Didn't mean to be absent for so long. Life has been busy  with all of my day to day activities. Also trying to sort out some of my things for our move back home .

I haven't been doing the best in the eating department. Just not being on track- or being on track until late afternoon and then eating silly stuff- baked doritos for instance... I was blaming some recent medication on gaining a couple of pounds( not recorded  here as I am determind to get rid of them!) but I just have been a bit to lax. So need to get back on track !

Exercise continues to be good. Today lots of walking ,yesterday was a gym day & tomorrow will get to the gym.

I had mentioned my tests on my heart health and  ( damn it sucks to get old!) it does appear that I have a small amount of plaque on some of my arteries. So back on statins- I had been prescribed statins by my local Dr but then stopped when I went for my tests because I was getting leg cramps. The latest medication seems to have no side effects- except that I wanted to pin weight gain on them but as it turns out only 2 % of people have weight gain. So at least I know what is going on .

Going to Australia next Wed. Still haven't heard from Moogy so probably not a good time for her. But would love to get together in Sydney ( I think that's where she's from). We have a super trip planned including going to the Great Barrier Reef, Uluru and Margaret River.

Then planning our move back to the states. But have no moving date yet. Right. I might be in denial... But my husband has been away for the last week so waiting for him to return to make that decision. I'm going t miss alot people here. Starting to say my god-byes. Decided  to make this week & next my last days for activities.

Going to catch up with some posts.

Good that you're continuing to workout. You'll get back on track with food, it's only giving up that's bad. :)

Would be nice if you could meet up with Moogy. I hope to meet up with her when we go again but that won't be until 2014. The Great Barrier Reef is on our agenda for next trip as well as we've never been.

It's so hard to leave a place you've come to love. I felt that with Uganda - hard to leave but on the other hand, happy to go home.

My dad is on statins too. It is a bummber when you are trying to get healthy to feel tied to pills but they are helpful. I am a vegetarian and find that it helps me quite a bit with my cholesterol. I didn't just drop meat all at once, I phased it out. That may help you. Please understand I am not recommending you stop the statins but it could help you get off of them sooner.

Hi all,

Nothing really new to report. Yesterday I played golf with my 9 hole group and really enjoyed it. That's one reason it will be hard to leave here- just really getting to know people . But that was the good news, then I just got into snacking later in the day. Nothing terrible but these little bits add up. I should just not have nuts in the house, or just have plain almonds. Anyway... Meals were fine- cheerios w lf milk, lunch out with my husband was vietnamese minced chicken with lots of yummy herbs, just a little sticky rice , one scoop of ice cream ( it was a set lunch!) dinner small piece of salmon with veg. small potato and an orange But then too many smoked almonds & 2 glasses of wine, and then small bag of chocolate candy - seriously what was I thinking?! I know not thinking.

We are still stressed out because HR still hasn't given my husband the paperwork for his job so that we know the details of our departure date, etc... Have to be patient they say...

Today getting my nails done soon. Will get to the gym later in the afternoon which is a good time of day as I will probably be the only person there. Have been doing 20 min treadmill, 10-15 on elliptical and 10 min with weights and stretching in between.

Going to try to be thoughtful about my eating today- will have a salad for lunch and still in planning stage for dinner, but going to limit my snacks to carrots, an apple and yogurt.

RYC: I looked up some facts just to be sure I was going to give you things straight. A CT scan of the heart is actually less invasive than some of the other tests. I can tell you from what I have seen in medical testing situations that if there was anything really life-threatening and volatile, they would have had you stay at the hospital. A few years ago my dad went in for a stress test and they found some issues and it is pretty standard to call the doc immediately and get an order to keep you there or have you come right back. My dad was told to get back to the hospital immediately and they had him on a monitor and in surgery the next day. That is when your regular doctor isn't doing the test. From what you said, and not knowing any of your background, it is my opinion that it was your doc doing the test and he probably didn't see anything huge, if he did see anything and just wants the extra day or two to recheck his data by looking at the slides again and chart the workup properly. That is pretty standard. Insurance companies don't like to pay for anything they don't have to and they will kick things back over and over until it is done properly. It is pretty amazing how much they can see with these tests. They are 1mm slices of the heart moving upward which gives them a full view of any plaque or other issues. As I said before. It is standard to do a quick once through during and right after the test to be sure there is nothing of immediate concern. I hope that gives you some comfort. As for the husband's job, we have been in limbo for a while here and I know that just adds to the stress. Just keep telling yourself, "Everything for a reason.":-)

Thanks for all of the comments on my move home and thoughts on vegetarian diet. Yesterday was interesting- I have now had many tests on my heart , all to see if I have any plaque in my arteries. All interesting tests & not so well explained here prior to doing the test. Like the test where they put dye in my vein (?!) & then did a scan on my heart. And all along I'm watching my heart rate go from in the 50's to 70's, like that's not enough to make me anxious & then they ask me if I'm anxious and then give me a shot to "stabalize my heart rate". Ok again, what the heck is going on, is this normal or what? No good explanation. But I did survive and next week I'll get the results fro Dr. Koo who is very good at explaining in lay person's terms.

