Hi-

Ok , well yesterday I was really good & today just so-so. The cooking class was fun & we made a number of Chinese dishes & I have to say that they use alot of oil. I was pouring oil in the wok & the instructor said I'll say when you should stop pouring. Well I kept looking at her expecting her to say stop but I don't know exactly how much but alot more than I would use when cooking. In addition to sampling all of the dishes I had 1 1/2 servings of the dessert , Pulot Hiam, which consisted of black rice that was soaked & cooked with sugar and then you pour coconut cream & a palm sugar topping over it. It may not sound great but it was. Many calories in that.

So for dinner I had a salad. I did have a good walk today so hoping the scale won't be up tomorrow.

Otherwise I'm settling in & next week will start my activities to keep me busy each day.

Progress as of today: 13.5 lbs lost so far, only 17.5 lbs to go!

Umpqua on 09/06/2011:
That dessert sounds good to me. The class sounds like fun, enjoy!

biscottibody59 on 09/06/2011:
Me too--that dessert sounds scrumptious!

Hope you enjoy your time abroad--take care!

moogy on 09/06/2011:
I never use the amount of oil that they do and everything turns out well. Just have to heat the oil until it gets scary!!!! That way nothing sticks!! LOL I hope you have a good day tomorrow:)

 Hi all-

Happy Labor day to all in US. It's a regular work day here in Singapore. But everday here is a holiday for me! Living in a small apartment there are few chores to do besides some general cleaning & having dinner ready in the evening.

Today I went to the gym & spent about 1 hour total and used the elliptical, treadmill & bike .

Meals- Breakfast- sunflower toast w/small amount of butter- Lunch- pumpkin/apple soup with piece of bread- dinner - salmon with bread crumb/parmesan topping and green beans  & rice- snacks- banana, yogurt, lime juice. mini ice cream cone. - Around 1400

Tomorrow I'm going to a cooking class. I've wanted to do that since I moved here. Just to learn more about local ingredients, vegetables, etc.

Still fighting jet lag....time for bed.

A cooking class would be awesome!! I am super sleepy today too I only had a half day of travel so I can only imagine that it would take you a few days to feel 100%...Get some rest and you must promise to share a bit of cooking knowledge with us :) Have a good one!!

moogy on 09/05/2011:
Re: your comment on the heat. If you choose to live in a tropical climate I am afraid it comes with heat, but heat with rain or without!!! LOL. The cooking class sounds great, I would love that. Shopping in local markets would be much easier if you knew what the stuff was and what to do with it. I have that problem in China Town, I know quite a lot about Chinese cooking but some of the stuff is quite quizzical!!!! Have a great week thinkpositive:)

When my husband was in the RAAF, I always told him "Don't ask for a posting north of Brisbane", I was lucky we weren't sent any higher. I think your attitude is great!! I have this recipe for Doughnut French Bread and it is 'legal', just beat an egg and soak one piece of bread as usual, spray a frypan and cook the french toast. Meantime on a large plate put a couple of tablespoons of caster sugar (superfine) and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, mix together well and when the toast is cooked dredge the toast in the mix. Tastes just like a doughnut, especially if you serve with blended fresh strawberries. Yum! About 230 cals and worth every one of them:)

FitAmbitions on 09/06/2011:
hey ty for the comment! Lumpia is a phillipino spring roll/egg roll style item. It's wrapped similar t a spring roll with cabbage and other chopped veggies and some chopped meat (pork perhaps?) then deep fried (I know so bad) They are quite yummy though and smaller than an eggroll. I had 2 and felt most satisfied.

Hi from Singapore-

All of my flights went well & I arrived safely here at midnight on Friday. The jet lag hasn't set in yet but I can assure you that it will. Last time it took me a full week before I felt really human.

I started to figure out the calorie count of my food & drinks but gave up on it when I couldn't remember what day I ate what. . But I can say that i did consume too much wine & a few too many munchies but it gets really boring with all of the waiting  & sitting. So I'll give the scale a few days before I record my weight.

I don't like these big transitions & my poor husband had to listen to how I really feel about being here. I know that I'll settle in & I'm invovlved in a lot of activities here to keep me busy.  A friend invited me to brunch tomorrow so it will be nice to make contact with someone here who has visited me back home in the US.

Hope to find some time to respond to postings- maybe after my nap....

Hi -

Just a quick update before I pack up my computer & leave  for my home in Singapore. Although down 1/2 lb on the scale today I'll wait until I return to see how friiendly my scale is when I return . I'll try to resist the airport foods & drinks & desserts on the plane.

I had a good day with my grandchildren. We had great gelato at Whole Foods, played mini golf & had good quality time together. I told them that I was not big on long good byes & they said - won't we get a hug? There were lots of hugs all around.

