Taking no chances on my post being deleted and composing it in a text box on my pc before I post on here :)

Been an interesting few days.  Clinic yesterday morning and then the afternoon off to go to Art Therapy, which was ...not what I had expected, because the Art Therapist is on holiday but the people who run the centre didn't cancel the class, they just made people cups of tea and sat them down in front of paper and pencils...and let them get on with it.  A few nice chats with other people who were there but otherwise... I just drew some flowers, began to wonder why I was there and then developed a headache (genuinely) that required me to escape and take some paracetamol (paracetamol, as I've mentioned before on here, is the same thing as acetaminophen).  If any of you has anxiety-reducing tips (other than exercising, which is already helping quite a lot) that don't involve taking any drugs, I'd love to hear them.

Good news towards the end of yesterday, our team hit its target for the number of people who we've helped to quit smoking.  We had to get 1,477 people off the cigarettes during the year and we currently have 1,481.  I know it's not about the money, it's about helping people, but this does mean each of us gets a cash bonus.  We're going to go out to celebrate in a few weeks' time.

Today I spent starting to get things ready for training new advisors next week including a visit to the office to pick up materials to assemble into advisor packs.  I'll take some photos to show you all of the training if you'd find it interesting.

Continuing with the exercising and my weight has stopped going up and has started gradually going down so I'm just going to keep going. :)

Anxiety reducers: 1) Bedtime meditation is actually reducing my anxiety. I don't really meditate, I just fill it out. I love your bedtime thoughts. I have a thing I sometimes do, using the alphabet, where I'll imagine a load of things that begin with A, then B etc. according to a pattern. Last night I was trying to fill imaginary rooms with lovely things for each letter (my friend Ani, with an Apple pie for if she's hungry, and surrounded by lots of Art for her to look at etc.)... the idea is that the game ends in multiple z's (i.e. zzzzzz sleep) before it gets to the actual z.

The exercise is definitely helping a lot.

WISH we could get a dog but both out of the house for a lot of the day working (plus we live on the third floor).

Tracking and grounding?

I have heard the most relaxing song ever thing. It is very soothing. I need to sort some way to play music through headphones :)

Also if I am puffing on asthma meds I get more anxiety spirals even in the weeks that follow. This tea is good for puffing on the inhaler less, and also helps when I'm anxious because sometimes I don't realize I can't breathe and feel it as anxiety... so I've started just drinking it at second breakfast. Yep asthma meds fire up some receptors for adrenaline. Asthma/anxiety is an annoying combo. Is the tea fennel tea? I've had that before and love the taste of it.

My mother spent quite a few years working for her county's smoking cessasion program - it's really quite self-rewarding -- but a cash bonus is always nice to have, too!

I don't have any secrets for dealing with anxiety. I think I've always just lived through it. Or ate through it. Or popped a pill. I think you did best by leaving the situation. Deep breaths...

it's always good when you are on the successful team at work :) good for you and on the bonus.

with anxiety, you have to "bring yourself back to reality" like concentrate on how something feels that you touch, or concentrate on something you are looking at...take your mind off the anxiety by working on concentrating on something else.

We have quorn. Tons healthier than soy, but expensive. Pea protein and garbanzo products tend to be more common.

Have been avoiding posting because my weight went up. 

I've been exercising about 30-40 minutes per day for the past couple of weeks and focusing less on the healthy eating so (I'm hoping) some of it is increased muscle weight.  But then there was also the Easter chocolate frenzy/nausea and slipping back into grabbing quick food rather than planned meals with plenty of protein and good veg.  I am confused though because even though the scales show a higher weight, people keep asking me if I've lost weight.

I might try to get back into the photographing etc.  It does take a few minutes to remember to do it and then to upload the photos but I did seem to be doing better a month ago than I am now. 

The lovely husband has started using the same exercise software, it feels nice to be doing something fun that we're both doing.