Otherwise , not as good on the eating- as yesterday I had to fast for the tests & then ate a snack & then a large salad for dinner before seeing a show with a friend.( and a couple of glasses of wine but those were necessary after those bloody tests) Today cheerios, my breakfast of choice recently, and then a mushroom & mozzarella sandwich at Starbuck's.  Will have a healthier dinner- maybe fish & some steamed vegetables.

Now going to the gym after reading some posts.

If you tell me the name of the test, I can tell you just about anything you need to know. It sounds normal though. I am a nurse and have worked quite a bit in cardio. I can tell you that we consider 50's below normal and anytime there is any kind of stress, it is normal for our heart rate to jump. The stress doesn't have to even be bad, just soemthing that gets us going. I have seen people who sleep with their heart rate in the 50's and as soon as they wake up, it is back in the 70's. If you are talking about cardiac catheterization, you remember quite a bit. I am used to people getting something to make them forget, an amnesic. If you are talking about a thalium stress test, the medication they give you is what makes the heart rate go up. He could have been referring to something to relax you after he was done. I hope that helps. Feel free to leave a comment or email me if you want more info but keep in mind, I wasn't there so you are just getting background theories.

My first question would be why are they doing all this? Did you present with chest pain? There's cautious and there's money-grubbing, to put it very crudely. Please, without symptoms, ask lots of questions before they actually tell you you need a catheterization (while you're on the table and they give you no choice).

Lots of people end up with unnecessary heart caths because they have good insurance. I don't think it's just because someone is in a foreign country, because it happens here too.

Newsflash: Everyone has plaque in their arteries.

Things are getting" sorted out" here as the Brits say. Right now I'd say that we should leave here around the middle of October and have a good length of time to travel on Australia on the way back.

It has been disappointing to have to change my plans for working with the new docents at the museum. I was back &forth about starting as a Team Leader and in the end I thought it better for the new person to start from the beginning and it would be one thing off of my plate as I try to figure out what needs to get done between now & departure date. I did decide to continue with choir & play golf when I can & maybe even read the book for the next book group. And going home is not so bad after all.

Weight wise I'm holding my own despite a good many indulgences and mindless eating. Exercise has been ok, not great but not bad either.

Today I went to a cardiologist to check out my high cholesterol . I had an ekg, bothwith  exerciise and resting and an echocardiagram ( Spelling?) and tomorrow I will have some kind of cat scan. I did start taking a statin which is making me feel yucky with leg cramps at night which by the way doesn't help  the sleep issue. I like the Dr, he doedn't believe in taking medication unless it's necessary. So far he doesn't see any problems so we'll see.

Sorry you've leaving sooner than you wanted to. Is there a different cholesterol med you can take? I know some in my family take them and one quit because of side effects.

RYC: yea, I've always had itchy feet and have travelled a lot, but still want to see more! Love Australia - we'll go back in 2014.

I don't want to mention it, but I will just this once. If the statin side effects become unbearable, do continue to try the no-fat added, plant-based way of eating. Lots of people do the diet, take statins and their chol comes down as they change their diet over time. Then they've given themselves the chance to change things in their own time and either lower the statin dose or eventually eliminate it.

There's the one you mentioned earlier, Fuhrman, though I'm not all that familiar with him. Then there are about six others that tweak things a bit. So let me know if you want any suggestions--very gentle ones.

I'm definitely not 100% the way I'd like to be, but I have to tell you those 8 days back in January that I did the no-added fat, plant-based thing full force, I felt great and it didn't take long to lose the taste for fat. (I just have allowed too many distractions, but things are looking up for me to give it a go once again.)

Anyway, do tell me if I'm being a pest. You know I wish you well--through all these transitions and everything! Take care!

I hope your day goes well and r/t biscottibody's comments, the plant based diet has really been helpful for some of my patients. It may be too strict for you and not everyone can give up meat, so just something to think about. I have had patients that just cut out meat all but once a day or every other day and it really helps.

I haven't disappeared entirely, just moved back to the other side of the world.

Had a good trip back, smooth flying and got some sleep so arrived in good shape.

After a few days back, lost the wieght gained in travel-- never sure how that happens but then think back to the nuts on the plane, glasses of wine & no exercise for a couple of days .

Life here is a little unsettled- on arrival my husband tells me that his work here is coming to an end & that he will be resigning soon. Ok, so I just arrive with plans & commitments & now I have to start arranging to move back?  Now it's not so certain...trouble here that I can't go into online. Let's just say that it is stressful and I've been snacking most of the day.  I'm putting an end to that though.

