last night! :) Good luck tonight! Not that you need it!

Maria7 on 11/04/2010:
Sounds like you're going through a time of introspection. That is always good and something everyone needs to do from time to time. :-D

moogy on 11/04/2010:
It is always a good thing to think about why we do the things we do. Motivation is always a key in how we live our lives. If you can work out where your's is coming from it will help you understand yourself and decide if you want to change your behaviour. Just because your mom did it one way doesn't mean that it works for you of course, it doesn't mean it is bad either. (I have to stick up for the mom's):)

nita51 on 11/05/2010:
Hi Legcramps, Your post was so insightful and really hit home for me as well. Take Care of yourself. You are a very special and loving person, Wishing you the desires of your heart, Take Care. :) :) :)

chidogs on 11/05/2010:
That is very true! And I never thought of it that way. Thank you for a eye opening message. You take care and good luck with your efforts.

legcramps - Wednesday Nov 03, 2010

Weight: 168.5

I had a breakthrough yesterday, but let me start at the beginning:

My mind was set on heading to the gym at 6pm yesterday evening to go for a run.  This run was to be the last interval run of the program.  From then on afterwards, I would be running consecutive minutes without any walk breaks.  RB (Running Buddy) texted me at 5, saying she wouldn't be able to make it to the gym as she had to work late.  I was very sorry she wouldn't be there, because a) it was our last interval run and something to be celebrated! and b) i'm never as motivated as when we're running together.  But I suited up and headed for the gym anyways, intent on getting this workout over with.

I felt heavy during the warm-up walk and started to doubt my abilities.  Three other girls were there, and they were running and running and running away and they intimidated me.  I started out strong anyways; I really wanted to increase my pace and with two easy 10 minute runs, I thought it would be no problem.

Problem:  My legs were beat.  b.e.a.t.  I had no issue whatsoever with my cardio - although I was sweating like there was no tomorrow, my breathing was regular and I doubt my heartrate went much over 165.  I just couldn't swing one foot in front of the other.

So I slowed down, and that didn't work.  So I sped up, and that didn't work.  I finally finished the first 10 minute run, and took my pace down to a walk for 3 minutes.  My legs did not recover.  When it came time to run again, I did so for 2 minutes, then had to stop.  Then a minute, then stopped.  Start.  Stop.  Over and over until I finally reached the end of the workout.  I hobbled out of the building with the shame of failure hanging onto my shirt tails.

Solution:  When I got home, I iced my shins for a long time.  I took a nice warm bath, and thought about my predicament.  Was it just an off day?  Do I need to add strength training?  Was it too much, too soon?  And here's where the breakthrough came to me.  I realized it wasn't always about having a great workout.  I figured out that it was okay to fail once in a while because that is what brings us closer to our goals - it's what motivates us and gives us determination to follow through.  I knew I could bounce back from this and move on, try again.

I've never been the type to be a positive influence in my own life.  I've berated myself constantly for not meeting my own expectations.  But I think the past year has taught me a very valuable lesson that I don't know I truly believed before:  I can do anything in the world I set my mind to.

I've set my mind to trying the run again on Thursday evening.  I will also be starting some strength training exercises.  If you know of any, please forward them to me.  And tonight, I will be doing some yoga.  Namaste my friends :)  Stay Strong.

Progress as of today: 6.5 lbs lost so far, only 13.5 lbs to go!

WOOO love breakthrough entries. this is the kind of self-awareness that is achieved by listening intently within and being loving enough toward yourself to accept anything that comes. So excited for you!

chidogs on 11/03/2010:
Wise words. Good for you. And thanks for sharing the insight.

Umpqua on 11/03/2010:
Very inspirational entry! But you knew that about yourself before, right? Your nick on here is legcramps, afterall, and you've been on here for years keeping up the good fight. I think you have always believed in your abilities but now you have the confidence that comes from within. I've been very emotional this week and you're making me weepy, in a good way. Have a wonderful evening!

moogy on 11/03/2010:
It is the striving that counts legcramps. You have done so well with your running, if only our bodies were machines we could be predictable everyday. But wouldn't that be boring. You are wonderful.

That is an amazing a-ha moment! I'm so happy for you! It just matters that you keep trying, not that you are perfect and it is so hard to remember that. I struggle with being hard on myself too. Seriously, good for you!

That was pretty deep legcramps! Alot of times we overlook our breakthrough moment(or chose not to see or hear it) happy that you didn't ignore it!!!! Well done :)

Weight: 168.5

I'm happy to report that I ran almost 28 miles last month!  I'm hoping to better this number for the month of November...

I made it to the gym last night for a run.  It was a lot harder than usual, i'm not sure if it's because I took two days off or because of my lack of water intake over the weekend.  I completed it though, so that's good.  Hopefully tonight's workout will be easier!

Eats for yesterday:  Oatmeal, coffee, water, chili, ham sandwich, and then I was a snackaholic during a movie I watched with a friend.  We also experimented with two different types of slushie drinks - one with orange juice and one with coffee.  Both were very good!

P.S. - Ham Sandwiches.  Yum.  Especially when you haven't eaten bread in. like. forever.

P.S.S. - Ham Sandwiches - flax bread, pressed garlic and caesar dressing, mustard, spinach leaves, roast ham.  Yum.

Do you know what i'm eating for lunch today?  Here's a hint:  Yum.

wow, great! 28 miles, a lot! :) I think exercise is sometimes harder, I notice the same at tennis. It just has to do with something I haven't been able to figure out/identify yet!

hahaha, YUM! That ham sandwich does sound delicious and more exciting that the typical (boring) ham sandwich.

Great job on the running! You ran over a marathon in one month. Thats incredible!!

Loveray posted a bunch of green smoothie recipes in the forums. I actually came up with a bunch while the site was down. I'll post my concoctions in the comments section of loveray's recipe post. Anyway, let me know what you think of the smoothies. They are an easy way to get your fruits and a veggie in for the day!
