Not sure where the time goes , you'd think I'd have plenty of time to update here. I guess I'm just not in a good routine.

So I did read parts of the glycemic diet which was not a new concept for me but was good to review. I'm not really there yet- not ready to embrace the entire concept. I like to take some ideas from various plans. To follow the glycemic diet entirely would be quite a change for me. Went to see James Taylor which was a wonderful concert.

Life has been good, although I do miss having my husband here. He'll be here in 3 weeks. Have been busy with friends and doing things around the house & yard. Also spent some time with grandchildren and will have 2 of my grandchildren here tonight & then for the next few days. On Monday I saw James Taylor in concert which was great.

I've been to LA Fitness for exercise classes- not as often as I had hoped but now twice this week for the Bodyworks plus abs class which is alot of hand weights plus ab exercises. I just don't do squats or lunges on my own & I really flunked the plank ! But a good workout & I was able to keep up which I felt good about- except for holding the plank pose!

I have to say that I have not been good about counting calories in the last 2 weeks. I'm going back to using my little notebook and going to look at what I did last summer.

Hope everyone is well.

Progress as of today: 17 lbs lost so far, only 14 lbs to go!

Good to see posts from you! So excited that you got to meet Umpqua. She is a real sweetheart. Love her! :)

Way to go on the LAF classes. As for the troubling moves, the instructor should let you modify the moves. Don't go down very low in your squats and lunges and do the planks as long as you can before dropping to your knees for the rest of the time.

grannyannie on 07/05/2012:
Hang in there, you're workouts will improve. Would have liked a James Taylor concert! Must miss your hubby. Keeping busy is a good idea.

Umpqua on 07/05/2012:
Good advice from Sweetpea about modifying, you can definitely go to your knees on the plank pose and still get benefits from it. I'm sure James Taylor put on a great show!

V on 07/05/2012:
Hello there :) The girls are right about modifying plank.. Sorry that you are missing your hubby, it must be tough <3 I hope you had a good day my friend!

V on 07/05/2012:
Oh RYC it really isn't fun to be around obnoxious drunks :( LOL

moogy on 07/05/2012:
So James Taylor must of been good, you went to see him twice!! LOL Nice to spend time with the grandchildren. Good job with keeping up with the class, I am sure you hold a branch very well. After all who wants to be a plank when a branch is so much more natural?? LOL

Hello........anyone there:) It's only meee:) Checking in with you to see how you are going. How are you going?

Sorry for the long  absence- I was at my daughter's house Mon & Tues & then lost internet .

It was so good to meet Umpqua yesterday. We had been talking on DD about meeting when I got back from Singapore & set the date for a walk along the river. She has been such a great support for me over the last year & so it was nice to meet her in person. She is interesting and interested- a good listener and just a sweet and beautiful person.

And seriously aren't we just blessed to have such a wonderful supportive network of DD friends??

As far as my progress? Not great but I did just have 10 oz  of Mamma Chia, Pomegranate Mint . Overpriced but it says it will give me Vitality, Energy and Strength. I just came from Whole Foods which I just love, it's like eye candy for me- just to walk through the fresh fruits and vegetables, and then over to the gelato aisle for a sample.....

OK i'm taking out my Idiot's Guide to the Glycemic Index Diet to give me some inspiration. Will report back with my plan for the summer.

Hope you all have a wonderful wekend!

Yes, I try to watch out for the glycemic level in foods, too...don't want to do too many high-carbs... Hope you are having a good day. :-)

hollybelle on 06/29/2012:
I am so happy you and Umpqua got to meet. I had the pleasure in October of 2010 in Georgia and I TOTALLY agree with everything you said about her. You know, I am so grateful for our supportive on-line community here. It's really unique, I think. We are all lucky to be part of it. I love the name of that thing you just had above - Mamma Chia Pomegranate Mint. Very catchy name. I hope it lived up to it's billing! Have a wonderful weekend!

Umpqua on 06/29/2012:
It was such a pleasure to meet you yesterday and I enjoyed our beautiful walk! I've been very fortunate to have met a few members of this community now and absolutely agree that we have a unique and wonderful support network going here. I don't make it to Whole Foods very often but I'm due to make a trip there and to Trader Joe's. I also want to bring the boys to lunch at the market in Collinsville soon :)

grannyannie on 06/29/2012:
That's great that you and Umpqua got to meet! Yes, we do have a great network of friends on DD. I love Whole Foods as well and go when we visit my brother in Michigan. Prices are so steep though!