Another challenge, and one which I haven't talked about (much) here is my anxiety, especially at nighttimes trying to get to sleep.  Using things like sleeping pills or tranquilisers feels like it's avoiding the problem or could be making it worse so I'm going to try to educate myself about ways to get my anxious self to sleep.  I'm not consciously anxious *about* anything,  I think I just get into an anxious breathing pattern at nights, possibly going back to a violently abusive relationship I had in my late teens where I didn't have enough life experience or confidence to escape right away... that's just a guess though, I don't think I have a great bedtime pattern.

On happier note, I just got back from an expedition to the budget food shop with a LOT of veg so I'm going to make something super healthy.

I just had a text conversation with one of my nephews, who is into weight training, and his opinion is that my body is holding onto water to repair muscle. He has suggested keeping my calories below 1600 (they're already below 1500) and eating more protein and more fat while reducing carbohydrates.

I don't eat meat very often so maybe I should look into doing that. Or fish, which IMHO tastes nicer.

An apology for absence, also for this being a long post... and some good news

Work got very hectic as I've been training new stop smoking advisors in Kingston, which has a lot of admin and organisation around it, more than I'd usually need to do as it's somewhere I only deliver twice a year, and my clinics have also been very busy.  Healthy eating, exercising, and looking after myself, took a back seat in favour of doing a lot of work.  Last training day is this Wednesday and, since the venue we're using has a fridge, I don't really have an excuse not to eat healthily as I can bring food from home and put it in the fridge (while all the slim healthcare professionals who I'm training get cookies, catering-company food and other nice things... but then they also have to do their exam at the end of the day so it's only right that I feed them and be nice to them).  It's a 12-hour work day for me and, last week, I came home and just slept through till the morning.  This week, I'm more prepared.  I've taken the day off the day before *and* the day after.

Today I'm going to pick up some dumbbells that I bought (one of my friends informs me they are called 'dumbbells' because people used to use actual bells for weight-training, with the clappers removed, hence dumb-bells) and then I'll be having a look at my Xbox exercise game - 'Your Shape - Fitness Evolved', which I found an online video review of here

The good news?  Drumroll .............
I no longer have pre-diabetes.  I had been terrified of going back to the doctor to find out, even though they'd asked me to do so.  I was at another doctor surgery (not mine) working with one of the nurses who I trained some months ago as a stop smoking advisor.  She'd been having problems learning how to use our data monitoring tool and I spent some hours showing her, getting her a log in for the live database and helping input some of their outstanding paperwork.  We were chatting and I mentioned my fears about getting the HbA1c test done again.  She said "why don't we redo the test here and now?" and the penny dropped.  It's like if you told your friend you were scared of taking your toothache to the dentist and then you realised your friend is a dentist and you're actually sat talking to them in a dental surgery.  I let her take my blood.  The results came back.  In November it had been 44.  Now it was 41.  In the UK, prediabetes is measured as anything from 42 to 47.  I have stepped just outside of the box.  (For clarity, although I only mentioned the pre-diabetes here at the start of the month, I was given the diagnosis in November 2017... it's over the past 3 months I must have reversed it)

What's next is getting back on track.  Photographing my food.  Using MFP.  My weight has not changed that much so it must be the healthy eating and walking to all of my clinics that has got my blood sugar down.  Onwards and upwards.

How wonderful that you are no longer pre diabetic!!! I have many family members with diabetes...Hubby included....and it's no picnic for them for sure. It sounds like you have it all together....with great plans too.

Hopefully can keep this going. I just did my first workout using the Xbox exercise game and, even though I did the 'Nice and Easy' workout, I feel exhausted. Yup, diabetes is a difficult thing to have to manage. Sorry to hear that, like me, you have lots of family members with it. An HbA1c of 41 is a start but I hope to be able to get it lower. I'm going to book ahead for another blood test in 3 months :)

I feel like I could have written the paragraph about how work takes over your life, leaving your health in a distant second place. Last year, I tried not to let that happen. Check with me in July and see if I'm able to do better this year.

That's wonderful to have your health more in line. That's really important and it's glad you worked to get rid of your pre-diabetes label! How wonderful. Keep up the good work and it's great you can bring your own food. At work I've noticed that there are plenty of people who bring their own food and they usually look fit / not fat. Planning a healthy meal is always easier when bringing it - rather than ordering too much at a takeout place.