I have been out walking, but today no exercise. Planning to walk when its cooler out.

I'll catch up with you all. Hope life is treating you well.

Easy to snack when stressed, we ALL do it or have done it. Going for a good long walk is a good idea.

Oh, I feel for you... we make an effort to make new friends and all too soon we have to leave everything behind... too sad. I hope things get resolved and you find out what's happening. It's good to know beforehand what comes next. In my case, we have 4 more years here and then he retires. We don't know where, yet. We are building a house near Seattle, so I think that's where we are going to end up at.

I'm going to join a club and I'm sure they'll have plenty of activities. It's just a matter of time I'll get settled.

RYC: I used some tranquilizers I was prescribed from an ER visit--twice. I'd never taken anything like that in my life. WHOA--knowing how easy it is to become dependent on these things--they don't call it addiction--I was reluctant. I knew that they're one of the most difficult things to get off of once you are entrenched with daily use and then over time you need a bigger dose. I was reluctant to take a dose even in the ER. (The ER prescription was to take one of these daily--not for sleep. But that's how I reacted to them--I wanted to sleep.)

So dr biscottibody59 acted accordingly--haha--other than the dose I got in the ER, I ended up only taking them for sleep. I took a half-pill on two different occasions a couple weeks apart after that ER visit--about two years ago. They worked like a charm. Long story, but that's been it for my foray into "sleep aids." I'm just grateful every day (and night) that I was able to get the sleep apnea diagnosis and that I took to CPAP therapy like a duck to water--haha!

Well,maintaining at posted weight but now sure if I'll get lower while in the next few days. I've been staying with the vegetarian plan but now will start  back on  chicken & fish for dinner.

Sleep continues to be an issue for me & it does interfere with my life. This morning I was awake at 4, yesterday at 5, day before at 6. Then I'm tired during the day & nap occasionally. I've tried time released melatonin & that will work one day & then not the next. It is a pain & now I wonder If I should just take a sleep aid & be done with it. I was trying to find a cause for my tiredness but in the end I think it's just that I'm not getting enough sleep. My father had the same problem & he would be up early & go out walking before dawn. People would report seeing him out walking in the middle of the road! Please don't let that happen to me!!  I suppose I could try  the sleep study thing. I know that I'm not the only person with this problem. Any ideas?

I'm doing well with exercise. Yesterday went to the gym for an hour of aerobic exercise. Trying to do some weight exercise or aerobic exercise at least 4- 5 days a week.

Today- shopping with my granddaughter, lunch with a friend & trying to finish a rug hooking project that I put on hold 2 years ago.

If you find the treasured answer for the sleep problem PLEASE let me know! I had suffered with it for 3 or 4 years and then it suddenly stopped when I cut the sugar and white flour out of my diet. I have slept all night since January, and then last week, it's back again. I was up last night at 2, 3, 4 and 5. I finally hit a deep sleep when the alarm went off at 5:30. So I am tired today. They say you burn more calories when you sleep longer periods, but I thought I figured it out, but now I'm fighting it again. My dad always was an early riser too. Have you removed caffeine from evening time? Just the first of many suggestions. Hope you get some rest this weekend!

Sleep seems to be an issue for so many people. You may want to look at things like caffeine intake during the day, and cut it off early afternoon so it doesn't affect sleeping later. Check your environment - like a cool, dark room, no lights/TV that would interfere with sleeping. When I've had issues, I would take tylenol or advil PM that has a sleep aid, and that seemed to work to get a good nights rest. You could try prescription meds like Ambien, but I've heard of stories of strange behavior while on that medication (my sister, for one. She no longer takes it). If all else fails, you may want to consult a doctor.

Have a good weekend, and hopefully you can get some quality rest.

Ha! I'm your sleep person--CPAP therapy is my ONLY sleep drug and my constant companion (at least for the about one-third of my life spent sleeping). Everyone deserves a GREAT night's sleep and if you're not getting it, first I feel for ya' :: second you need to tell your dr and go from there. (Though most drs need a 2x4 up the side of the head because they don't really think women suffer from sleep disorders.)

Good going getting back to posted wt BTW--woo-hoo!

RYC: You might not know--most people who have sleep apnea don't know when it wakes them up, and it can happen many times over an hour or night--actually waking someone up, but more likely just mildly arousing them from sleep while they catch their breath completely unconsciously. You'd think you'd realize it, but it's one of those things.

I had a certain kind of wake-up every night (for a number of years actually) and it sort of disturbed me, but over time I just began to chalk it up to stress and aging--I was only in my mid-40s when I first started to notice it--yikes! (I don't have a trace of it now with CPAP.) A bunch of other things piled on with perimenopause--heart arrhythmias while awake and it turns out while asleep as well. We adapt as humans so easily it seems.