TheMother on 06/29/2012:
How nice to be able to meet up with a fellow DDer in person. After being on this site for a while (I've come and gone over the years), you do form a bond with certain bloggers and feel that you know them without actually having met. Glad that you were able to do that and had such a nice visit.

V on 06/29/2012:
I am so glad that you and Umpqua had a good time..Wish I had the privilege of meeting you in person as well <3 Have a good weekend!

POKER_PAID on 06/30/2012:
That is so great that the two of you were able to meet. I've been on DD on/off for at least 5 years and it's always been wonderful and supportive.

moogy on 07/01/2012:
So lovely to have you back:) I am sure umpqua is completely lovely:) I agree with you absolutely, we have a wonderful supportive group of virtual friends, I am sure if we could all get together we would have lots of tears and lots of laughter and lots of hugs:) I hope you have a great week:)

Still working on the few lbs gained in travel so no loss shown here. This morning went to LA Fitness for strength training class w/ abs. It was the same instructor that I had for the last class that I took there before I left 2 years ago so that was nice. The insructor has a good routine & not so much like the boot camp type person as the regular instructor ( today's instructor was a substitute). It was kind of funny because I knew how she runs a class & when to take out the mat, etc. & I could tell that others were just used to the regular instructoe who doesn't use a mat. Then went on the elliptical for 20 min. So I felt good after exercise.

Yesterday I had 2 of my grandchildren for most of the day . I gave them the option of going to an amusement park but that was voted down so we played a quick game of mini golf ( it was hot) and then spent the rest of the day in the pool.  They are fun and I don't have to amuse them- they keep me amused with their made up games.

Doing okay with eating but had a few items yesterday with the kids that I cold have done without. And yesterday besides the mini golf :) had no exercise.

I'm working on it, my friends, but could be doing better.

So far today

B- fiber cereal w/ blueberries, L- turkey & tom on thin sandwich,Snacks, peach & mini dove ice bar ,cracker w/ pb.ar , D- planning on chicken breast & green beans .I have fruit to snack on also.

Progress as of today: 17 lbs lost so far, only 14 lbs to go!

I love mini golf, I haven't played it since I was a teenager:) Fun with the grandchildren is much better for your health that workouts, it's my philosophy because it makes me feel good and I am their favourite grandparent!!:)

I'm glad you're getting into the exercise groove here while having some fun with the grandchildren. Looking forward to meeting you this week!

On a good track- just two days- but that's ok. Had a great Zumba class today. It was a new instructor from the last time I took the class so new music and new routines but I caught on to most of them & just faked it for the rest. A little hard on my knees but I can adjust how high I step. Fun, I love Zumba! Then this afternoon 2 hours of sweaty yardwork. I'm making some progress in the yard. Hope to get some flowers for windowboxes and other containers.

Yesterday & today were good eating days. If I can get a good week of exercise and healthy eating I hope to see some results on the scale.Still logging calories on my calorie app.

It's actually a bit chilly here today but supposed to be in the upper 90's tomorrow!

Hope everyone is having a good start to your week.

I had a good day. It certainly is easier to monitor my food when I'm on my own and started with nothing in the refrigerator & not much in the pantry.

Also signed up for LA Fitness where I used to belong. So I'm very excited about Zumba class tomorrow!

The homeowner saga continues- came home from running some errands & heard  dripping in the dining room & saw that the ceiling was stained from water leak. But was able to get a plumber out who first had to open up the ceiling & then fix the pipe. Just a pipe that had a pinhole leak & it was fortunate that I found it before the whole ceiling was saturated and the dining room floor was damaged.  These things happen..

So had a good eating day- below 1400 calories and went for a long walk early this morning. Bought some local strawberries- delicious.

Hoping for a quiet day here tomorrow now that the tree work is done and I have the pool under control and hopefully no plumbing emergencies!

Umpqua on 06/19/2012:
I just emailed you about possibly getting together next week, but we can postpone til mid July (when I return from vacation) if that would be better. I'm glad you caught that leak before serious damage was caused. I hope you have a great Zumba class!

Hi !