I used to always bring my food but bc i am in manhattan, the food has been really tempting. However, i also DO BRING at least my breakfast. it's good to have a plan and stick to it. or at least plan for healthy eating and not leave it up to a moment's notice or leave it up to whatever is around / not around for you to choose from....cookies and sweets certainly have a lot of calories. lately i have more of them bc i'm in more of a maintenance phase and i guess i've been tempted, but i notice one thing for sure - they don't satisfy me and leave me just getting hungrier and hungrier after i have them!

keep up the good work at work...! and looking forward to your future entries!

I am back!  And I am not going to get within 10 feet of the weighing scales until at least Wednesday.  I had a super lovely time with my family.  The only picture I took was of the dogs ...I think the flash gave one of the dogs laser eyes.  Every other picture would have had food in it!
We went to a lovely Chinese restaurant called Cathay Rendevous where everyone chose one dish but then they were put on a Lazy Susan wheel so everyone could try everyone elses... and as we know, the more variety - the more we eat.  I had the opportunity to skip dessert because it was my mum's birthday cake (with dairy, which I am allergic to) but oh noooooo I asked to be dropped off at a Sainsburys so I could buy vegan ice cream and dairy-free chocolate brownies.  I'm not a religious person but I swear there was an almost tangible dessert demon on my shoulder telling me that everyone else would be having a lovely dessert and I shouldn't be left out.  Dessert Demon: 1 / Trish: Nil

I did walk one of the dogs to get some exercise.  The oldest dog can't go on the same long walks as the younger ones so I took him for a meander to the local park and back, which took a long time even though it's only around the corner but he loves to go and meet other dogs.

Back to work and I've been very, very careful today.  I walked to and from my clinic (about an hour and ten minutes walking in total).  I have a podiatry appointment in the morning and I'm going to walk there and back also.

They're lovely. Very different characters, all of them. The youngest (the one whose eyes are shining in the flash) LOVES to play fetch with a ball and wants to do so pretty much all the time. Oldest dog (in the middle) very loving and gentle. Other dog (large blonde in front) likes being picked up and cuddled, although this is no longer feasible due to his size... he likes to sit on people's laps, usually unasked :)

Hi everyone!

I'm surprised this hasn't happened earlier but my body has gotten hold of the fact that I'm eating more healthily and I'm no longer constipated.  I ruined making my dinner by having to drop everything and run to the bathroom, and when I came back I couldn't face continuing with what I was making, hence banana and toast.  I've recycled a photo of some of my chocolate and squash, which I intend to have later.  My apologies for being indelicate but just approximately how long does this last when you begin eating healthily?

I didn't get a haircut today but I did go underwear shopping in a really nice shop.  Tried on some bras in the fitting room and was about to leave, then realised it was the men's fitting room (I had wondered why it smelled of aftershave)... and that there were suddenly loads of men around (it had been empty when I wandered in).  I was rather embarrassed and stayed in there till it was quiet enough that I could sneak out.

One bit of good news. The coach company refunded the money I lost on tickets from a trip to Bristol that was cancelled due to the snow last week. :)

Sorry to hear you're quite often constipated. It's horrible. I had the opposite problem yesterday though :(

Today has been ...not the most fun day.  I had a thing to do for work, even though I'm on leave.  My choice to do it but doing it when I return from leave on Monday would've meant it was done too late... and I only got permission to do it yesterday.  I won't go into detail but my day was sat at the dining table at home working on work laptop and really begrudging working during holiday time ..... SO, whatever else happens, I am going to go out tomorrow and take myself somewhere nice.

I got perilously close to eating 1,500 calories today.  I think because I was feeling aggrieved... and was busy so put less effort into preparing healthy things.

Thank you! Being married to an American person, I am aware there are some food names which differ. Here are some more I'm aware of. - Courgettes are zucchini - Prawns are shrimp (we also have a separate thing called shrimp, which looks like smaller prawns so that's confusing) - Chips are fries. We have lots of Mickey D's here and they sell fries. Chips tend to be bigger and thicker - Crisps are potato chips... and are my downfall - Biscuits are cookies. Again, I think we have biscuits *and* cookies now, with some differences between them. A plain, dry biscuit for dunking in tea is a biscuit. Something round and very fatty and sugary, usually with chocolate involved somehow is a cookie - Aubergine is eggplant. However, in this part of London, Asian people just about outnumber European people... and they all call it eggplant. - Rocket is arugula. I like rocket!