I would suggest that you sort of casually ask your husband or perhaps one of your older grandchildren (when they're around) to hang around while you're napping or for your husband to kind of pay attention to your sleep. (Kinda boring to watch someone sleep.) Again, if it's very mild sleep apnea, you or your husband may have just gotten used to it when it happens.

I don't mean to take up any more space here on your diary, but I thought of one other thing--it has to do with singing. There haven't been any studies that I could find, but there has been some research on didgeridoo playing re: sleep apnea.

I remember you were in a choir (when you were overseas) and maybe the break from that has changed your throat muscles enough to make a difference now. Just a thought.

At any rate, below is a web addy for a piece by Dr Park (sleep specialist). I've listened to several of his podcasts in the last couple of years. He also interviewed a person who has a program of exercises to strengthen the throat muscles. Who knew?

Big day- one lb down! This mostly vegetarian diet is working.

For the last week I've been having cereal for breakfast & salads for lunch & dinner & about 4 fruits. That has been my version of the Eat to Live diet. I have had a little meat, maybe 2 oz of steak yesterday & a few bites of steak one other day.The main thing is that I've  been satisfied - the salads have filled me up & the fruit satisfies my sweet tooth. Oh, also had some wine most days.

Today my husband leaves & then 9 days more for me. This is when I get a bit frantic wondering what I may have forgotten to do - like order an oil delivery which almost got by me. And right now it looks like we won't be back until next spring or summer.

Wed I will go to NJ to visit my daughter & grandchildren & my new granddog! Can't wait to see the new little puppy.

Now I can actually picture getting below 170 & that is something to work for. So the next 8 days will be easy to follow this vegetarian diet. Maybe I can get the scale to move down another lb.

It always surprises me when I can change my habits. Yesterday I had two big salads, one I made so was completely vegetarian, the other was at a restaurant & not completely vegetarian. No sweets, carbs were just fruit & vegetables. And I felt satisfied and not deprived. It may be that I'm thinking I'll do this short term. In the long term I'm planning to limit my meat portions and  eat more vegetables and fruits. Stay tuned...Hoping to keep with that idea. Just now a 1/2 lb from posted weight .

Now in my counting down phase of being home & making my list of what I need to do & schedule to be able to leave the house in good order.

Was going to go to the gym but changed my plan to go for a long walk on this beautiful and now cool day.

good plans. but in general, i think meats are important, or, more importantly, proteins are important. I try to get protein at every meal, whether it be naturally like through milk, yogurt, tofu, eggs, chicken, fish...or unnaturally haha like protein shakes and bars. either way, protein fills me up for longer, so i highly recommend keeping it in your diet. veggies are also very important, like you say. many days, i eat much more than the 3-5 recommeneded veggie servings.

Hey there! Fuhrman is featured in two films that were available to watch for free on hulu.com--last time I checked. One is "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" and the other is "Chowdown." The latter is a little more comprehensive following several people going plant-based. I've seen both. Also another plant-based diet film is "Forks Over Knives." I recommend all three to anyone just for info.

You know, there was a time years ago that I just was not into salads...but over the years, I have come to REALLY enjoy eating them...how about that???

Hi all,

I have a day to myself- or at least a good part of the day - I'll be picking up my grandchildren later this afternoon and will have them for a few hours. So started the day with an hour bike ride. I thought I was in better shape but as this is the first time I've been out on the bike, I really felt it in my knees.

To get back to posted weight- I've been up by as much as 4 lbs!- I'm adapting a mostly vegetable diet. So it's just been a few days but it is working and I should be able to get below my posted weight before I leave on the 29th. I read the Joel Furhman book, Eat to Live, and it makes so much sense. Not following it exactly but trying to eat mostly vegetables and fruit. Stay tuned- I'm very positive now and will try to continue.

Yesterday was the last of the planned days of visiting. I had people for lunch and dinner yesterday. I made panini for lunch but just had a salad and then had steak with corn and green beans and just had a very small piece of steak. So it is possible to say no and I need to practice to say no more often. Although it is easier when I'm in my own home.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Progress as of today: 17 lbs lost so far, only 14 lbs to go!

We have been visiting and having people visiting with us constantly to the point that I  am cranky about it. I am talked out about - well, everything. Turns out that I like to have some time to myself.

And guess what- with the visiting has come food and drink . I'm still sticking with my goal of leaving lighter than when I arrived. Exercise has not been as consistent because of our schedule. Did take a good walk today & then played golf.

And so it continues- I leave today for NH and the for VT visiting friends. Back on Saturday & then  the visits taper off.

Try to get on DD more next week.

It's tough to do well when visiting! I like lots of time to myself as well. Love company but it can get to be too much.

Yea, single track roads. Lots of people don't like them - until you get used to them.