I'm back in the US. Had a really nice visit with my brotheer & sisterinlaw in Hawaii. They drove me all over & had dinner with some of their friends. Such perfect weather & you're never far from the water and a beach. people are nice and pretty laid back. So 4 full days there & then a 8 hour trip to Chicago & a 2+ hour trip home. Of course it all started with 14 hours to get to Hawaii! I just put myself in another zone & sleep, watch a movie, read & of course eat !

Now back home for the summer. Right now there are 3 guys here doing tree work & they're on the third day of trimming, removing , chipping trees, most of which were damaged in the Oct storm. So much for living in a forest. This was all supposed to be done before we returned home. Then this morning I had the pool opened. Two guys came, pulled off the cover, turned on the pump, put shock in the pool- all took about 15 minutes and probably will charge me around $300. Even though there was debris in the pool because they didn't put enough water bags around it. Off they went. So pretty much most of the day I've been working on the pool, trying to scoop out the dirt and leaves and then vacuuming it. Just saying this in case anyone thinks owning a pool is fun.

I know that once I get things organized and all of this work is done I will be fine. At least I don't have to worry about having a new roof done or a stonework project coming! That was last summer.

I did have dinner with my 12 year old granddaughter last night. Pure bliss just listening to her. Such a sweet heart and just a good person. And saw my grandson who was busy but I caught up with him later. And of course hugs for my daughter & soninlaw- a long 5 months since I last say them.

Now that I'm home I can concentrate on my food & exercise. I think this first week will mostly be doing yardwork but then I'll be walking, biking & maybe getting in a zumba class.

I got the results of my bloodwork- doesn't appear to be  a thyroid problem but I probably will need to start taking something for my cholesterol that has been creeping up over the years. So I'll see my Dr. here & see what he has to say.

I'll have some time now to catch up with everybody's posts. Hope all is well with my DD friends!

Welcome back! Hey, regaring your cholestrol -- my mother in law avoided having to take it by eating a bowl of oatmeal every other day-seriously. If you need to take it you need to take it, but might be worth a shot to try it.

moogy on 06/17/2012:
Glad you are home safe and sound. I remember when the children were pre-teens we had a pool at one of our married quarters (husband was in the Air Force) and I would spend most afternoons just floating around on the lilo with the vaccum lazily sucking up leaves, when life was but a dream!!! (get it get it Row Row Row your boat!! lol)

Last post until next week when I get home & back online.

Decided to get some blood  work done this morning since I haven't felt any better after the B vitamin shot, so we'll see if the blood work shows anything but won't know for a few days.

So today deciding what to pack to bring home. So far I have one medium sized suitcase & one small suitcase + one small wheeled suitcase to bring onboard- have to figure out how I'm going to manage getting these to the airport- oh well there are always people to help.

I'm looking forward t seeing my brother in Honolulu and then getting home. Of course the person watching the house mentioned that there is no hot water in the house and that there is debris in the pool.... Life here is so simple & I know that there will be alot facing me when I get back but I have to remember that I can do  a few things each day.

Will be posting from the US next week!.

Have a great time in Hawaii, what a great place to be! Where is your home in the US?

Funny story about the after-procedure shopping. I don't remember anything until I got home, they basically kick us out within the hour after the procedure, so I imagine if I bought anything I would not even know where to return it, ha!

I tried and tried to talk to my regular doc about HRT - it all fell on deaf ears-they clearly weren't that interested. To appease me they prescribed creams and such - estrogen only by the way - and none of it did any good. After a friend (male) tried this doctor's office that I have been going to (I see a Physician's Assistant, female who is around 50 year old and takes the HRT HERSELF)I decided to give it a shot. So far it has been very good. I can tell that the hormone levels rise and fall abit over the 3 month period, but not drastic highs and lows and none of the old symptoms have come back to any extreme extent. The bottom line, I think, is two fold when one is in pursuit of HRT -# 1 - gyns are not taught to treat - except after hysterectomy (which I have not had) and then only with a patch - most everyone gets the same doseage and it isn't balanced with progesterone or testosterone and # 2 all HRT clinics are not created equal/and everyone's body does not respond the same to the HRT. I have heard some scary stories but don't know if it's the doc or the patient, to be fair....my experience has been good. Thanks for asking.