Hubby and I are cool on which words to use but, after 7 years of marriage, we can't remember which is the correct pronunciation of things like "schedule" or "process". :)

I think my metabolism is so slow that I may even gain weight on 1,500 calories per day ;) but yes, it is really hard because the kitchen is right there and nobody is watching

Wherever I go out tomorrow, I'll post some pictures. That's an incentive to actually go!

Hello lovely people

I was going to call this Day 1 but I already began to lose weight after how I ate yesterday so I guess this can be Day 2.  My first day of annual leave and I've been into the office twice so I don't think I'm doing this being on holiday thing properly.

I had to take my expenses sheet into the office because the deadline is tomorrow (and I can't go tomorrow because I have to wait in for the plumber).  I did so... then I realised that the receipts were in my other bag.  Not clever.  I went to the charity shop to drop off a donation of some clothes (2 sizes too small; I'm keeping the ones that are one size too small because I hope I'll fit back into them one day).  Then I went to my husband's office and handed him some healthy lunch (chicken salad sandwich and some grapes).  Back home again to get the receipts.  Back to the office to staple the receipts to the expenses sheet.  Then a bit of food shopping... I forgot the roll of baking paper so I walked to another shop to get that.  My fitbit thing isn't working at the moment but I am sure that was lots of walking.

Shop assistant "Would you like a bag?" (my other bag was full)
Me: "No, I'm going to carry it down the street like a sword"
Shop assistant: "Would you like a receipt?"
Me: "Yes, I think I should have one, especially if I'm going to be carrying this down the street like a sword"

What I'm eating now is definitely more healthy than what I was eating last week.  I'm going to try to throw in some proper exercise tomorrow so please do wish me luck!

I'm putting links to photos of what I'm eating (with calorie counts next to them, courtesy of MyFitnessPal doing lots of sums for me).  I don't think I'm going to eat any more today but if I do then I'll add another photo.

Thank you! I am finding it to be useful to be able to check, visually, that I'm getting enough veg. I noticed I hadn't had much/any carbs hence the potatoes near the end of the day :)

The photos are on a blog is one I kept from 2011 until 2013, which was the last time I successfully lost weight. I've got lots of different sorts of posts on there and some reviews of books about healthy eating etc. My job is so busy now that I wouldn't have the time to create the same input so I'm just using it as a space to store photos for now.

you have a really interesting job. a friend of mine just quit smoking, again. he has copd and it all of a sudden got a lot worse bc i think he had a cold and it exacerbated the copd. he had a strained voice and still does bc of all the coughing. so sad how smoking hurts so many people. i hope my friend doesn't start again. he might even have cancer now - going to doctors. i really hope he isn't too sick and that something might be able to be done for him.

anyways, i thought of him when you mentioned your job.

also, if you want to post calories, it is up to you - calories are the way i manage my weight. and usually a lot of veggies especially at lunch at work - along with other food but i usually make sure to eat veggies so i can be full and satisfied that i ate.

I'm so very sorry to hear your friend has COPD. Quite a few of our clients already have it. If it's caught early and the person stops smoking then it's much less of a problem so I'm joining in with you hoping he stays quit.

Smoking can be like being stuck in an abusive relationship with someone who, nevertheless, can make you feel amazing some of the time. There's a gradual loss of independence within that relationship... people can become scared of how they'll cope without it, even though being in it is damaging them. :( And though we know the best thing with abusive relationships, the best thing to do is get out and don't look back, the idea of 'I'll just have one' can remain seductive, along with the illusion that one is going to remain 'in control' this time and that the damage will be minimal if we just keep the contact low.

Success often comes down to recognising, engaging with, and enjoying 'real life' rewards. Difficult if one is already very physically compromised. I'm hoping your friend heals and that there's no cancer. All the love to you and my best wishes to him.