Talk to you next from the other side of the world!- Coming closer to your time zone Moogy!!

I hope you have a great trip and yes we may even have time to chat in real time. I manage to do it with Kathy and even V (mainly because she stays up late), at least you will be in the southern hermisphere and in this neck of the woods we will be practically neighbours. Asia is to Australia as Mexico is to the US, food, migrants. Hugs all round indeed, I think I would shrivel and die if I had to leave my live in grandchildren. Thank goodness for Skype and all the new technology!!! if only I knew how to use it!!!! LOL

* Updated with 1/2 lb loss- it all counts, right!

Hi all-

Today was a day of getting organized for my departure to Singapore early Thurs. I ran some errands made phone calls & trying to remember everything  of importance to shut down the house until we return for the holidays. Exercise was general running around & I think I'm still exhausted from the hurricane clean up.

Tomorrow will be packing & trying to spend some time with my grandchildren & daughter. It's hard on us to be apart for so long & I hate the good-byes.Maybe another mini golf game & an ice cream. See, it's always about the food!

I'm disappointed in myself that I didn't lose a few more lbs in August. I'll have to get back into a good routine in Singapore. I look forward to lots of mangoes & prawn.

As a retired educator September has always been a month of new beginnings- a new school year, new goals for the school year- a general feeling of anticipation mixed with some  anxiety. Although I'm no longer working in education I still hold that feeling. I hope for everyone with school age children that the school year has a wonderful and fulfilling beginning. And if you are a student- like Em- that your school year is fabulous!

Progress as of today: 13.5 lbs lost so far, only 17.5 lbs to go!

KayBee on 08/31/2011:
ahhhhh now I'm drooling - mangoes & prawn... I'd join in for those :)

I know what you mean about September, I always get that exciting and anxious feeling too as autumn begins. I'll get to relive it when my older son starts kindergarten next year. Enjoy your time with your family, and I wish you a very safe trip back if I don't catch you before then!

Hi all-

I finally got power tonight after Hurricane Irene. I had a generator but was getting a bit tired of keeping it going. Our house & property just had high winds & lots of downed limbs & branches so no complaints. Many people have water in their basements & worse. I am exhausted though from the clean up & getting the pool clean.

Didn't really pay a great deal of attention to counting calories but will start again tomorrow.

Hope to get a chance to read diaries tomorrow.

Good night.

Progress as of today: 13 lbs lost so far, only 18 lbs to go!

Umpqua on 08/30/2011:
We were SO darn lucky not to lose power. Most of my family lost it and we almost always lose it if there's a storm. We have some downed trees and branches as well, nothing major. Fall cleanup will be extra challenging this year! Have a good one!

sweetpea1977 on 08/30/2011:
Im glad you guys are ok!!

hollybelle on 08/30/2011:
Didn't realize you were in the hurriane "zone". Glad it wasn't worse for you!

moogy on 08/30/2011:
No wonder calorie counting was not high on the agenda. I am so happy that you got off with only downed limbs of trees. You will be able to breath again now!!

V on 08/30/2011:
Good to hear that you fared better than most.I am just happy to hear all is well with you all :) As far as the casting call assignment, it really isn't mandatory, but I figure to put my face in their heads right before they select(Sept6 ish??)..It is just me discussing the workouts, how great I feel and the sense of accomplishment that I have after each one, my favorite class...and so on...LOL Sorry I went on a bit there... Thank you for asking, I never really get the chance to talk about this with too many people...Most think i am a bit nuts(perhaps..LOl ) But i really am happy that I found a workout that I enjoy doing everyday...Regardless of the outcome, I am just thrilled to even be considered!!! Okay enough V...hahaha...have a good one my friend!!

Hi all -

I'm running around this morning like many here on the east coast. preparing for the hurricane. This morning I bought gas for the generator, lowered the water in the pool, bought some drinking water in case the generator doesn't work. It sounds like a big storm & I hope it's not but need to be prepared.I figured out how to operate the generator, dragged it out of the garage , put some gas in it & managed to get it going. :)

I've had a good week calorie wise but not seeing any results on the scale. And not going to reach my goal before I leave for Singapore but not feeling totally upset about that. Exercise has been so-so but I have managed to get some walking in almost every day. Today is mostly house cleaning but I may play golf later today if my friend gets out of work early .

Oh I did want to say that a couple of days ago I went shopping for a dress &found that  trying on  a dress  surrounded by mirrors to be  very humbling.  :( I did find one though :)

Ok back to my least favorite part of housework- vacuuming.

Progress as of today: 13 lbs lost so far, only 18 lbs to go!

liza36 on 08/26/2011:
It's good you're prepping for the hurricane. I'm in the DC area, and we are expecting tons of rain and heavy winds starting tomorrow, but nothing compared to NC up through NJ. Stay safe, and hope all is well.