Thanks for the responses. I can't say that I feel any results from the B vitamin shot, since I've been fighting sleep all day. maybe this is just a sleep issue. This morning I thought maybe it's a blood sugar issue so I had an apple around 11. I think eating the apple helped take my mind off of the feeling of being tired. Also had some dark chocolate this afternoon. It was good but didn't perk me up.

Anyway don't want to sound like whining... Had a good day. Started with a good walk, jog( mostly walking) & ended up in the hawker market- the local stalls which I find fascinating.Had lime juice instead of sugarcane juice- somewhat better. Many people do not cook & just eat at the hawker market and I can see why with prices as low as 3-4 dollars for a meal that will fill you up- it may not be the best food for you however. I took some pictures of the local scene to put together for my mother when I see her in July. Then sat around the pool & read & followed by a swim. This afternoon went to the busy area of malls- Orchard Rd. to find a tablecloth & a gift to bring back to one of my grandchildren.

Going to do something with sea bass for dinner- maybe just something simple, pan seared & roasted.

Wed & Thursday & then Fiday  I get on a plane at 7 am! So excited....!

The five days of eating meals out was not helpful to my hope of making a change in the scale.   It seems that when I eat anything like cake or other starchy dessert plus a couple of glasses of wine I'll see the scale jump up by a couple of lbs.and then have to work to get it back .

Anyway, this week should be mre normal but then I leave early Friday so I'm not going to try to make any big changes just try to keep calories at 1400 and keep up te exercise.

Today I decided to visit the Dr. about my feeling so tired. He gave me a B vitamin shot. Anyone have experience with that  ? I figured that it couldn't hurt and worth a try.

Getting excited about going home for the summer. I'll  have to start thinking about packing but I only bring  home clothes that I don't need here. I will need a few clothes for my stop in HI.

Eating out is so tricky with the added salt and you never really know what they're putting in the food. I'm sure you can't wait to come back home, maybe it will be easier for you to get into a routine when you're back in the States? I hope you have a good one!

hollybelle on 06/04/2012:
Exercise a little every chance you get this week and I'll bet that will make the difference this week! On the tiredness, YES, I hear you! I sought hormone replacement therapy this past March and part of the initial routine was B12 shots. I had two. It did seem to make a difference, but I found them painful - in that I would have to lay on the couch for about 4 hours because of discomfort. The pain went away immediately after that period of time, though. Then as the other hormones I had replaced sort of "kicked in" I found I have more energy most days. I don't know your age, but at my age (57 1/2!) I was very tired until I had the hormone replacement. I also found it very difficult to get any doctor to listen to me. The HRT doctor was different and also concluded that I was a little low on thyroid hormone and now I take a thryoid supplement as well as other supplements and a B12 tablet every day. It has helped. I am so tired some nights that I just don't want to go for a bike ride, a walk or anything at all....BUT....I find that if I just get myself going and DO IT I am rewarded with renewed energy. It's almost like you have to spend energy (or in some cases just simply muster it up!!!) to get energy. It really does feed on itself, apparently. Also I find it helps not to be an "all or nothing" thinker - I tend to think well if I can't workout an hour what's the use at all, or if I can't ride 12 miles I won't ride at all - but if I give up that "stinkin' thinkin'" and just go see what I can do - even if it's a 10 minute walk I get the energy reward I'm looking for. Keep at it, TP - you can do it.

V on 06/04/2012:
B-12 is really good for revving up the energy a bit..I hope it gives you a boost of energy :) I bet you are excited to head out on Friday! Hawaii, I am so envious :) have a good day!

Friday here and spent most of the day at the museum helping to interview candidates for the next docent training group. I enjoy talking to to people and tried to make them feel comfortable for the interview.  Then lunch out and now headed out for dinner. Not as easy to find light meals here, but did have salads on the menu today.

Exercise was the walk back from the museum. I should find out the distance but maybe just about1/1/2- 2 miles.

Wed  dinner at a restaurant-did ok, tried to have mostly chicken & vegetables with a little rice, last night was an event with finger food- had 2 satays and a portion of a sandwich with crudite. So tonight is Indian again and I know one of the people eating with us is vegetarian so should not be a problem sharing food.  So doing okay- but did have one glass of wine last night. It's hard to track calories when I've been eating out but think I've stayed about 1400.

Will try to rea some posts after returning from dinner.