I'm glad you found a dress, but I can totally relate to the experience of shopping. Not always so fun.

Happy vacuuming. I'll trade your vacuuming for my ironing - one of my least favorite chores.

Have a safe weekend!

V on 08/26/2011:
Please keep us posted!!! Be safe my friend :)

Umpqua on 08/26/2011:
I just got back from the store myself, they were almost out of eggs already! We're going to bring in the patio furniture and grill and fill the tubs tomorrow morning (we're on well water here and don't have a generator). I really hope we don't get hit hard but it looks like we may. Stay safe and best wishes!

KayBee on 08/27/2011:

V on 08/27/2011:

moogy on 08/28/2011:
I was thinking that your preparing for an hurracane is like when we lived in the moutains and preparing every summer for bushfire. Photo's and special stuff downstairs in the garage ready to be loaded in the car, clean out the gutters, get the hoses attached and ready to go. So glad that I live in a suburb now and fortunate not to be subject to natures whims. Hold on tight and good luck thinkpositie, sounds like you are well prepared:)

Hi all DD friends-

OK i think I am in a better place. Today I stuck with healthy eating and went on a hike with grandchildren. I think I'm back on track. ( I won't mention last night with the cheesecake 'cause that was yesterday)

Although it was a great day with the grandchildren it started out on a negative note with the contractor from hell who is so disrespectful to me. I can't wait for this project to be finished & to see the last of him. Part of me wants to tell him to get off of my property but then I realize that I don't want to deal with finding another contractor to finish this work. I was upset all day because of this stupid guy.

So now I need to change my ticket to return to Singapore because of the unfinished project and also with the possible hurricane approaching on Sunday. it will give me more time to get things done around here.

Progress as of today: 13 lbs lost so far, only 18 lbs to go!

That really sucks..there is a site where you can voice your grievances so the next unsuspecting person will know(that is once he completes the job) It is called "Angie's List" If ever in doubt you can always peruse this site,it is filled with so called "professionals" that made a few consumer's lives a living hell... I hope you guys well with the storm...By chance did you feel the earthquake today???

Umpqua on 08/24/2011:
I'm sorry to hear that about your contractor. It's so tough to gauge how someone will behave on the job, then once they've started you're pretty much stuck with them. I hope he will finish up soon so you can got on with your life. Hang in there!

V on 08/24/2011:
I didn't figure in that retaliation factor, especially when you all are in Singapore...I just hope he finishes soon... I am happy to hear that all was well from the quake

liza36 on 08/25/2011:
Dealing with contractors is always a frustrating process. I hope for your sake the project is finished quickly.

It's nice you got to spend time with your grandchildren doing something very active. No worries about the cheesecake. I'm saying that to myself about the ice cream I had for the past 2 days!

Hi all-

Stuck here with this weight it seems. The last few days have been stressful as my husband was getting ready to return to Singapore. Decisions to be made, many good byes until December. So bottom line is that I seem to have taken on the job of finishing various bags of chips. :(

So  a few days of not writing down my food & calories but back on track today. This morning I enjoyed a 10 mile bike ride on the local flat bike trail. Just a beautiful day here- breezy, sunny, light clouds.

It's noon & I just finished a light breakfast of a vitamuffin & coffee. I'll have a salad for lunch when I'm hungry  & then going out to eat tonight with friends. It's Cheesecake Factory again so I know they have their menu online so I can plan ahead.

I'll try to get out for a walk this afternoon.

Hope you are all having a wonderful Monday!

Hi-

Well I guess my daughter didn't get the memo about me counting calories and she brought back a few pieces of fudge from her vacation in Cape Cod. Well I passed the box around hoping others would eat it & finish it  but there is was- 2 pieces in the box calling to me until I ate it.I was feeling weak and I can also say that I felt a little sick after eating it.( So much for saying I was going to cut back on calories!)

Another day & more challenges but feeling strong today.

Grandchildren ended up making cupcakes as I heard that it was National Cupcake Day. They had fun with that project.

Speaking of projects - I had words with the contractor who is doing the stone work around my pool. I actually hung up on him & he called back several times. I just finished meeting with him &I think things are resolved, we'll see. I dont like it when contractors tell me one thing & then so something else. I am not one to just let it go either & will let them know when I'm upset.

Will catch up on entries later- now going to have lunch with the grandchildren & my daughter.

Have a lovely day!

Yeah, to be faced with two pieces of fudge is a delima but it could have been worse. You did goo passing the box around. I hope you weren't so worried about the cals, etc. that you didn't ENJOY them.

greengirl on 08/20/2011:
It must be a daughter thing!! When my girl went away with friends for a few days she brought me fudge back too!! I ate a couple of pieces and let hubby finish the rest of them off !
